I've got Battery 2 and BFD. I've tried SD2 that came with S8 and it's basically a waste of time.

I've got neither, so SD3 is looking good from over here...    And there's also mention above about kits from Steven Slate & Ocean Way.  I don't have those either, but have heard a lot of good things about them.

So I just don't see this addition as a waste of time in any way.    YMMV, of course.

The samples in OWD and SSD are good, but IMO these products do not come up to the standard of either BFD2 or Superior2 when it comes to playability and realism, all down to the implementation with e-drums, especially the high hat articulations.  This is a hard thing to get right, as it involves really designing the VSTi in such a way that it implements the samples in a realistic way and responds to the drummer's needs when playing the instrument.  The OWD multi-samples as I recall (correct me if wrong) are not as deep velocity-wise as BFD2 or Superior2, also.  IOW, a soft hit sounds like a hard hit just lower in volume.   The Platinum Samples expansion packs, e.g., have 256 layers of velocities for most pieces.  OW implements round robin techniques as their alternative.

The strength of SSD I believe is in drum hit replacement morseo that as a --complete-- drummer's tool.  But my direct experience is limited so please correct me if wrong, anybody.

But for people who don't drum (use MIDI loops) or don't have a drum VSTi currently, then this sounds like a good step forward of course.

As a drummer, and owner of Superior Drummer 2 and Steven Slate Drums 3.0, I have to say that SSD should be a fantastic addition to Sonar.  I love both Superior Drummer 2 and SSD 3 and use them both about the same.  It really depends on the material.  For less processed styles, Superior Drummer is outstanding!  SSD isn't so great for those styles.  But when you need HUGE processed bigger than life sounds, Superior Drummer doesn't even come close to what SSD does.  Also, SSD is excellent for drum replacement--even in less aggressive songs.

In my opinion, I think this is a great move for Cakewalk.  Most of us seem to agree that SD2 just doesn't cut it.  So why should we complain about an improved version?  With the addition of OWD and SSD, Sonar will at least come with some better drum sounds.  This will be great for those who can't afford to purchase 3rd party samplers.  Of course, we hope that these sample sets will at least include one full kit each.  I hate it when lite versions are missing something like a ride cymbal or rim click (such as BFD Lite for Pro Tools).

BTW.  Has anybody checked out the mod wheel with some of the open Hi Hat's in SSD 3.0?  Amazing!  I have yet to see this in any other sampler.

Hi Randy-

I think of non-linear editing as video, having multi-tracks to cut in and out, which of course S8 does with audio...can someone tell me what I don't understand about non-linear audio editing please?

"Non-linear" arranging is often referred to as "pattern-based" sequencing. You create discrete patterns which can be re-arranged on the fly, and when you're happy with the final result you can turn the arrangement into a "linear" sequence (ala the standard SONAR approach).

I've used FL Studio this way for a long time, and P5 had the Groove Matrix, which allows you to do the same thing. One advantage is that it lets you try out different sections of the song (alternate Verses, Bridges, Choruses, whatever) very easily. You can just mix 'n match this and that without moving to a new area to record in the linear sequence or dealing with lots of muting/soloing just to hear a different take on the same section. And it's much easier if, for example, your different takes on a section are of different lengths. You can do that easily with pattern-based sequencing, whereas with linear sequencing you're pretty much locked into a song structure once you've recorded even just a draft. You'd have to do lots of moving/deleting, blah-blah to change the basic structure.

It looks like that's what we'll have with the Matrix View, based on the column/row paradigm (close to P5's Groove Matrix), and if so that would be very cool!

HTH-

-Susan

If this is indeed the case...that I can  define sections "verse, chorus1, chorus2, bridge "etc   and then just tell sonar, the playlist....I am sold...I have been after this for years.

song arrangement is one of the areas that DAWS need to improve in.

I certainly hope it can be done as easy as that..

That would be cool but isn't that something sequencers have been doing for over 20 years?
I mean I had an old Ensoniq TS-12 that you could string together sequences (named chourus, verse, bridge, etc) in "song mode".
That said though it would be cool to do this (like the Cubase video you linked) and it would be so much easier than copy/pasting multiple tracks.
Nice voice BTW Wiz...good luck with the new album!

Yeah, when it flicks up just start typing from where the cursor is. Any alteration results in disaster.

Please tell me what you find so amusing. The idea that CW has decided to introduce a new version of Session Drummer? The idea that I thought some users might be interested (the key word being "some")?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but sometimes I just want to quote a couple of words from someone's long post. Knowing where the q...te starts and stops would be really beneficial. Isn't there some way to turn this back on?

Hi Nick-
Isn't there some way to turn this back on?

What I did here was to highlight the words above then double-click the "Reply to message" button (no selection from the drop-down).

Is that what you're looking for? I don't think there's a setting for the old behavior.

I guess it doesn't work well when quoting more than one person though.  It works better manually in that case. :-(

Why is that?  Have you played with Session Drummer 3 and found it not as good as Addictive drums?  Is Addictive drums native64?  Session Drummer 3 is native64!

As a Superior 2 owner, SD3 won't be a major selling point for me, but it won't be a throw away either. I especially like the fact that it's x64 since ToonTrack seems to be sitting on their hands in that regard. If it sounds really good, I could be converted. :-)

I've been using using Session Drummer 2 lately, but the sets are very limited despite decent sound quality.  What I'll probably be doing in the future is combining SD2 with my Yamaha YDD-60.  The YDD-60 allows for up to 6 toms as opposed to 3.  Plus, it has great cymbal and high hat sounds.

For those of you who haven't heard the Yamaha YDD-60, it's an awesome drum machine for a mere $200.  All of the drum and percussion sounds are great!  And there's a heck of a lot of sounds to choose from!  It's compact size makes for a great MIDI controlled instrument.

I knew that Papa.  It's just that sometimes you can't edit the message the way you want to because the formating is uneditable.  Notice my previous replies where I'm quoting myself.  I couldn't undo those so I had to leave 'em like that.  Before, I could go back and edit anyway I wanted.
