SOLVED Copy Automation Lane Envelope and Paste Into Other Tracks' Automation lanes

I'm using Sonar X3 Lexington and need to copy an automation lane envelope to other tracks' automation lanes.

I've searched the online manual and followed the 'copy special, select automation only then paste' page but this doesn't work.

Is there some other process I'm missing? I'd be grateful for any advice with this.

Many thanks.

Could Someone Please Confirm - Sonar X3 Track Envelopes 2016/01/13 12:55:18 (permalink)
I'm using Sonar X3 Lexington and am trying to copy and paste a track automation envelope (volume).

I posted yesterday regarding Take Lanes envelopes but had no replies so I dispensed with those and went for the track envelopes still without success.

I've followed Scott Garrigus' excellent video for 'Automating Data Selections' including Sonar X2 and later which includes copying and pasting envelopes:
http://www.digifreq.com/digifreq/video.asp?ID=6

I've also followed the Sonar Online Manual for the same thing:
https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR%20X3&language=3&help=Automation.11.html#1154570

I've followed both the above to the letter and still it doesn't work. I don't know if I'm just missing something here or this isn't working in my copy of X3.

Could someone just try it for me and let me know if it works for you?

I'd really appreciate any help with this.

Thanks.

Ok .. I've discovered what is stopping copying and pasting envelopes into other tracks.

If 'Paste Special' has been used at all during a session, even not involving envelopes, that will stop copying and pasting envelopes from working. I am able to reproduce this every time.

The solution I have found is to close Sonar completely then reopen Sonar and reload the score. Don't use 'Paste special' at all for anything before working with the envelopes. Using 'Edit Copy' then Edit Paste 'Paste' or 'Ctrl C then 'Ctrl V', I am now able to copy and pase envelopes with ease. Using 'Paste Special' after that stops it from working again.

I'm not sure if this is intended or a bug but it took me hours to painstakingly recreate every envelope and node in a complex classical strings section before I discovered the solution.

That sounds like a possible bug. Using 'paste special' once should not disable automation cut/copy/paste until restart. I'll see if I can reproduce it...

Hmmm. No, I can't, I'm afraid. Envelope cut/copy/paste works as expected before and after one or several 'Paste special' actions. Tried it a few times, no issue at all. Which obviously doesn't help you specifically, but it does suggest it's not a fundamental bug in Lexington. I'm on Platinum, which edition are you using?

Thanks for for trying out and this confirms it should all be working here.

I have Sonar Platinum Lexington too so the mystery deepens. I just tried it again with a completely new document with just two audio tracks and zero plugs or any other processing. Same thing, it all works fine until I use the copy Special then it all stops working.

Ah well, at least I now have a solution.

Thanks again; it's much appreciated.

I may have found another solution.  I had a similar problem.  I would special copy just the track automation and the try to special paste the automation lane.  Then I'd have the automation pasted but the audio data would disappear.  At one point the special paste was not operational - grayed out.  But I've found that with a special copy of automation only and then special paste using the "Blend Old and New" in what to do with existing material and "Paste as new clips" under What to paste, gets the job done.  I was replacing "old with new" and since I had no audio data copied, I guess it pasted "no" data into the track.

There are most definitely bugs in the copying and pasting routine, not only for track automation, but for standard MIDI data as well (notes).     It's been around since Platinum 22.8 and I cannot imagine that the developers don't know about it.

I have the same issues coping a volume envelope (Sonar X3 Studio).
Using "paste special" with only "Track/Bus Automation" selected the audio is wiped out.

My work around:
Paste the automation to a new track.
Then copy the audio to the new track special paste using the "Blend Old and New"
Rename (set colour etc) on my new track.
The delete the old audio track

Cheers,

Recently discussed using CbB and I just tried in X3 Producer using this method and it worked OK.

FWIW, upgrade to CbB is free
