it has been a while, hasn't it? love the tone on the acoustic as ever, and the trademark SMB open airy mix! lovely leads James, esp the clean electric one. The piano works really well too - even the second time through with the synth double. this one - more than many of yours - would really do well with vocals...someone like Julibee, say.... welcome back, don't be so long next time! edit - you sure it's not supposed to be Largs Road??!!

Nice to hear you both back and I trust that things are reasonable. Cool tune and playing though there would appear to be a little bit of bass boom, which could of course just be a node in my room or the vagaries of Sound click encryption. Thanks for sharing.

Hi SMB-boys, excellent production ! Like this very much , nice sounding acoustic and lead guitars and that "distant" piano is very nice. Electric lead could be a little bit louder imho , gets buried in the mix sometimes. Greetings, Rik

It's good to hear ya'll again. This has a very sweet/sad kind of feel and those keys really anchor the piece to that nice vibe. It would sound nice with a vocal but it sure doesn't need it. Really Lovely music.

Larry and James, Nice to hear some sounds from the isle once again. I thought the lead sound placed further back worked in this piece. But then, my ears are still in training. LOL

I like the way this started, very tiny, that drum at 19 seconds? You may want to bring it down just a tiny bit till the electric guitar comes in? And maybe compress it just a little after that? I do really like the composition though, just a tiny recommendation. Opinions are like noses, everybody has one? And mine smells... Pretty song, that synth is an interesting choice. The lead guitar is beautiful. Again "tiny" I don't want to make it sound like I'm picking on Larry :-( That shaker thing at 2:40? I would bring it down a little. Keep in mind though, I listen in phones, so my perspective may be skewed. It's a nice song.

The tune is lovely. I agree with the lead guitar getting a little washed out. Keys are a perfect fit. The choice of drum is excellent as is the light synth and hand claps. These add a really nice character and texture to the song. Worth listening to multiple times. Great Job!

I hadn't really paid any attention to the song title, but as I was listening, something made me think of taking a journey, then I glanced up and saw the title and realized that I wasn't far off. Not sure that's worth much, but I think it says that you either captured the mood you were after, or named it aptly. Anyway, very nice relaxing piece with lots of interesting parts. I really like the section at 1:28. Good to hear some SMB again!

Thanks Mark! Yeah, I getcha..some ethereal vocals would suit quite well, in a Cocteau twins sort of vibe. Glad you like the piano, that Dim Pro 'Alien piano' patch is a favourite of mine. The inspiration for the tune is actually 'Fleuch Larg Road', just up in the forest here. I didn't include the 'Fleuch' 'cos I don't know how to pronounce it! Hi John, thanks for checking it out, glad it made your ears happy This is the first mix I've done in recent years solely through the Tannoys (headphones are busted), so bass is a problem in this untreated room. I'll see if I can sort that. Rik, thank you very much. It was a tough call on the electric lead, further back seemed to add to the general wistful vibe, maybe it's a touch too far back.

Hi, James and Larry, Amazingly beautiful song, you boys never disappoint! This is such a relaxing song full of subtle, yet rich textures that just whisks you away on a peaceful ride through the countryside. Great performances by both of you, and I really love the always tasteful and very classy guitar work. James, I think the boominess mentioned above is not actually the bass guitar, but more likely a drum or percussion instrument that seems panned far off to the right. Possibly a tympani or kettle drum of some type? Either way, it sounds fantastic, and this is another gorgeous feather in the SMB cap. Wonderful work! Bob

A most auspicious return to Songs for the SMB. A really lovely new tune , that is, and just so well played. If I gotta' pick nits, I guess, I would have liked to hear James' lead guitar a smidge more present. Overall... just fantastic!

Thanks Robby, I like your ideas about the percussion, I'll give them a try. I always mix with headphones, but not this time, so it was a very different experience. Brudda Tom! Many thanks for the kind words, I'm just heading off to check out the new DT... Thank you James! We do like to get those layers and textures working, an instrumental needs plenty of help to sustain the interest.

I always love the vibe of your tunes and that they take you on a journey. This was no different - nice stuff! Early on there were some percussion things going on that didn't seem to quite be "in the pocket", but then everything gelled nicely.

Thank you Scotty! I think Bob may be right about the 'boom' there's an 'apentemma' drum panned right which is really deep. I shall tame the wee beastie. That's worth quite a lot actually Dave, it's always nice to know we hit the intended mood. Thanks very much Bob, you're a pal, thank you kindly for all those nice comments. As I mentioned above, I believe you're spot on about the drum being the culprit, good catch. I'm more than a little relieved that the mix is relatively OK, 'cos I'm a bit lost without me headphones!

This sounds great except for the mix with you guitar strumming , I thought it was too over the top . Your backing music was superb and then you started with the guitar strumming with some guitar lead over that I think . The three elements were not mix right , this is my take on the mixing part of it . Bring in your guitar strumming at a lower sound level , your background thing going on is like your ground floor of a house . Then you build and mix so both are crisp and clear sounding , then bring in your melody lead . I could hardy make out the melody , there wasn't enough volume in your music to make it shine . More balance is the key , fix that and its going to sound much better . Thats my take on your cool song , I think its going to be a winner ! Radio

Hi Kenny, thanks - a renewal - that's a nice thought. I have been neglecting Lester lately in favour of a new Squier Tele, but he came down off the wall for this one. Thanks very much indeed Phil, that's very kind of you. Hi Dave, thanks a lot sir! I'll have a look at the percussion, make sure everything is where it should be.
