(SOLVED!) Sonar X1 projects won't load in X2 (also, won't load Garritan Plug-in)
I've attempted to load a couple of my most recent Sonar X1 projects with the new X2 software. One of the projects just freezes ("not responding" message) and refuses to load at all. The other project will load eventually, but all of my purchased plug-ins, such as the World Instruments expansion and my Garritan Personal Orchestra plug-in, can't be found. I've added the Garritan plug-in to the VST list in the options menu, but I still can't get the one project to load at all. I'm not even sure how to tell the program to find my World Instruments expansion. Has anyone else run into these issues? Help me :) UPDATE: I've solved this issue. See post at or near bottom of thread if you want to know what the problem was.

Nope, X2 copied all this information from the X1 setups for me..all my VST are right in view in x2.. but then again, i use the default locations for everything i install on my music computer..

If you mean Digital Sound Factory World Instrument expansion for Dimension Pro, and if you are getting "...sfz" file not found, that is because your new Dimension Pro installation moved its multisamples location. If so, you need to find out where it went and move the expansion files to the same spot. Along the way, you could find out if other Dim Pro multisamples were orphaned in the same way as the expansion files.

Regarding the project that won't open: Try holding shift while opening it. This will enable "Safe Mode" - First, say "Yes to All." This will load the project in a basic way, ensuring no windows are automatically opened. If that works, just resave the project and you should be good. If that fails, try the same thing again but say "No to all." This will load the project with no plug-ins. If that works, the culprit is a specific plug-in used in the project. That'll get you on the right track on where to focus your attention. Regarding the other issue: Are these plug-ins still working in X1? If so, open X2 and X1 side-by-side and make sure your VST Preferences match.

Then I tried "No to All" and it opened fine. The only plug-in that I'm using in that project is Garritan Personal Orchestra, so I know that is the culprit. Another strange thing is that I can open a new project and Insert the Garritan Personal Orchestra Multi-VST plug-in, but all MIDI coming from it is of very poor quality and has a strange clicking/static sound. All of the plug-ins still work fine in X1. I think I just need to know where to find my World Instruments expansion for Dimension Pro, and how to tell X2 to look for it. I've looked everywhere but can't seem to locate where my computer saved it, or where X1 is looking for it when it finds it. Any additional advice would be great! :)

Is it possible that you changed a map name or used a different map in x1 for dim Pro? My dim pro is in c:/programfiles/cakewalk. In preferences you should find where your computer saves them. Danny

It's great that you were able to zero in on the core problem a bit. If it's just that one project, it may make sense to just open in Safe Mode, re-insert GPO, and resave. That might be less work than hunting down some inconsistency. For the Dimension Pro expansion pack issue: I'm surprised it works in X1, but not X2. I can't think of where to look without seeing your system or getting "live" feedback. You may want to consider dropping a line to our tech support team. Thanks!

I really appreciate your input. But I'm still running into an issue with GPO running as it should. I started in Safe Mode without the plug-in, manually reinserted GPO, but it's still giving me that strange, pulsating static sound. Why would it work fine in X1 but not X2? Both DAWs are accessing the same plug-in. Any ideas on this one? I'll try to fix this problem and then deal with the Dimension Pro issue after. One problem at a time.

Yes. Divide and conquer :). If you're using GPO primarily, it may be an issue across-the-board? If so, it may even be an audio issue. I can't stress enough how important it is to confirm matched settings between X1/X2. Particularly stuff in the Audio section, like Driver Mode. You may also want to try "Reset Config to Defaults" in the Configuration File section.

I can't stress enough how important it is to confirm matched settings between X1/X2. Particularly stuff in the Audio section, like Driver Mode. You may also want to try "Reset Config to Defaults" in the Configuration File section. Okay, so I found a couple of inconsistencies between the setting on X1 and X2. The Driver Mode on X1 was set to MME (32-bit), but X2 was set to WDM/KS. So I changed X2 to match X1. Then I checked the VST Scan Folder(s) under VST Settings. I saw that X1 was scanning -c:\program files (x86)\cakewalk\vstplugins and -c:\program files\vstplugins\garritan But, X2 was set to scan -c:\program files\cakewalk\vstplugins [not (x86)] and -c:\program files\vstplugins\garritan I changed X2 to match X1. I also "reset config to defaults" and rescanned vstplugins. This has at least fixed the audio issue (weird static) I was getting when using GPO. I still can't load my original work file unless it's in Safe Mode though. I will try to load it in Safe Mode, reinsert the GPO plug-in, reassign my tracks to it and see if I can continue my project from there. I haven't tried to look at other older projects of mine that I used GPO with yet, but if this is a consistent issue, I hope we can figure out some way to fix it. It's quite a lot of work to have to reassign all of the tracks (and remix) to a reinserted GPO plug-in. Thanks for helping me this far! I'm really happy that at least I'll be able to use GPO in new projects. I'm excited to actually use X2 now :) Now, onto the World Instruments expansion. How in the world do I go about finding where that is saved!

Good. Progress! The re-insert/rebuild solution was only realistic if it was just that one project. I understand it's a lot of work. In the VST Preferences, there's a button labeled "Reset All VST Plug-ins." Try pushing that and re-scanning again.

Another thing. Since you have a 64bit VST path in X2 and 32bit path in X1, it seems to me that you may be running X1 in 32bit. Try installing and running SONAR X2 32bit. Let us know if you still see the problems in that case.

Also, update on the "missing" World Instruments expansion. My apologies. They weren't missing at all. The error I was getting was concerning the "Cakewalk Studioverb" plugin. Has this not been included in X2? The reason I thought it was my expansion missing is because in the project that I was loading I exclusively used instruments from the World Instruments expansion. I saw all of those instruments' names come up saying something was missing and missed that it was actually the "Studioverb" plugin.

For your expansion pack problem, it would not be entirely surprising if your X2 installation failed to find and use the same multisamples folder you used in your X1 installation. So if you reinstalled Dim Pro as part of installing X2, all the included multisamples might be duplicated, possibly into the default multisamples folder, unless you selected yet another multisamples location. Meanwhile, your expansion packages are still in your original installation's multisample location. There's a good chance this would make your expansion packs unavailable in X1, too, because Dim Pro looks globally into just one multisamples location.

Yes. When you run the installer you get the option between 32 and 64bit. You can have both installed simultaneously. I think we've figured out something important, as Studioverb is not available in the 64bit version (if I recall correctly).

So audio channels aren't as important as MIDI to me. Eventually I'd like to start recording audio, but by that time I'll likely just invest in a desktop computer that I'll customize for music recording. Budget can be up to about $300 or so. Any ideas?

It is generally a bad idea to include the 32 bit scan path in the x64 version of SONAR. What this will do is include all the 32 bit plugins AND the 64 bit versions unnecessarily cluttering up the plugin menus and taking longer to scan. Also you will get redundant entries in the menus. If you have a 64 bit version of a plugin its is far more preferable to use that rather than the 32 bit version since that requiires bridging. If you only have a 32 bit version of a specific plugin you could add just that one plugin to a specific folder and then add only that folder to the scan path for X64. That way you aren't including all the redundant 32 bit plugins.

A better audio interface would open up new possibilities for you, but that's not your problem. You will probably find that your old projects open OK in 32-bit X2. There should be no problem installing it alongside the 64-bit version. There is no problem running X1 alongside X2, either, so a viable option is to finish up current projects in X1 and then shift to X2 for new projects. That's actually a standard strategy, especially among professionals who can't risk interruptions when paying clients are there.

After stopping for the night, I saved one last time, and closed the program. Just to test, I opened it back up and I got the same "not responding" symptom that I was getting when trying to open my X1 project in X2. I CTRL+ALT+DEL the program closed and tried again. This time it opened just fine. Now it's the morning and I keep on trying to open my project but it will not open. I've tried ten times! This project is something I'm working on for my school's culture festival and I have to be able to access my work. What in the world would be causing my projects to intermittently (though more often than not) not open?? Please help! Thank you.

It appears that when I try to open my projects that use GPO, they won't load until after I use CTRL+ALT+DEL to close Sonar X2. After I close the program, I get the graphic on screen of the GPO plug-in instruments loading. It's as if Sonar X2 being open is getting in the way of the GPO instruments loading. An aside: I was able to get my project open on a fluke this morning. I kept it open all day and worked on it throughout the day so that I wouldn't risk not being able to open it again. I finished that composition and exported the audio (SAFE!), but still have four more compositions to get done within the next few days. I'm really worried that I won't be able to reopen up my projects once I get them started. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this may be happening, or why I can only very rarely manage to get everything open and loaded? Thanks for all of your help everyone!

I hope you get it sorted Bibs Thanks for the reply. I actually didn't have the latest version installed. But, I downloaded and installed it and am still having the same issues. It's so frustrating that I can't use this program. I wish I could figure out why it seems like I'm only the only one that's having these issues :(

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! So, this might seem obvious to the professionals, but it took me forever to figure out. It turns out that when X2 what scanning for VST-plugins, it was looking in both the x64 and the x86 folders (so, both 64-bit and 32-bit folders). Now, this in and of itself isn't a problem per se - in fact, I still need it to scan a 32-bit folder in order to find my Cakewalk Sound Center World Instruments expansion - but it was trying to find, and possibly run, both the 32 and 64-bit version of GPO at the same time. For some reason I was able to get it to open even while it was doing this a couple of times (seriously, two times out of a hundred attempts), but this is obviously not the way it's supposed to function. Anyway, thanks for all the advice on here. I definitely learned a little bit about how X2 works from this whole fiasco. Most importantly, now I can composer with a little peace of mind again :)
