SIGNAL ROUTE CHALLENGE! Record Two Audio Tracks Post FX Through Bus Output to New Track??

SO --  I record vocals and I LOVE the sound of my voice when singing into TWO mics together -- a Rode K2 and Sennheiser 416.

I would normally record each of these mics to its own audio track in Cakewalk Sonar (right now I'm on X1d build 535)

However, it would make EDITING much easier if I could get the combined results of these mics -- POST FX buses -- into ONE recorded audio waveform.

Right now, I have the two on their own audio tracks . . . sending to a common bus . . . and then that common bus goes to the Master bus. Here is a screenshot:

What I WANT is to be able to record the audio of the BUS "416 K2" BACK to a THIRD audio track . . . THEN have that audio track output straight to the Master Bus. That way . . . when I edit vocal takes . . . I won't have two copies of everything.

Is there a way to do this?

    Not within Sonar.
Some interfaces will allow a loop-back type function or if you're using a console you can take an output and route it to an input and record that to a track.

But no, inside Sonar there is no way to record a buss back onto a track.

EDIT: To add, if there is then it's a new feature that I am unaware of. (there, butt covered )

its probably better that way, if your having any problems with one mic and cable easier to get to the bottom of it, plus theres more detail for editing with the two files, my 2 cents worth

Thanks for the reply! It would be an extremely useful capability. While delay compensation would have to be managed -- if Sonar really wants to emulate the routing options of hardware . . . sending a bus back to an audio track -- at least for one iteration -- is essential.

Thanks for your thoughts. Here is where it is NOT better: Say that say I sing 15 takes of a song. And the "final" take for the track is the combined best of 15 takes. This is very common practice.

Normally I can a/b/c each word of each take somewhat easily when they are on the same audio track. I can audition, slice, dice, pick and chose. E.g. "Mary Had A Little Lamb" has "Mary" from Take 1, "Had a" from Take 8 and "Lamb" from Take 15.

This audition/slice/dice/pick/choose process becomes extremely cumbersome when dealing with two separate vocal waveforms for each take.

Yeah, Bounce To Track is always an option as Max pointed out.

    Would this work?

I guess it's time to upgrade from X1d build 535 to X2 and find out! I'll try this today and get back. It looks promising.

    Hi Tayzonday,
If I'm understanding you correctly you can absolutely do this in your current version of Sonar. Just select the tracks you want to bounce, click "track", then "bounce to tracks". In the following window choose "buses" as your Source Category, then choose which bus you want as your source, choose a destination and click OK. Easy peazy :)

EDITED: I didn't realize Bounce to tracks offered the option of bouncing busses.

When bouncing to track you wand to select "Busses" in the dialog and be certain to only have the vocal buss selected.

This will do what you asked.

Thanks! I do see the exact same help dialog in my help file -- so you're probably right.

I feel so dumb. When it says "The Track view Tracks > Bounce to Track(s) command lets you . . . "  . . . as far as I know I AM in the Track View ( View Menu at top, then select "track view") . . .

I see no "Track" menu from which to start this sequence. As you see in my screenshot, my menus at the top are File, Edit, Views, Insert, Process, Project, Utilities, Window, Help.

Where do I find the "Tracks" that leads to the "Bounce to Track(s)?" . . . it's not on the top menu.

Just below the transport buttons, in the track view menu bar. BTW, if you don't need the original tracks after bouncing, archive the tracks. That will reduce the CPU load and still have the tracks available (via unarchive) should you need to go back to the original tracks for some reason. I usually put the tracks that are archived into a folder of their own.

Does this work: Insert new audio track. Insert Sonitus:Gate or Compressor to FX bin. Open FX GUI and set Gate or Compressor to monitor Sidechain input. Insert send to the bus and target it to Sonitus:Gate or Compressor sc input.

Thanks! I found it. Through this process it is possible to complete each take using both mics, send that to a bus and and then bounce the result to its own track if I choose. Not exactly real-time but still potentially useful.

Thanks for the suggestion! I am able to send the bus to the plugin and place the plugin in the audio track's FX bin -- but seem unable to get the sidechain audio to pass "through" the plugin to the audio track in any useful way.

I guess passing the signal through is not what side-chaining is designed for, but it would still be nice to be able to do it.
