Rough Mixes seeking feedback

Hi Everybody...

I'm new to the forum and writing music after a 20 year break (yikes it's been that long?)

Anyway... still coming up to speed with the technology and am seeking some feedback on a couple of rough mixes...
I haven't recorded vocals before or written songs around lyrics ever so some of this is uncharted territory for me.
The vocals are pretty rough and will be redone, but as far as comments anything you have to offer is great - levels, arrangement, structure... anything you have to offer is more than welcome!  This is for a project called The Love Control Matrix.  Here's a link

All words are by Eva el Beze from her poetry at

Thanks!

Very ecclectic and unpredictable.  Some of Adrien Belew's musical experiments come to mind.  I may not be able to hum the tune of these songs, but as I listened I got into the textures and motion of these pieces.  The mixes sound good at my end.  Nice job.

All the best,
Lynn

Welcome Arvid.

This is not a genre I frequent but the mixing sounds good to me. I know you asked for any kind of comments but I was wondering what specifically you think "might" be wrong or lacking?

Hi Arvid.  I too had a very long break and got back into it a few years ago now.  I don't know how to comment on this yet.  Are these song ideas only?  Is it finished or just started?

Thanks guys for your comments...
daryl - scary and intriguing yeah that's me in a nutshell
lynn - adrian belew wow that's a name i haven't heard in aeons. thanks!  will go back and check some of his stuff out.
lynn - i guess what i'm looking for is lemme give you an example...
in tears for rain i thing the solo bass drum is a bit cliched and i need to work on that.

does the phrasing in the vocals work?  are the levels/eq-ing ok?  overcompressed?  anything that comes to mind really.

they are pretty much finished in most respects (vocals are all going to be redone)

I never wrote a percussion track in my life until six months ago so drum use feedback is welcome -- do they need more variation?

most of my work 20 years ago was electronic/experimental after studying under Gordon Mumma and Peter Elsea at the UCSC EM program and composition/symphonic - i'll be posting a few of my recent ones on soundcloud as well.

Re-learning a lot and having nightmares about modular analog synths, patch cords and 30 foot long reel-to-reel tape loops. lol.

Nice work. I thought the androgynous vocals on Taxi were interesting. On both taxi and tears, I found the vocals a bit lost within the music. I bit more low cut on the vox in tears might allow you to bring the levels up and clear up the slight muddiness to them.

What an interesting collage of sounds.

Very well done!

Thanx Guitarpima! Love your quote.

foxwolfen - yeah the androgynous vox on taxi were where i wanted to go...

the poem is from the point of view of nancy spungen of sid & nancy.  what i was shooting for was a post-punk no-wave grindhouse kinda feel (i thought that would be a bit ironic) .  the vox - instead of using a female to record them - were run through v-vocal with pitch and formant alterations.  my thought process behind that is the destruction of sexuality by heroin addiction.  it becomes your lover and makes you in a sense androgynous because gender ambiguity is such a common theme among addicts.

anyway love the comments so far... keep 'em coming!

Added a new set with the tunes I wrote to cut my teeth with the software.  Warning some on the thirtieth listen just suck... lol.  A variety of styles and synths.  learning my instrument (x1 and plugins if you will).  the tracks are ordered from my fave to least fave.  take a listen if you have some time.

good fun!

Great job on these tunes.  They sound good to me production wise.  The vox on taxi cracked me up... lol.
