(SOLVED) Don't Crack Magnetic - Is it just me or this doesn't make sense?


I went to update. Redeemed my coupon from Nomad, accessed Don'tCrack's webstore. 

Added the upgrade to my cart. 
It showed: Magnetic $20 upgrade - Price: $149. :S
 
Strange.
Oh well, entered my coupon and hit redeem.

Turns out that sales taxes are calculated on the price of the full ($149). So I end up paying more in taxes than for the update.

Is it me or is this completely messed up? I mean, I already paid for the full version, shouldn't the taxes be calculated on the UPGRADE price?

It's the first time ever I am asked to pay taxes based on anything but the actual price of what I'm buying. When I buy anything that's on sale for $20, the taxes are calculated on the sale price, not on the MSRP.

    Seems pretty screwed up to me Rain.   I dunno?

    Not that $42 seems prohibitive, but, still, that's odd. Plus they're located in Montreal, so they should know about taxes there. Maybe there's something I don't quite grasp.

    Anyway, I e-mailed them and notified them via FB.

    FYI, in case any fellow Canadian happens to read this and wonder... I received a reply on FB saying that this was indeed an issue and that they were working on a fix. :)

    It's the same with things like phone rebates. If you get a $200 phone free when you sign a new contract in California, you pay sales tax on the $200 even if you paid nothing for the phone itself!

    Well, yes, I saw similar promotions - pay only taxes. Though usually, the taxes are calculated on the actual price you pay. 

    At any rate, in this case, I'm buying the upgrade, not the full software. So at least, taxes should be calculated on the actual item I'm buying. As they admitted, there is indeed an issue w/ canadian taxes when using the coupon. Hopefully, they'll have that fixed before the sale ends.

    Following up - Issue has been taken care of. Just ordered the upgrade and received my download link + serial w/in seconds. :)

    I really dug this plug-in when I first demo'ed it, but couldn't really find a use for it in actual projects. The $20 bargain was a non-brainer, if only to make sure that I have the latest version and can keep up w/ the updates and make sure that I can still use it in the future if need be.
