Run Along Romeo

I have been trying to learn about salvaging a bunch of cassette tapes.  I never thought it was possible.  Recently, with the help of some brilliant folks in the Techniques forum i've got up some courage to try and clean up a few tracks.
Here is my wife singing a song I wrote about how cool it is to say 'no' instead of caving in to the pressure.
I actually am playing a real bass guitar, acoustic guitar and a grand piano (I dragged my tape deck and mic to the  local music school).
The really interesting thing (for me) is how little i did to this other than some eq and noise removal.
No compression anywhere....the vocal and bass sound compressed (perfectly) to me and they aren't...Tape is amazing.
It's really a family gem as i tease my wife how she sounds like she's 15 years old.

I hope you like.

    Rick

    Maybe 16, not 15!

I have a few old cassettes of my piano playing days back in the warehouse. I'd love to take them and try to clean them up but they were recorded on a $10 machine so I think they will never sound much better.

    Nice clean-up.

Yeah it's cool cleaned up and all.

I think the real interest is how you went about laying this track down back in '95.  I mean it's so easy to cherry pick from a pile of takes and multi-track long after cassette tape would have been reduced to a blurry hiss these days.

But bouncing stuff around on a 4-track and have it sound as good as this even now is is an amazing thing..

    Ron,
You might be surprised.  It's not just cleaning them up, although that's most of it, but using the tools in sonar to polish and trim.  Give it a go.
    Thanks for the listen.

    Mark,
Yes, this was like finding an old photograph and having it come alive.
Thank you for the listen and kind comments.

    Jon,
Funny all the limitations we had and how they were really just containers for focus and force.  When i think of how primitive every step was and how much labor to do what now is a keyboard click....Still not sure digital is really better...although it sure pumps up my imaginary achievements.
Thank you for lending an ear here.

Actually, I might do better with a cassette recorder.  They have way less buttons!  lol

Anyway, this is cool.  Great song as usual, (and vocals too!) and the mix sounds great.  Fun piano playing that's just perfect for this song!

    Hi Rick,

What a fun song!  Your wife sounds great.

Not sure what you had to do to 'clean' this up but the mix sounds fine here.

Does your wife sing on any of your other songs!

    Very cool...

Classic !!! This is really great. Really enjoyed listening to it. Lyrics are perfect!  I had a Fostex X-15 which I recorded a bunch of stuff on. I still got it but I've had to fix it too many times.

Really crafty phrasing. This one's a gem in the making.
It did a surprising twist in style from girlie song to broadway.
You're not finished with it, are you? You're going to add a girlie back-up choir, aren't you?

I listen to songs like this one performed by guys (and gals) with such talent, and I wonder why aren't more of ya'll famous?  Do ya'll not market yourselves?

With more development, this one could be on Broadway.

Janet..................and the other thing was with tape there were some legit excuses for things whereas now there's none.  I'm always elated when you enjoy my piano parts.  Thank you for the listen!

Karalie.........It was fun soaking this memory into my brain for a few days.  There's a few more i'd like to try but doubt they will be so seamless.  I appreciate your listen and comments....and really love your latest.

Hi Frank.................I wish they were all this easy to mix!  Thank you!

Warren................."gents sound"?   Hahaha....maybe that's where i got it!  Thank you, sir , for coming by to listen!

Gary....................I ran some noise removal in Audacity and ---that's it!  Yes, she sings: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=826274&songID=7924517
and starts in around the 2:00 mark on:

    and she sings alto on:

Thank you for the listen and comments!

TAP.............i remember that fostex.   That was immensly popular then.  I had a Vestax (never heard of it before) and a little alesis verb ...i loved it.  Some (songs) are easier then others to restore.  Thanks for coming by!

Hi PeggySue...............It does have a showtune feel doesn't it.
I never thought of the girlie choir....good idea.   Maybe her little clones can do that when they're at that age.
Thanks for stopping by to listen and leave me these kind comments.

Just excellent Rick! Your wife sounds good on this. I think it has that play/theatre vibe to it..almost reminds me of something that would be in 'Grease'! The lyrics are really catchy. Mix is very good with a 'warm' sound thru-out.

Another stellar job Rick.  You did a great job of clean-up, it sounds terrific.  Isn't amazing what studio engineers/producers had to work with before DAW's --- heck, before 4 tracks.  Your playing is great and your wife also sounds great.
    Kudos.
