[SOLVED] - Preferences no longer saving my control surface settings

I've been using a Roland VS-100 as my control surface for about a year or so, and never have any problems unless I forget to turn ON the master switch for the external hardware. In that case I have to go in and reset the parameters for the controller under preferences.

All of a sudden Sonar doesn't remember the settings. Upon opening up any project, the VS-100 doesn't "control". I have to go into preferences and reset the parameters for the Surface Controller (i.e. Controller/Surface = VS-100-1, In Port=Control (VS-100), and Out Port = Control (VS-100)) and it'll work just fine. If I close/reopen Sonar, the controller no longer works and I have to go in again reset the preferences.

I've tried re-booting the computer, totally removing the VS-100-1 settings and then adding it in again. No joy.

Any ideas?

Walt

Did you move it into a different USB slot?

No hardware changes for Sonar or the VS-100, although I did try out a new controller software for my Integra 7 and added Acou6tic software. Tomorrow I'll try a system restore to see if that helps.

Spent a couple hours trying to sort this out. Restoring the system to an earlier date did not solve the problem. What gave me a clue as to the root cause of the problem was when I disconnected the VS100 from the computer and deleted the VS-100-1 Control Surface settings. I then connected another Control Surface, (a small keyboard with ACT capabilities). After entering all the info, clicking "apply", closing the preferences, saving the file, I closed Sonar and then reopened. Interestingly, when I opened up preferences, the Control Surface was still showing the VS-100-1. This told me that the file that stored the Control Surface settings was derelict in its duties.

I found the file (ctrlsurface.dat) renamed it and then copied the same file from my previous version of Sonar (X2) hoping that it would be the compatible with X3. (I was still using the VS100-1 back then too). I inserted in the folder where ctrlsurface.dat is stored, opened up Sonar and voila, it is all better.

Thanks WallyG- I've saved a copy of that file for the next time Platinum forgets what my surface controllers are- which happens from time to time.
For others- the file is located at c:/Users/your user name/AppData/Roaming/Cakewalk/SONAR Platinum
