[SOLVED - with additional info] Is There a Way to Specify/Change Start Screen Thumbnails?
Hello All, Is there a way to change a custom template's Start Screen thumbnail to a different graphic, rather than the SONAR generated name based graphic? I tried what was described in http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3415475 , but that seems to have no effect. Thanks! Pete

Did you make sure to go and re-save the template after doing the image?

Yes I did. And because I wasn't totally clear on how to open in order to resave, I tried a couple of different things ... open the template as a template as if to edit (and resave), open a new project based on that template (and resave it as template) ... but nothing changed the Start Screen thumbnail.

That is odd, I never even knew about this and just tried it twice successfully. There's only so many steps which I did mess up on the first go around. Just to be sure did you also make to save the image as <TemplateName>.cwt.png and save it in the templates folder?

Inside my C:Cakewalk Content\Sonar Platinum\Project Templates folder I have a template called "+ AcGtr, Bss, Dr, Pno.cwt", and immediately under it resides "+ AcGtr, Bss, Dr, Pno.cwt.png". I just pasted those names into this post by copying and pasting the actual file names. During troubleshooting, I actually started with simpler names without commas and I believe also without the leading "+" (for "vies by name" sorting reasons). Maybe I should try it again without the leading "+"?
Hey, and if you felt like posting the steps in your own words, that may be helpful as well, though there isn't really much to misinterpret in that original post.

I just tried saving the template as "Pete.cwt", and the graphic as "Pete.cwt.png", opened up the template, "saved as" "PeteResaved.cwt", closed the template, launched the start screen from the File Menu, and no dice - the graphic's not in the start screen. During earlier troubleshooting I just saved instead of "save as" with no luck.

I just tried it again, opening "Pete.cwt" and saving as "Pete.cwt". It asked me if I want to overwrite, I said yes, and it saved. Closed the template, opened the Start Screen, still no graphic. ???? I must be cursed!!!!

Maybe you have a minor problem with your install

So here's something interesting ... I just switched my Windows Explorer view to large icons ... and the template does have the graphic I made displayed. Was the original post I linked to not about having the graphic appear in the Start Screen (after clicking the "New From Template" tab? Did I misunderstand something?
Or is there some Windows setting that could be interfering with SONAR seeing the imbedded graphic??? Seems very strange ...

A good strategy it is ... as is checking power first. Unfortunately, the restart didn't change anything, the graphic thumbnail still does not display for the template in the Start Screen. TranceCanada
Maybe you have a minor problem with your install
How would one go about determining that? Personally, I would think that an issue with the install would have manifested itself in other more complex ways as well ... and everything other than this is working fine for me. But of course, any suggestions are most welcome.

OK, I've finally got it. Changing the graphic to 96x96 pixels and trying the same thing again worked. If you look at the thread I linked in the first post, there was talk about the graphic actually being 172x172. I checked this myself, and it was indeed displayed at that size, so I used that size for my custom graphic. But NO!  Apparently that's not the way it works. Once I changed the graphic to 96x96, it shows up in the Start Screen fine. I don't know if it can handle anything larger than that, as I haven't tried it, but I may. Thanks to everyone who thought about this and offered suggestions! I appreciate it! Pete

Total shot in the dark here as it could be completely unrelated, but you could try clearing your thumbnail cache with Windows Disk Cleanup Utility.  You could also try searching your computer for the file(s) in question to where there are copies.

Here's the answer about maximum size of the Start Screen thumbnail - 131x131. As soon as you hit 132x132 it stops displaying in the Start Screen and reverts to a "default" graphic. Hopefully this has saved some headaches for other people!

Man, is NOTHING simple and straightforward???
So I thought I had it all figured out in the above post. But ... when I just tried a 131x131 graphic on a different template ... it did not work! Turns out that this time the maximum was 106x106.
It seems pretty clear to me it depends on something more than just dimensions. It may be file size. In both cases (the template discussed in the above thread, and the different template I was working on now) what worked was either well under to just under 48K file size, and the sizes when both graphic files were no longer seen in the Smart Screen was just over 48K (e.g. 48.3K). Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.
I think I've had enough for today. If anyone concludes anything more conclusive, please to post here!
