May I ask what caused you to pose that question? Are you getting noise?

Sure! Record in 24 bit, 24/44 is fine but 24/higher is great too!

Dont crank your preamp so high like you would for analog recording and record signals lower than you would on analog tape, say around -15 to -10 db.

You will pick up less noise in the background and still have pristine, detailed recordings, and overall NSR will be quite good.

You realize that recording in 24/ 364kHz isn't enough: you should also face your primary DAW computer north-northwest (north-northeast if in the southern hemisphere) and also have the mic at right angles to the chicken bones. You DO have chicken bones, don't you?! Only then will the signal to noise ratio be as close to perfect as possible (i even sprinkle gelatin into the mics, 'cause y'know: horse hooves).
It also really helps to not have a noisy pre-amp and fx chain and good signal. And I am attempting turning off my noise machine, fan, Harley Davidson,  muscle car, talkative  girlfriend (well not turned off: just some studio duct tape), teletype, jack-hammer and scram jet simulation engines,  and my lucky magic chattering teeth toy.

[Later] That seems to boost the SNR quite a bit, actually. It's amazing I never thought of that before. It's also helped conversing with my clients. And created a lot of space by removing the vehicles from the studio. Honestly I don't know why- or how- they were here in the first place.
Thanks for the heads up, pwal!

SteveC: Apparently, yes, you can remove vehicles from the studio! Whodathunk?!

Thanks, Lance! Be sure you sacrifice the chickens properly!

My e-book "Carbon offset credits and the Home Studio" can be bought where ever horribly pedantic and pseudo-intellectual ebooks are to be found. My one big tip is "start big and cut cut cut" That way, even if DON'T need carbon monoxide and exhaust in your studio by removing it later, you're seen as "doing something". And that can work wonders for marketing. For example, I can now claim that after removing the vehicles from my studio and adding a small plant (plastic of course) my studio is the greenest studio in a one house radius. It also going to have the added benefit of getting the EPA, Fire Marshall, Workplace Safety Commission, Animal Welfare, and child protective services off my back, too.

And I just remembered why the vehicles were here in the first place. A client wanted a part to sound like he was on his last breath so I thought "reality is better than faking it" and brought in the Harley. We got the part- it's awesome!- but the guy hasn't paid up yet.

My other big tips in the ebook are "don't kill your clients" and: "get paid upfront."

And there's a whole section on appeasing the studio deities! Including how to make and where to find proper attire and ceremonial garb.

Then we can apply tape sims and vintage warmers to get that grit we all grew up with.

yeah, but I do like the idea of having a clean signal I can tweak with the amount of grit I want.

I think we totally have it better than the guys with tape and hardware. We have more control over the vibe-

Maybe the plugins sound a little different than the old hardware and tape, some way different sounding, but they still bring the grit and vibe and it is effective!

I can totally get the vibe with the amazing tools we have these days. No snake oil needed

How about the one from Izotope that sells for $39.99? Can vocal or instrument takes be Opened in it and the noise removal options be applied, yielding the same quality recording but with less noise or will their consumer grade software give it a consumer grade sound?
