SOLVED! General Error when I try to save
I did a search and can't believe I'm the only one with this issue, but I can't save! I keep getting "General Error" or rather I get it much more often than not. Sometimes if I leave a project open for a while (an hour +), I'll be able to save edits. Mostly I get the General Error, regardless of using Save, Save As, or Save Copy. I have been working on one project, so I'll go check if that is specific to that or not. I have just "finished" restoring and "rebuilding" my studio PC's programs having had to use an image from July last year. I ran CCC, too. THANKS! Michael

I'm aware of it. Hit the spacebar (for play), stop, and then save. You should be good to go.

Hmmm, I think I'm in the habit of playing back an edit and stopping, before hitting save, but I'll experiment. Perhaps I'm not always using the spacebar..... Thanks Sacalait. Michael

Yep, I posted with the same problem a few months back. Like it was said earlier, hitting play and then stop allows the save to work. It's a weird one...

Thanks mrpippy2. I guess that covers it. It is a little weird, to consider, but if it works.... yahoo! Michael

Is this some kind of weird Win 10 thing? I see Sacalait lists Win 8.1 in his sig. Never seen anything like this on my Win7 rigs... What happens if you do a "save as"? T

there are quite a few search results for this issue. Typically plug ins that cycle (continue to run) will cause this error. Any VST-I's ?

You're right Chuck. I must have worded my search "funny"....... thanks for the links. As far as VSTi's, I have Groove Agent 4 and 2 tracks of AD2. I got it to open, after 3 tries and "truncated" messages. Did "the space bar shuffle" and then did a save. That worked. @ Tom Didn't matter which way I tried to save it. Thanks to you all. Now I'm back to arranging my drum track. Michael

So, cycling plugins would be drum programs, until you bounce them to audio. What other kinds of VST FX? Instruments cycling makes sense to me, too. Does that "go away" with freezing? Obviously bouncing them to audio "cures it". Michael

Anything that generates or buffers audio can keep on outputting data after playback is stopped. That mostly means synths and samplers, because most buffered effects (e.g. reverbs and delays) will empty their buffers quickly (just make sure to enable the "play effect tails after stopping" [FlushOnStop in aud.ini] option). However, some poorly-written plugins don't know (or don't care) that playback has ceased and continue to spit out what's essentially random noise. Why, exactly, this is a problem when saving projects I do not know. I suspect it's due to SONAR attempting to grab some resource that's already in use. Kind of like when you try to delete a file and Windows won't let you because another program already has it open. The fact that it's only an issue with a small percentage of users suggests that it's not a Windows issue, but more likely something to do with a driver. Topping that list of suspects would be the audio driver, but many other drivers come into play such as USB, Firewire, disk drives, even video and network drivers and active anti-malware that inserts itself between programs and the file system. Personally, I have never experienced this phenomenon even though I only render soft synths near the end of the project's life cycle. I have, however, had issues (e.g. pegged-out meters and large blasts of noise) with certain plugins that continuously output random garbage.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

pentimentosound So, cycling plugins would be drum programs, until you bounce them to audio. What other kinds of VST FX?
Bitflipper described it in pretty good detail (buffering). -In every sonar project, your title is listed on the very top of the screen along with an Asterisk if the project is dirty/not saved. So a tell tale sign you have a cycling plug in is to save the project, then look for the * next to the project name. If you save your project and then its dirty (without making any moves), you have a cycling plug in (VST-I, Exc).

Thank you, both Bit and Chuck. I know about the asterisk, but didn't know about that last part. "If you save your project and then its dirty (without making any moves), you have a cycling plug in (VST-I, Exc)." I'll be on the lookout for that! I have inserted some VSTi's in this particular project, but deleted them before closing. I wonder if they could be the issue? Michael

I too have seen the 'General Error' on a handful of occasions. Each time I just 'saved as' and changed the project name and all was fine from there. Good to read some additional info about it.
