[SOLVED] Sound Engine problems with Fast Track Ultra

Brand new X1a install (on a brand new machine)  I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but hoping someone can help.  Is anyone else using an M-Audio Fast Tracks Ultra USB interface?

Issue
This is easy to reproduce on my system...
1) Start Sonar X1a
2) Add an audio track (or use the one that is there - no black track template in X1a?)
3) Set the input to "M-Audio Fast Track Ultra (4 in, 4 out)", "Left Fast Track Ultra In 1/2"
(Love the naming standard.  Becomes "LftFsTUI12".  Must figure out how to change it)
4) Set Input Echo to ON
5) Play guitar connected to this input
==> Guitar now sounds like a Darlek from Doctor Who (no FX added)

Strangely...
1) Add NI Kontakt on a simple instrument track
2) Load piano patch and set MIDI input
3) Play keyboard
==> Keyboard sounds ok, but a slight crackle like an old vinyl record

Except...
==> After 20 seconds or so, piano now sounds like a Darlek also
1) Stop and start audio engine from the transport bar
=> Piano comes back for another 20 seconds or so; guitar still messed up

It seems to be an input issue, but it happens with the demo songs in playback too.

Troubleshooting
Sadly, Reaper, with the same ASIO config etc just keeps on trucking with no crackle or audio issues at all.  (Best $60 tool for troubleshooting Sonar ever!)

I'm running DPC Latency Checker and it is cruising along in the green around 110 us.

Setting the buffer up from 256 to 1024 samples doesn't seem to help

Config
- Sonar X1a (no ASIO patch applied as the interface shows up fine)
- M-Audio Fast Track Ultra USB (driver 5.10.0.5099; firmware 1.51)
- Lenovo Thinkpad W510 (all power saving off)
- Windows 7 Pro 64Bit
- Komplete 7
- Audio settings: 24Bit/96K Reported 2.7ms latency (tried different buffer)

Note that my sig defnes my studio machine.  On the road I have a setup close to yours on my laptop (Win7 64, X1a, USB M-Audio UFT).   The only noticeable difference between my road (laptop) set and yours is that I run 24/48.  I have a latency of 5.8ms and a 256 buffer.  I am running ASIO drivers 5.10.00.5133.   To date, I have not experienced what you described...well, not exactly.  On two occasions I did have to reset my audio engine due to some odd sounding audio.  I discovered it was my second drive (audio) on my lap (going to sleep) that was causing the problem.  If it means anything, my laptop runs a an 8400 with 4gig of memory.  I also travel with an Oxygen-25 controller (USB).   Other than those two odd(garbled) audio instances, I have not had much problems - other than between my ears.  :)

The naming is under the Prefernces (P key) you can set the Inputs and outputs to use Friendly names.

I can elaborate if needed.

Thanks for the reply Katherine.

Can you tell me where you got your drivers from?  Are they are beta version?  5.10.00.5099 is the last I can see on the M-Audio website, but I would like to try 5.10.00.5133 as this is a show-stopper for me at the moment.

Yeah - thanks, but I'm not sure how it translates to the super-squished version in the mixer.  Not really a priority for me at the moment though since the audio engine is stuffed and I can't actually use X1 for more than a few seconds :(

Zilch:
I need to apologize and clarify.   I do indeed have the same drivers for my Ultra.   But, I also have a Fast Track, and it uses the 5133.   However, in either case, I do not experience the problems you experience.  But, as I stated, I am running at 24/48 on both the Ultra and the FT.  As I replied to your post, I went to the device manager to see my driver #s and I had the FT Plugged in at the time.   I am sorry for getting your hopes up and unnecessarily causing you to look for the 5133 drivers.

Ha.  No worries.  Thanks for taking the time to clear that up on NYE.

Turns out I have solved it, and it was a case of me being rather thick.*  For some reason X1a had become set to WDM rather than ASIO.  Setting back to ASIO I haven't had any more issues as yet.  Strangely the place you set it to ASIO is below the page with the rest of the settings and I didn't get that far down)

(*Not that it shouldn't work under WDM, but I'll get off Cakewalk's (and M-Audio's) case, as I'm sure they have issues to fix that people actually care about).
