Running on a treadmill and ear buds...

Have any of you ever run or walked on a treadmill and used ear buds plugged INTO the treadmill for listening to a built in TV or something?  our treadmills at the gym at the place where I work have built in TV's hooked up to a satellite.  there's a 1/8" headphone jack to plug into.

well.......if you're on a treadmill and you're plugged into the treadmill and have an air gap between the metal on the ear buds and your ears....guess what happens when you start that treadmill going????

ZAAAAAPPP!!!   ZAAAAAAPPPP!!! (both ears!)  over and over!  unless I hold onto the metal plates for measuring your heart rate then I get zapped while walking on the treadmill!

I've got to try to find some plastic coated headphones or something - or something with more gap between the speaker and my tender ear skin!

    No pain, no gain!

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Maybe you can hook a ground wire between you and the treadmill.

yeah, that's a possibility, but there's very little metal anywhere on the treadmill except for those plates for heartrate monitor and there's not really much of an area on those to clip onto.

You might try running shoes that have anti-static soles....I used to get driven mad by these forms of static discharges. Another way might be to spray the top of the belt with a mix of 1/2 oz. of fabric softener with about a quart of water in a spray bottle. Once sprayed then wipe with a towel to spread it out a little...problem finito.

    Ear Buds?

Why not just bring your studio monitors and set them up.

    Simples.

I found that one has to make changes in life.  One can either rail vainly against Reality itself, or adapt.  It may be a disturbing thought, but one must occasionally make difficult decisions in order to thrive.

Therefore, I recommend that when you use the treadmill, you first change out of the tin foil undershreddies.

I have special feet.    I have trouble finding shoes that fit, so I doubt I could find antistatic soled shoes that fit without spending money for custom made shoes.

but I do have - IN MY WORKOUT BAG - a can of static-guard spray!  I didn't even think about that!  I might try that!

Umm, Beagle.  If that "Anti-Static Spray" says Secret on the label, you might want to read a little closer.

I thought about joining a gym, one time for a short time. It would be about a 30 mile round
trip and I decided I was to lazy to drive that far.

It's actually a no-brainer for me.  they have a gym here at work and another larger facility a few miles away and I can go to either facility - both are actually convenient, but the one at work is very convenient.

but the no brainer part is that it costs $250 / year for the membership - and my employer reimburses each employee up to $250 / year for gym memberships to encourage good health.  so even if I don't use it but a few times a year there's no point in NOT getting it since it's basically "free."

    Wait.

Is Beagle gaining Super Powers?  Shouldn't we discuss something like that first?  Souldn't some of us have time to restock certain refrigerators before those decisions are made?

Is only one treadmill that does this?  If so, maybe you should report the problem to the management.  Maybe there's a grounding problem in the machine.
