(SOLVED!) Midi Shows in Widget but no Note on/off in X1
See Bottom Message for latest... Thanks! Enjoying the X1abcd... journey. But I feel like a noob as I cannot get my keyboard (Novation Remote 61 SL) to play in any midi track. Pressing play starts playback, stop = stop, rewind = rewind but play notes and nothing. Input of the track is set to Novation port 1, or all inputs omni or whatever and nothing... The little midi widget shows activity lights and I can play into the Rapture microhost just fine but... Any ideas? Thanks for your help... ggg

Do you have the "echo on" )))) lit up on the midi track?

+1 on lorneyb2's suggestion. In addition is the output of the tracks set to the synth's input? Are the synth's outputs routed correctly? i.e. to your audio interface output, either directly or via busses? If you are seeing MIDI activity but no sound then a routing issue or the echo button would be my best guess.

Thanks lorneyb2 and FastBikerBoy. Yes input echo is on for the midi track. Routing at this point is very simple Midi in from Remote SL 1 (Omni) - Midi out to DimPro, Rapture, Velocity... Audio out to Master. I neglected to mention that the tracks play back just fine. Just no sound when I play the keys... ggg

Do you have the solo button active by any chance? If you change VST's without deactivating it from the track after changing the track won't connect with the new output as soloed. This, however, wouldn't explain why it is playing back after.

Is the audio engine turning off for some reason? If you don't have the transport running and it is turning off you'll get the symptoms you're describing. i.e. no sound while playing the keyboard but sound when playing back as the audio engine will auto start with the transport.

- I cannot get my keyboard (Novation Remote 61 SL) to play in any midi track.
- Pressing play starts playback, stop = stop, rewind = rewind but play notes and nothing.
- Input of the track is set to Novation port 1, or all inputs omni
- The little midi widget shows activity lights when keys are pressed
- I can play into the Rapture microhost just fine
- input echo is on
- Routing at this point is very simple Midi in from Remote SL 1 (Omni) - Midi out to DimPro, Rapture, Velocity... Audio out to Master.
- the tracks play back just fine. Just no sound when I play the keys...
- Tried a completely new project... same thing.
- Opened P5 just as a test and it worked fine.
- @fastbikerboy re: "audio engine turning off" ...opened up the PRV and can play by mouse...
New as of 02/19/2011 - Got a copy of Midi Ox and the keys show note on/off data as do the drum pads
- When I tested the drum pads they are passed through to the track, which was in omni, and the synth sounded... keys - no
- Keys are midi channel 1, pads - 16, track input is Remote SL 1 (Omni)
Any ideas? Thanks for your help... ggg

Just to clarify, do the tracks record data from your Novation, i.e. the data is getting to the track?

This is a stab in the dark TBH because I'm really struggling to think what could be wrong, but you haven't got your MIDI device input port named as a "friendly name" but assigned to the wrong port. Other things that come to mind are if the Novation has more than one output port for data. I'm not au fait with it but my PCR for example has 2 output ports, to which either data from the controllers or keys can be sent. By default for the PCR they are on different ports but I don't knopw whether that's the case for the Novation. I think it's fair to say it must be an input problem. Have you tried selecting other inputs just to see if the Novation data is on a different port to the one you think it is, assuming again it has more than one? Sorry, it's probably not much use but from your setup description I can't really see anything wrong.

So I had to dig through the manual for the SL to find where to edit settings. Once there I figured that the keyboard and drum pads were xmitting on different ports. So, I went through all of the possible out port settings for the keyboard and found that X1a doesn't like the Remote SL to output on U1. It does however like U2. Midi Ox cannot see the data now but X1 can. Anyway... Thanks to FastBikerBoy for hanging in with positive thoughtful suggestions. lorneyb2 also many thanks. One more techno block to creativity solved... or at least worked around. ggg

Glad you've got it going. Sounds like there might be a bit of a driver issue going on there. Are you running the latest drivers? Perhaps that's why X1 is only seeing one of the ports. Again I can only compare it to my PCR but with that for example there are two input ports showing in X1 - PCR 1 & PCR 2, they both come in on the USB connection. One carries keys data and the other controller maybe yours is similar.

Can you give me the instructions of what you did? I have having the same issue. Did you change the port in the Global settings? I tried that but it is still not working for me. Thanks for your help.

This is how I understand midi keyboard controllers: There are two ports on all of them. Port 1 sends messages that allow you to play the keyboard keys. Port 2 allows you to use the controller knobs and sliders. In midi setup always enable both ports 1 and 2 for every midi keyboard controller you have. You will never have a problem if you do this.

I have done everything I can think of and I can not seem to get this to work. I have been working with Cakewalk the last 2 days, but I have had NO luck. I have this EXACT SAME issue. I have changed the ports to every possible setting and nothing works. I can see the midi data active in the widget. I can use other controller messages from the keyboard. But the notes do NOT work. Please help.

Here's some things to check. - Do you see MIDI activity on that channels meter? If you don't that's one problem to resolve. Change the 'input' port to your keyboard - I would suggest selecting 'Omni' from the input drop down list. Assuming you have input.........
- Check where it is outputting to. Is it going to a soft synth or a hardware synth? It needs to go somewhere. If it's a soft synth you should have an audio track that the synth outputs to. Is that receiving a signal? You can check that because the meters on that channel should also register a signal. If it's a hardware synth is it switched on and plugged into an amp/speakers so you can hear it's output?
- Check that the output has a channel number assigned to it and that you have chosen a bank and/or patch to play back.
- Finally check that wherever you are routing your signal to has you soundcard/interface selected in it's output. i.e If you are using a soft synth the audio output track for that synth needs to eventually get to your soundcard main outs. So for example the routing may be via your "Master buss", so check that.
Typical signal path might be YOUR KEYBOARD->SYNTH MIDI TRACK->SYNTH AUDIO OUT->SONAR MASTER BUSS->YOUR SOUNDCARD MAIN OUTS Post up you findings on the above and we can help further.
