[SOLVED] How to solve the "Cakewalk Missing Plug-in Stand-In" error?

(Solution is in post #14).

I have a new computer with new drive letters.
I reinstalled everything as the old computer, but drive letters are not the same. May be some plug-ins are in other folders too.
The problem now is that when I try to open an old project, Sonar accuses the error below:

In this case, Altiverb is installed, in drive "C:" and before it was in drive "H:".
How to solve this?

Hey there - after reinstalling, did you add the new location to your plugin paths in preferences?

Delete the plugin reference in the project and load a current one in its place. save it and the message will no longer appear.

Yes, I added the new location when I reinstalled the plugin.
If I delete the plugin reference in project, I'll lose all configuration changes I did in that instance. Also, when deleting a plugin, Sonar deletes all envelop automations that I have inserted of this plugin.
Any way to solve this without deleting it?

The plugin will need to be in a folder Sonar expects it to be in for Sonar to find it. You could add that location as another VST folder to scan in Plugin manager.

The plugin is correctly installed and working on C: (for new projects), but as I said, my old project is referring this plugin's instance as H: (old drive letter). I don't have H: anymore.
So, in my old project I have a "H:" reference that can't be changed nevermore?

This is where preset mgmt falls down a little bit. It would be awesome if you could try and force the preset settings in cases where the substitute is identical.

First, does it show up in your plugin list?   If so, try adding it to a track just to be sure it still works.   I had exact error and fixed it today (with Altiverb too!)   It needs to be in the same place it was before.   Today, I just copied the DLL  from Cakewalk vstplugins to steinberg/VSTplugins.  That did it.   (It actually is still in 2 places but it works with my old projects and loads fine for new. I haven't tried to get rid of the old one in cakewalk yet but for now it ain't broke so Im not fixin it anymore

Yes, as I said, it can't be in the same place because I don't have the drive H: (original place) anymore.

You should be able to recreate the original path (H:\...) by creating a virtual drive. Look here :
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/5291/how-to-create-a-virtual-hard-drive-in-windows-7/

it will work also on Windows 8.1

Good luck

It is possible to change drive letters to get the original arrangement. In Windows 8.1, Windows-x k (i.e. press the windows key and x at the same time, then let go and press k) brings up the disk management screen. Then right-click a volume name in the top pane. It gives the option to change drive letter and paths. If you want to swap two letters, you'll have to use a third intermediate letter.

Be aware this will screw up other programs that rely on drive letters. It's best to do this as a first step after a clean install of Windows.

Cheers, Peter.

Hey! Based on your two last suggestions, I found a DEFINITIVE SOLUTION for changing drive letters: Virtual Subst
With this little program, I can create an ALIAS for my current drive letter, hence I can have 2 (or more) letters for the same partition: H: and E: are the same disk partition.
Then the old plugin references in my old project (to H:) are solved!

Well that's a workaround but it's a shame Sonar can't resolve plugins by their ID if they can find the plugin.

I can't make sense of what's going on in this thread. Sonar absolutely does not care what drives your plug-ins are on.

When ever I see this error myself I wonder at the thinking that the end user needs the CLSID. I understand it's technical value but what would be more useful would be a browse button so the the user could point sonar to the intended plug (good bad or indifferent) and Sonar would fix up it's inventory accordingly.

Which would generate more support calls as users point sonar to the wrong plug but I for one, would like a chance to fix that issue on the fly globally right as it happens.

I can only imagine this that this is not the way vst inventory works under the hood or musicians (a.k.a mere guitar players like me) would not be shown a CSLID as it that was the key to it all.

At first you must show up the browser, and select the plugin pull down menu.
And then you must slect the rayout of plugin, so as soon as open cakewalk plug-in manager.
And then  tap or click the searching for VST plug-in's tab.
Then the searching system is started and discover your plug in of all that is in anywhere.

Re: How to solve the "Cakewalk Missing Plug-in Stand-In" error? 2015/07/19 08:14:04 (permalink)
SONAR doesn't care about drive letters. However older versions of SONAR relied on short file names for plugins to build a unique id. This causes problems when the short file name changes or if the plugin is installed on a hard drive which doesn't support short file names.
See the following post that describes this issue. The short file name problem was resolved in SONAR X3 by changing the plugin GUID system. However projects saved from older versions still contain the short name based ID's.

If you look at the Class ID of the NEW version of Altiverb on your system you will probably see a difference in the numbers. Normally SONAR brings up a list of choices to remap the plugin when that happens so I'm not sure why you are not getting that prompt. If you post the new class ID of Altiverb it might clarify why that doesn't happen.

Anyway once you resave the project on the system from SONAR you shouldn't see this problem again because the ID's will be unique now irrespective of short names.

This definitely doesn't happen all the time and I wish it did, I've had to give up on a number of older projects because there didn't seem to be any way to fix up plugin references.

Noel, you may be right.
Let's review my steps to my solution (which might not be necessary):
  1. My old project  was referred to "Altiverb.dll" on my old computer path "H:\Audio\Vst32\Altiverb 6.dll"
  2. In my new computer, I installed Altiverb in default folder (c:\program files (x86)\cakewalk\vstplugins\Altiverb 6.dll)
  3. My solution was create an Alias for C: in Virtual Subst as "H:", and then copy Altiverb 6.dll to a folder with the same old path "H:\Audio\Vst32"
After this the old project was opened without errors.

But to my surprise, I decided to do a test: I dismounted H: (removed the reference H: from Virtual Subst) and also I deleted Altiverb 6 .dll from \Audio\Vst32, that is, I got the same situation I was in when the error of this issue was described, ie,  Altiverb 6.dll only in c:\program files (x86)\cakewalk\vstplugins.

After this, I opened an old project from backup, to be sure it was untouched. And the old project was opened normally!!!

How is this possible?

Would if I had only created a folder C:\Audio\Vst32 and copied Altiverb 6.dll to there, I would not have had this problem?

Hard for me to explain exactly what happened without seeing your inventory but the symptoms are consistent with short file name problems that we solved. Plugin load substitution works like this:

SONAR builds a list of all available plugins in the scan folders when doing a scan and creates unique guids for them. In older versions of SONAR this guid was dependent on the unique ID of the plugin and its short file name.

When attempting to load a plugin in a project SONAR looks for the guid from the  project file in the inventory. If there is a direct match (which happens most of the time) it loads the plugin. If a match is not found it does a "wildcard match" which looks for entries with the same unique id but different short file names. If it finds a single entry it is automatically substituted. If it finds more than one you get a substitution dialog. If there is no match found at all you get a missing plugin dialog.

So if you got no match then either the ID itself changed or the plugin was not scanned for some reason in the scan path itself. Those are the only options.
Any as I said before once you resave after you have made the plugin load, you should not encounter this issue again as long as you don't rename your plugins or replace them with updated versions with a different ID. Also this only applies to VST2 plugins. VST3 plugins already have a concept of a guid as the identifier.
