[SOLVED] - Matching tempo to recorded tracks
My son and I are collaborating on several songs. He's in Japan and I'm in Arizona. He sent me 2 trumpet, a slide trombone, and Sax parts on separate .wav files. He used a metronome and the parts blend nicely when imported into Sonar X3e. What is the best way to match the tempo? If I try to adjust the tempo it messes up the song. (Parts of the song as written alternate between roughly BPM=62 and 162). I would like the grid in Piano role match his tempo so I can add other parts, make sure the timing is correct, especially the drum parts. Walt

The tempo map is your friend. You can define tempo changes in it for the song. I'd also suggest using markers to mark where the tempo changes are so your PRV work will be easier.

There are settings for tracks and buses that can be changed to absolute time. Maybe clips too. Once set, you can change the tempo with impunity.
StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen. I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

I'm using the tempo map, but unfortunately it's not being friendly...I also use markers for all my songs and yes they are helpful. Walt

Here's the real issue. I can easily change the tempo with the tempo map, but the tracks are no longer sync'ed with each other. For example, when I change the tempo the bass track will come in later than the trumpet part. Walt

Hey Wally,
Change the time base for each of your clips. In the Clips tab of the Inspector, there is a setting called time-base (pg. 596 of the Sonar X3 pdf manual). I think if you set that to absolute, the clips should stop moving and maintain their alignment when you change the tempo in the project.
There is also a feature where you can tap the beats to a midi track using a midi controller and then create a tempo map from that MIDI track. It's called Fit to improvisation (pg. 775 of the manual).
I should say in advance, that I have not used the features myself, as of yet. So I won't be able to help beyond this message.

I would probably use the set beat/time option for the downbeats of several measures, maybe a couple at the beginning of the song, and a few later on. Then playing it back, notice what the tempo is set to. That might give you an idea what the actual tempo was at.
Or better yet, just ask him what the BPM was when we recorded it?
