[SOLVED] X1c introduces audio playback crackles to my setup

So far I have been on the lucky side with Sonar problems running X1 Producer. Now I get trouble with X1c. My setup: Intel i5 Notebook running Windows7/64 Soundcard: Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 (USB2) After installing x1c I suddenly get crackles all over the place when I rfecord audio. No problem during recording, only on playback. - first I tried the usual: adjusting buffer sizes / latency etc. No change at all. - then I did a complete uninstall of Sonar and installed the original X1(a) without any updates: everything back to normal: no crackles at all even with low latency settings. - installed X1c (without any intermediate updates): crackles like hell again. Up to now I look at it with a smile, thinking by myself that I took over some of the bad luck of Bub and others, to give them some relief - after all we know that the sum of X1 bad luck has to stay the same ;-) But I would really like to see X1c working without a permanent vinyl crackle factor, if only to have separate snap grid values working. Any idea appreciated. By the way: can I roll back fast from X1c to the original install without uninstalling amd beginning reinstall from scratch? P.S. No idea why I suddenly have no html editing in my post but plain text in a row. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi,i'm sorry for your problem.I use a Focusrite 26 i\o with no problems with X1c.Can you try this: Switch to wdm drivers, with high latency. Exit and delete AUD.ini file. Reopen Sonar and let it rescan your device. Choose asio driver with your favorite latency. Close all and restart pc. Many times with Sonar update i have noticed that need restart Windows after the update.... I hope that help. Good luck!! Roby

And one more thing: I get the cracks and pops both with wdm and with asio driver setups.

Looks like I have no chane but return to x1b for the moment. Returning to X1b: is there any cumulative update after x1a, or do I have to install all minor ones?

The Quickfixes are cumulative, so you install Sonar, then X1a, then X1b, then the last quick fix.

Great: second complete reinstall of X1a didn't work any more as solution: now I have crackles no matter what X1 version I use. No problem recording audio in Wavelab with the same setup. At least it is clear now, that I have to find a solution with X1c, since rollback doesn't help any more.

Jim,  I have done everything you have listed + remove motherboard periferals such as bluetooth, Wifi, onboard sound, etc..  It's most likely not you.  Unfortunately it's X1(x)!  I also run FL producer 10, Reason/Record, Protools without issue on the same rig.  Maybe they'll get rid of rice crispies before X2 :(  For the cost of this program and some of the features it is supposed to have I am starting to have buyers remorse.

Hey Jim, just to clarify, were you having the crackles before you installed X1c the first time?

No, before I hadn't. But even that is no proof of anything in a complex system with ongoing windows updates and other changes (no soundcard driver change in this case). Fact is, I can't record audio within X1 on my dedicated music notebook any more now, no matter which version I try. I can record audio with the same soundcard and other software, though, and I certainly won't reinstall a well working Windows7 for bughunting one single program. I'm willing to try other serious bug hunting for a limited time, but without solution I would be forced to switch to another DAW within a few weeks, despite liking X1 so much and having adapted my worklflow to it.

After six hours of uninstalling and reinstalling software and drivers and checking every possible change in my system before installing X1c, I finally got on track of the source of trouble: I'm using a Korg Kronos since short, and my first recording with it into Sonar X1c was done with it's USB midi connection. This driver running at the same time with the Focusrite Saffire USB causes the crackles. Changing the Kronos midi connection to standard midi in/out connected via an Edirol usb midi interface into the Notebook solved the problem. Why a midi connection like the Kronos USB should cause this kind of audio trouble is beyond me and was hard to spot as trouble source. X1c had nothing to do with it directly! It just happened to be the only environment where the midi and audio driver issues collided in a way that caused real trouble.

Kronos is a workstation correct? I'm wondering because a lot of workstations are sending a MIDI clock pulse all the time from their built in arpegiators  and sequencers if that might be a problem I had a similar issue with my MOTIF way back with SONAR 4 and the Yamaha MIDI driver.

    Anyway, glad it's solved.

Yes, Kronos is a workstation. Since the midi driver is a first step to support a full editor connecting the Kronos audio engine as well, my suspicion is that it was undocumented half-developed audio functionality within the driver that might have caused this kind of trouble. Just a suspicion: I will never know.

This is the problem with complex systems using components from multiple vendors; often, the problems make no obvious sense at all.

I had murderous crackle out of nowhere about a week ago, across all projects. Turned out to be coming from BFD, and I've still not really figured out why it happened, or indeed why it stopped happening. I poked a few things and changed a few settings, mostly at random, and it went away. I doubt I'll ever really get to the bottom of it.
