SOLVED: 8.5 installation/update flaw ?

hi there,

it has been a long time since i had posted my last message here...

my problem:

i downloaded 8.5 and wanted to install it on a w7 64 (fresh install) and the downloaded installer said something like "you dont have the right version on your computer to install this" - well - no - there isn`t any version on it at all.

so i looked up for my original 8.5 dvd and installed it from there and it worked.

NOW trying to update to the latest version of 8.5 - again from the download section - resulted in THE SAME message like above.

and then i have to read on the support site that they only offer help for the current versions.

funny enough i was always having problems installing stuff like dim pro (form original dvds sice version 7 or download versions - it nerver got any better) which made me stop using it but what is wrong now with sonar itself ???

i´d be very thankful for any suggestions - as i want to use 8.5 in its lates form for various reasons instead of x3 that i just dont get comfortable with.

THANKS

The original download of 8.5 required an 8.0 installation before running the upgrade. As far as updates, are you downloading them from the support page http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/By-Product/SONAR%208.5?

hello & thanks for yor reply.

it is that page - yes.

as for the version: yes that ist what also came into my mind - so i installed it directly from the 8.5 dvd instead of making it the complicated way. but still the problem with the 8.5.3 update persists.
to be honest i cant imageine that the update itself is looking back for an already updated 8.0 when there is a clean official 8.5 on the system. ( i have original dvds of 7, 8 and 8.5)

on the other hand i am almost 100% sure that i had previusloy done clean 8.5 installs from the net version on my other computer in the past.

maybe i can find one of those update patches downloaded years ago on some harddrive... :-)

Updates should not expect 8.0 only the upgrade. I have not installed 8.5 in years. While there is no more tech support for the product, Cakewalk should still field questions regarding installation. A call to support may help sort this out.

maybe i can find my working updates - but probably i deleted them because "the stuff is online anyway"
which is a good example for not relying on anything but yourself :-)

in that case a call will be the way to go.

    best regards.

or maybe some cakewalk person reads this and tunes in to help - at least they did sometimes back in the old days :-)

    edit:

    user error :-)

actually i was totally sure that the 8.5.3 patch was a cumulative patch to 8.5

    guess what - its not...

so installing 8.5.1 ans 8.5.2 did the job for 8.5.3

i am sorry - but its wierd - because i really was totally sure it wouldnt be necessary...

At that time, the updates were not cumulative - they are now in current versions of Sonar.

I lost my Sonar 8.0 install disc, and could never retain 8.5.3 on subsequent computer builds, because it insisted on having 8.0 installed prior to 8.5 being allowed to install.

When X1 first appeared, many many folks had a great deal of difficulty transitioning to the different ways of doing things, but many of those same folks that stuck it out and gave those new ways a chance came to appreciate the changes and found they didn't want to go back.  8.5.3 was brilliantly built for all kinds of keyboard shortcuts and such, and had a bit of a different workflow and a giganticly different look than X1, but it was difficult for new users to really get a handle on all of those key bindings/combinations to get productive.  So, Cakewalk invested a HUGE effort into a complete interface redesign, and it has really paid off for them.

    i totally agree with you...

personally i am still much faster at editing on 8.5.3
i bought x2 and then x3 but for me its no real advantage.

in the end the most important thing is how well you can use it and not the version number :-)

    best regards
