SOLVED: MIDI controller not in MIDI Devices

I just bought an M-Audio Keystation 49 MIDI controller.    I plugged it in and installed the driver.
But when I went to: Edit > Preferences > MIDI > Devices, there is nothing in MIDI Input or Output.
 
I tried re-installing the driver, but it's still not showing up.   I would appreciate any help.

Nothing at all.

You should see the MIDI ports of the 2i4, even though nothing is plugged into them. Do they show up?
 
No.    I used a Yamaha PSR-550 keyboard for years, but the MIDI on it died.   

Did you install the drivers before or after you plugged in the Keystation?
 
After.

Have you tried connecting the Keystation to a different USB2 port after you installed the drivers?
 
I've tried 2 different USB ports.   

Are you turning the Keystation and 2i4 on before you start Sonar?
 
Yes.  
 
In X3, if you turn on a USB device after the program is opened, you will usually be prompted to use the device.
Sometimes I have to close and restart X3 to get my MIDI devices to register. Have you tried that?
 
I have tried that.

Do you let your computer go to sleep? Don't do that, especially if Sonar is running.
 
I always turn my computer off after I'm done recording.

Sorry to answer your question with a bunch more questions, but it may help to find the problem.

1.  Are you sure that USB cable is good?
 
2.  Are you sure you are plugging it into a USB 2 port, and not a USB 1 or 3 port?
 
3.  Have you looked at the loaded device drivers for this keyboard in Device Manager, to make sure it shows up there - AND is using the appropriate drivers, AND is showing as working properly?
 
4.  If you fire up a stand-clone synth, does the keyboard show up in that software's MIDI devices in the options? (taking Sonar out of the equation to test that the keyboard, Windows, and some synth are playing nice together)
 
5.  Have you double-checked to make sure you have downloaded and installed the correct driver for your OS version and that it is for the correct keyboard/controller?
 
6.  Some controllers have to be plugged into the very same USB port that it was plugged into when the drivers were installed.  Is your keyboard/controller plugged into the same port as when you installed its drivers?

I believe that should read "stand-alone synth".
 
A bad cable would prevent the device from communicating with Sonar (and Windows). If the device is not "present" on the system, it will not appear in your MIDI Devices list.
 
The Device Manager stuff will be in Windows, under Computer.

This one is still bugging me. It would appear that Sonar is not recognizing any MIDI I/O.
Do you recall seeing the 2i4 MIDI at any time on this machine?
I don't have an answer yet, but this looks like a key point.

I ended up calling Sweetwater.   The tech guy went through a list of things and said something in my audio had been disconnected.   I have no idea exactly what or how.    Anyway, it took a while to get it reconfigured, but it's running now.
