SHOULD I get X2 (and Windows 8)?

I have recently received a little bit of cash and I'm going to buy a new laptop. The laptop is a Toshiba (quadcore, I7, 6 gigs of ram upgradeable to 16, etc) has Windows 8. I'm thinking about also upgrading from X1 Producer Expanded to X2. The problem for me is that I've been reading all the horror stories about X2 and it's making me a little nervous. X1 has been ROCK SOLID. I don't want to spend money on something only to find out that I have to spend more time getting it working than I'd spend making music. So, should I go for it? The laptop isn't a touch screen, by the way.

I'm 853-->X2a ... no regrets with my config.  50-75% less crashes with octa-capture.  I didn't even know X1 was rock solid!

Buy X2. If you find it stable (you should) use it. if not go back to X1 and await service pack X2B. Oh and go 64 bit!

    Cheers.

You need to be more concerned with the Windows 8 and 64 bit compatibility of the tools that you want to use than with X2.  If your needed hardware and effects will operate nicely with the OS upgrade you can be pretty confident that X2 will work well for you.

On the other hand, if you need a bunch of older 32bit plugins or don't have Win 8 specific (not bailing wired) drivers for your hardware you might want to hold off on the upgrade for a while.  Cakewalk seems to he well ahead of the curve here and a lot of other products need to do some catching up before they operate nicely in Windows 8 and X2.  It might be time to consider housecleaning?

No probs here with Win 8 64 bit X2a.....

Dont listen to the horror stories, most people that post here have an issue of some kind (me too in the past!) but thats just the nature of forums.

Theres lots of Users out there very happy with Win 8 and X2a.

Thanks for all of your replies.... I'm going to go for it.... I'll be buying X2 in the next couple of days. I don't really use any "outside" plugins.... only the ones that come with Sonar, so that shouldn't be an issue. I DO use Sibelius, though, and I checked into that and it works on 64-bit and even supports 64-bit rewire, which is now a requirement for how I work. So, everything should be fine. By the way - does X1 run on Windows 8?

You might want to test out the X2 trial first to see if it works for you. I am happy running X2a on Win7 but everyone's experience is unique. The trial is not X2a but the original X2 with the quick fix applied.

Pretty solid here. Running X2a under Windows 8 x64. I am running a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. Very solid. I have an old project that had about 50 tracks... that when I switched to the Firewire interface under Win7 x64 would glitch SLIGHTLY on some of the busier parts of the mix. That same project under Windows 8 64bit (same computer) runs glitch free. It definitely has better performance.. I can't say how much more.. but improved for sure. And for me.. it's been rock solid.

Agree with the comments above.  Especially those of gcolbert.  Make sure you check your plugs and that W8 hardware drivers are available for your gear.  I recently got a new W8 PC and installed X2a 64.

Unlike some other threads I've yet to have a crash or other significant anomaly.  Last night I had was tracking a song with about 30 tracks: 6 independent Omnisphere instances, 2 DimPros, EZD and a number of wavs plus FX plugs and the PC on every audio channel.  Ok so this is a powerful workstation with loads of cpu and ram, but no drops outs, glitches or anything so far.

    Hi,

    I also agree.
I switched to Windows 8 (64-bit) because of the better performance and I was right to do it. I´m running Sonar X2a with an VS-100 and have no crashes belonging to Sonar or my VS-100. But be sure you have W8-drivers for your hardware to get this performance.

I looked at W8 and ran it's compability scanner. It says it is not compatable with Guitar Rig and a few other things I don't remember... now it could be that I need to update GRig... still, if you use it I would check it out.

IMO, if you go 64bit, go ALL 64bit... and by all means... do get an Octa-Capture. YMMV. You can keep X1 alongside X2 just in case. I wouldn't overwrite X1 or anything.

Good luck to you. Yeah, I like X2.

You better check into your M-Audio C600. It doesn't look like there's a Win8 driver available.

Yes, but now you've missed the $40 bargain for Windows 8 that expired on 1/31/13.

You should try the trial as was suggested. If your system is running X1 fine, you should be ok with X2. Normally I wouldn't comment on this but these horror stories you are reading may not be legit. We are looking into this issue.

Andrew, thanks for your response. I ended up buying a different laptop that has Windows 7. It's a Toshiba Satellite .... 64-bit, 6 gigs of ram (upgradeable to 10), I7 processor, solid state drive, Windows 7, etc. I had to get the laptop first, but Sonar X2 is next on the list. X1 has been completely solid for me....so, I'm gonna go with X2.

    Hello Jimmy-

I have x2a installed on my Win 8 Pro Ausu Laptop-i7 3770, etc, etc. It's fabulous. No touch screen here either.
Also running X2a on my desktop which is still Win 7x64-smooth
