S8/W7 - X3/W8...
Sonar 8 on Windows 7 - Yay or Nay? Anyone tried even if not officially supported? Is W7 even available anymore? As a download if possible? Best place to buy online? What were you doing on the morning of the 27th? Did Han shot first? I'm unarchiving projects, it seems that I thought my relationship with Cakewalk would go on forever - I have quite a few .cwb... :s I guess I could buy X3, but since I'm only trying to retrieve some files... Sonar 9, for Mac and PC - rolls off the tongue nicely, doesn't it... sigh.

Krist, I can confirm that SONAR 8 (both 32 bit and 64 bit versions) works absolutely fine on my Windows 7 (64bit) PC.

Actually, just to add (and one reason I'm reticent about migrating to Windows 8) - all my older Cakewalk software runs flawlessly on Win 7 - even as far back as Guitar Tracks 2 which was released over 10 years ago, and Music Creator 24 (2004). Thinking about it, on my previous 32bit Vista machine, I had all my older products installed and running, but a few of them (GTPro3 and earlier) would only play nice if I ran them in Compatibility Mode (for Win XP). I don't need to run any of them in Compatibility Mode in Windows 7, which seems to be much more forgiving than Vista was on older software.

I think I am going to ask bapu to unarchive my .cwbs so he can pay off his X3 upgrade. Unless Steve will do it cheaper.

Rain, I am still using an older Q6600 PC. It was running under XP. When I upgraded to X2, Windows XP was no longer supported. I had to also upgrade my OS. I opted to move to Windows 8. Long story short, I still can't get the hang of X2 and find myself getting frustrated every time I try to use it. So, for now, my goto version of Sonar is 8.5.3 and it's working great under W8. I had serious issues (another post on the CH), with W8 and Microsoft Support as their W8 -32 bit version was horrendous, and was not even saving any network settings and not talking to each other (2 machines), and after 9 hours of telephone support, I got tired of the guys from India tinkering and a Linda something/nothing at Microsoft sending me emails that said nothing and did nothing about it! So I filed a complaint with the State Attorney General in the State of Washington. In the end, I got tired of the 32-bit bullpucky, and redid both machines with the 8-64bit. Have not had any issues with it so far ... and I asked my friend the code specialist, and he goes: "...never use 32bit, it's not even a consideration!"... STOP using 32bit stuff, because it is just cheap home computer crap? What I don't know is, if Sonar is good enough for the W8-64bit, and the sentiment in general appears to be a bit strange. But I ask myself this, do all the big name pros use 32bit? And the answer is NO!

Rain - just to add, I had completely forgotten this, but I have ver 8.5 and ver 8 installed on my win7x64 computer. I never use them, they're just installed in case I have an emergency with X2. so I do know they work on win7x64 as well.

Beagle ... so I do know they work on win7x64 as well. ...
That's the machine I am setting up with all the music stuff as well. It was Win-XP, but that machine was getting on in years, and the motherboard and its sound stuff was really not good enough for any music work. The Gigabyte motherboard on this W7-64 machine is much better, not to mention that ALL 64bit machines USE THE MEMORY, where as all other versions of Windows DON'T. That's an important consideration for you all ... what's the point of 8G in memory, if your 32bit Windows is only using 3.5G of it, and does not touch the rest?

My old Dell Inspiron 9600 with 2gb Ram just barely ran X1. Then I got my ADK Lappy: 6gb RAM, W7 Home Premium, with 3 internal hard drives (each 7200 RPM 750GB drives). Runs X3 of course.

I was talking with Scott about a nice box when our customer stiffed us for over $17k. Needless to say, I now still have to use my dual 1.3ghz server box with the nine very loud fans it comes with... *Sigh...*

Well, you could sample those fans and start a group buy. Start at $10 but let everyone know you'll part with them for a $1 if enough people get on board. ;-)

I am going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade my OS soon. I have been running X1 and X2 with Vista 64 with out any issues. Some of you guys may have seen this thread upstairs; I loaded X3 on my machine and it ran great, but can not access any of the new VST's that shipped with X3. I own Melodyne Essentials already, but have not being able to scan my version with the X3 VST Scanner, seems to block Melodyne from running in the ARA mode. I swapped out the VST Scanner from X2 to X3 and then it scanned my plugs. Both Seth and Noel were all over it, had me fill out a report and they would like to see if they can make it run from Vista. I thought that was a really stand up position for the guys to take when it is clearly stated that Vista is not supported. There is apparently some sort of hand shake that happens with the new VST Scanner the unlocks the new includes software and Tape Sim, along with opening up the ability for Melodyne to work as its supposed to with X3. I have a copy of W8 upgrade sitting on a shelf. I have been really reluctant to wipe my machine clean and do a clean install of W8. Not only because its a lot of work, but also because I really don't like the new way it interfaces. My son got a Toshiba lap top with W8 before running off to Texas Tech this fall and we were both really lost on W8. I guess, I am seriously thinking about buying an upgrade copy of W7 and going that route. I am just waiting for the family to decide to take a trip to Grandma's and leave me an entire weekend to sort it all out. In the mean time, I am still using X3 to produce music. I imported a song I am 95% done with from X2 into X3 and everything runs even better than before. I have already used the comping features and love them. I also love the fly out EQ. No crashes what so ever.

Mike - I would suggest that you buy a new hard drive to install W8 on instead of wiping clean the one you have. there are so many advantages to doing that. for one thing, you can copy from one drive to the other any non-installed files without hassle. the other is that you can still choose which OS to boot up in. now, saying that it won't be easy to set up the computer to allow a choice at bootup for either Vista or W8, in fact I'm not sure that it would be worth the trouble you'd go thru to get that situation. but you can at least have the choice by connecting or disconnecting the new hard drive. and while that will limit you from copying files from one to the other if you disconnect the new drive, you can still work around that. anyway - just thought I'd offer that advice to you.

What's your motherboard, Mike? and how many hard drives do you currently have? it's very likely that there will be at least one or two SATA ports available on the motherboard.
