SOLVED Former Logic Pro User Question: Are Caf Files Supported In Sonar x1 ?
I downloaded this for $20: http://www.wav-mp3.com/mp3/caf-to-mp3.htm Problem solved :) Hello to all, Due to a recent macpro motherboard meltdown, I've built myself a pc, switched over to windows7 64bit and have been using Cubase 6 as my main program for the last three months, leaving logic pro behind. One thing I miss about Logic is the included sound library which are caf files. I recently received a promo email for a Sonar X1 Producer upgrade for $79 which said it was compatible with caf files so I bit and bought it. However, I'm unable to load or import any of the files. Am I missing something or is this a known issue? I've been messing around with Sonar in my spare time cause it reminds me of logic and I like all the drag and drop stuff going on. I can see myself working with the program on some projects especially if I could use my sound library. So the question is: Is Sonar X1 Producer compatible with caf files and if so, how do I get them to open. Thanks, adavis

How are you trying to use these files? It says in the Reference Manual that X1 can import .caf files but as audio in an audio track. If these are samples then you may need a sampler to use them.

the caf format does seem to be listed as a supported file type for both import and export options. i dont have any .caf files, but was just able to export one and then reimport it. Sonar would not let me drag the .caf from my desktop into a session however, had to use File > Import > Audio

So, what happened when you imported the cal file? cal is not an audio file. It is a scripting language. Used to manipulate the program. Importing/exporting makes little sense since the files are programs that RUN for a limited amount of time, mostly inserting and changing midi data. J

Hi John thanks for responding! I've tried importing and dragging them into X1 on an audio track without success. The files are audio and I can play them back using Quicktime but not itunes. I was hoping I wouldn't have to use a batch converting program to convert the files but it looks like I may have too. I've searched the forum and found two other users having the same problem. adavis

I haven't tried that yet but will to see if it works on my system. How responsive is cakewalk phone tech support? Looks like I'll have to give them a call. Thanks again, adavis

Considering that Apple includes those sounds for use with Logic/Garage Band and that even the Jam Packs themselves are sold exclusively for Logic and GB users, I wouldn't be surprised if they couldn't be opened in other apps (copy protection). EDIT - That's odd. I went and tested it. I managed to open Logic's bundled .caf files in both Amplitube and Studio One. So it looks like my first idea wasn't accurate. I don't have a PC here so I can't test it in other apps. RE-EDIT - It's not impossible that the fact that I'm testing on a Mac makes the difference. Caf is not a format, but rather a "container" - the audio inside can be whatever, even compressed format. Could be that the compression codec is available all across Mac OSX, but can only be decrypted by Quicktime Player on the PC. Ok, I'll stop here before I make this whole issue even more confusing. Sorry I couldn't really help.

Very good point Rain. I wonder if they can be opened in some other DAW besides Logic of course. What the OP might try is creating a caf file in X1 and then importing it.

I'm also having the same problem. Quicktime plays it, but Sonar gets a direct show error.

I've never had occasion to import a CAF file, so I just tried it under each version of SONAR that supports CAF imports: 7, 8, 8.5 and X1. (CAF support was introduced in SONAR 7.) In each case, the result was the same error message: DirectShow Error [0x80040265] Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported. I was also unable to open the CAF file in Adobe Audition, Audacity, Wavosaur or Foobar2000. I'm inclined to conclude from this that it is either a limitation of the version of DirectX that I'm running, which is likely out of date, or a limitation of the O/S (I'm on XP32 SP3). I doubt it's a SONAR issue per se.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Hhhmmm.....I am still looking for the issue. Cake support doesn't even know what a CAF file is.
