[SOLVED] OK, serious home networking question
Why can't I get my laptop to see my DAW and vice-versa? I used to have a W2K domain controller but abandoned that about a year ago. I have XP Pro on both machines. They have fixed IP addresses (i.e. 192.168.1.x). They are hardwired. I have run the "Setup a home or small office network" wizard on both machines to no avail. Both computers show up under MSHOME (default name chosen) but I'm told the other machine is inaccessible. Anyone have a link or tips on how to set this up? Solution: Edit hosts file with IP to machine name mapping on both machines.

and file and print sharing has to be checked in the firewall exceptions dialog box

I'm not sure if that's entirely true, but since I assign STATIC IP's, for other reasons, it required me to edit my <Windows>\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file in order to make it work.

For Windows 7
- Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot% \system32\drivers\etc, and then click OK.

In a private home network situation even though the router and Pcs are set to DHCP, the lease rarely ever expires and ur pc keeps the IP the router/gateway/modem assigns to it. You can hardcode the IPs if your using a reverse DNS to access ur private IP from the outside wotld, if you have a home security camera system, etc. Dynamic IPs come into play in large networks with mobile and non nailed down network devices.
