As of this morning my ISPs automated status line says there are no issues whereas yesterday the status was "some Verizon customers in the southern Califonia are will experience loss of internet. Verizon engineers are working on the issue" I've been on for 30 minutes so far and not one drop. As of last night if we held a connection for more than 10 minutes The Lovely Lady and I would toast the event with Champagne. Wait.... that did not come out right.

Hi, From an internet support guy ... ... me! Take a reading from anywhere for pings to ... cakewalk.com ... doesn't matter where. Take same reading from 2nd computer. Make sure you keep track of this well. Disconnect one computer (laptop not a part of the network might make it easier) and connect it directly to the modem (not the router!!!!!) Take the same reading. IF -- the reading directly to the modem is HIGHER, than your samples, you have a networking issue. IF -- the reading is the same, then you can assume that there is a line issue ... and you want to go to the modem tools and get some information from the line. You want upstream and down stream information, and then the Signal to Noise levels for upstream and downstream. Modem is usually 192.168.100.1 or thereabouts ... you can check it online. These are for a cable connection more or less: RX Power 10 to -10dBmV ok. Higher or lower requires Tech Call usually. Down SNR 32dB or higher // Lower levels require a Tech Call Upstream SNR 26dB or higher // Lower levels require a Tech Call (problem with the return path) TX Power 35 to 53dBmV Higher or lower requires a Tech Call Low RX Power often indicates a splitter. Hope this helps! Of course, if you are downloading all that Mooch porn on the other computer upstairs ... that could be the problem. One last issue ... DSL has been famous for its "loop" on the modem setup (127.0.0.1) which is one way that they can measure your connection to find out how much usage you have (that is sooooo old school!) ... and in Seattle, when we had NWLink, they charged for the extra usage or if it was too much, requested the customer to upgrade to a commercial account ... which usually has more bandwidth and allows for more to be done with it. Residential accounts have less latitude and in general, if MORE than 60% of your account is used 8 to 5, you will have a problem with the connection and there is a possibility that they are doing it on purpose to cause you to upgrade your account!

Thanks Pedro, but as you can see from my above post (#91) it appears the telco has resolved the problem. Over an hour without one dropout and the longest it's been up in six days. If it's up for more than four hours we will call the doctor though.

Hi, Just making sure you know how to grab enough information so you can tell where the problem is ... there are some good spots on teh net like dslreports.com that can help, but you probably already know that.

Yeah, it's been a go since yesterday morning. I had the telco (Verizon) put it a proper demac for me so now if need be I can just plug in a POT* at the demarc and test "before the house". The cool thing is the demarc jack is the type that disconnects the house lines when you insert the POT jack. Coolio? *POT=Plain Old Telephone (for those that know the lingo)

Mooch4056 ok Bapsi try this - Connect hub 3 to the laptop. Connect the land line to the Lovely Lady as she stands on one foot and hums a CHB song. Connect that wire to hub two. Connect hub two to the main computer. And the WEP thing. Run that line to the attic and connect it to hub 1. Shut on and off the circuit breaker. At this time its important that the Lovey Lady switch to humming a different CHB song. When she get half way through the song reboot the laptop into safe mode. Run over to the Lovley Lady and stomp your right foot 3 times and clap after beats. Then calmly walk over to your laptop and reboot out of safe mode and start up windows normally. I can't tell you how many times I have been through this and have gotton it to work!! Actually this is how I solved it. I just did not want Mooch to have the satisfaction of knowing it.
