S Gear and hardware pedals

I have used S Gear for years now as my amp sim of choice. A review of the Lunastone True Overdrive 1 pedal caught my eye in the latest edition of Sound on Sound. I like the idea of combining S Gear with the True Overdrive, in pursuit of "that sound" - the holy grail.

I do not even own a hardware amp anymore, and all I do is home studio work. Does combining hardware pedals and software amps and speaker emulations make any sense? TBH, I know S Gear produces amazing tones on its own, but, you know how it is...!

I tend to keep it in the box and since you can get great singing sustain I haven't used much fuzz or overdrive with s-gear. A week or two ago I was playing with TH3 pedals in front of s-gear - I don't remember if I was using the Duke or Wayfarer, but I was able to get a nice 'tubey' fuzz tone, like a '69 Fulltone. And of course more besides. S-gear handled fuzz/OD very well, as you'd expect. If you can put third party fuzz in front of it, I don't know why HW wouldn't work.

I've done it before and it works really well. I stopped because of all the work(I had to unplug chords), but it sound great. S-gear takes pedals really well, just don't clip your interface.

One thing that would be great if you would be the ability to put some hardware pedals in an fx loop of an amp sim

Just as an aside, I have subsequently done a fair amount of reading and with the help of a total guitar pedal geek friend of mine, have ordered the Rockett Archer instead of my original idea of the Lunastone. Look forward to trying this with S Gear, especially on the clean amps. Could be the start of a slippery slope...

I now have the Archer plugged into S Gear - I am very pleased with the results. I think the main benefit is on clean amps where it adds grit but no mud. Even with six string minor chords, you continue to hear everything very clearly. The interaction of the gain and output dials gives complete control. The treble dial is also very useful, and in most instances, sweeping this will lead you to the obvious sweet spot. I also love having a physical control on my desk, which is where it's placed, rather than the floor.

    Highly recommended!
