SOLVED: PC optimization...some plugins won't work

Yesterday I went through a list to things to do to optimize my PC for Windows 7.  I got the list from Sweetwater.   Most of it I had already done.  There were only a couple of things I needed to do.

Anyway, when I was done and opened Sonar, the plugins I had in iLok wouldn't work.   In fact, my iLok account won't work.   Not sure what I did that would cause that.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Greg

Did you create a System Restore Point prior to your making the last set of tweaks?

If so, can't you perform a System Restore to that point, and then perhaps discuss whatever tweaks you had done, to make sure they are reasonable tweaks to make?

If a System Restore isn't possible, then you would presumably need to manually reverse whatever tweaks you did, to get yourself back to where your iLOK authorizations are working again.

Can you please list the tweaks you applied?

Well, the advice here http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/pc-optimization-guide-for-windows-7/ includes disabling startup items indiscriminately, so the first thing I would do is undo that. It looks like ilok requires a service "pace" to run, and if you are keeping that from loading under msconfig that might be your problem. Unless you are having problems, optimizing is not a good idea, even if you think you know what you are doing.

I completely concur - though I HAVE gone into my system configuration and changed some devices to disable them, and power management options, as well as core-parking, but that is the extent of what I have done since Windows 7 - I am now on Windows 10, with the Anniversary Update applied.

A LOT of information for tweaking is for Windows XP, and Windows 7.  Much of it does not need to be done anymore, with the exception of the above settings changes I made, and splitting file groups across multiple data drives.

But yeah - I would take it back to a pristine Windows 7 environment, fully patch current, and THEN take a look at what things make sense for your CURRENT OS version, to be very judicious in choosing to make performance modifications, as internal processing and hardware technology advances rather rapidly, so some things become poor choices, and other choices arise.

Have you updated License Manager recently? I'd do this first if you haven't done this in the near past. I had to do this and then I believe I assigned it a delayed start to be able to run it. There is a pretty thorough explanation when you get to the iLok site with the issue. Also:

Yeah, I'll have to figure out how to undo what I did.  Most of it would be easy to undo.   But under "msconfig" there were things checked and some things unchecked before I began.   I wouldn't know which things were and were not checked.

But most other stuff would be an easy fix.

    Thanks!

Is there something in Control Panel that allows me to reset Windows 7 to normal?

I had this same problem last night.  I wonder if it's related to the recent melt-down ilok had.  I went to their webpage and downloaded and installed the most recent update which seemed to fix everything.

I have a feeling it's what I did.   Immediately after I did it I opened a project, and it said a plugin I was using was not working.   That's when I checked my plugins in iLok and found the problem.

    Thanks!

If License Manager won't work, then you should probably try a fresh install from the website like Jude77 did.

The issue is that you won't "work around" LM; if it doesn't run, nothing on your iLok will either. At one point, iLok ran like a straight, self-contained  TSR (though I doubt it was ever truly that either). It's been quite a while since it ran that way.

    Good luck.

I wouldn't know which things were and were not checked.

its easy, almost anything in the list is searchable through google. it will tell you exactly what it is and what its for.

I found out how to set Windows 7 back to default, so I'll do that in the morning.   I tried to look for iLok to uninstall so I could re-install it, but it's not showing up.   Hopefully, correcting Windows 7 will fix it.

Why is it you think that to reinstall, one must uninstall first? Most apps for which that is necessary take care of it by themselves upon the reinstall.

UPDATE:   I did not do a system restore.   Instead, I went in and saw that some Intel things were disabled.  I enabled them, opened iLok, now everything works fine.
