SONAR 2017.03 Update Now Available!

This month’s release for SONAR Platinum, Professional, and Artist brings new features to the Piano Roll view and introduces MIDI Bluetooth Support using the new UWP MIDI Engine. This release also contains additional fixes & enhancements to many key elements of SONAR.

New Features

Piano Roll View Enhancements
Cakewalk reaches back to its MIDI sequencing roots to optimize SONAR’s core MIDI editing for today’s generation of virtual instruments. The SONAR 2017.03 update addresses modern MIDI music production needs through a redesign of the Piano Roll View (PRV) Track Pane and the Controller Pane. From efficient, simple controller editing to clean and focused MIDI track selection, SONAR has transformed MIDI editing from tedious to transparent.

You can now click any MIDI track to bring that data into focus, while Auto Lock prevents you from accidentally editing MIDI data from other tracks. Color-coding relates tracks to data for easy identification in complex projects. The re-designed Track Pane displays twice as many tracks in the same amount of space as before, and now allows you to take advantage of SONAR’s unique Smart Swipe feature that lets you select, mute, solo, or arm multiple tracks with a single, quick gesture.

UWP MIDI Engine & Bluetooth MIDI Support
Microsoft have introduced a new API standard for using MIDI on Windows as part of the Universal Windows Platform architecture. With this comes many new advantages including Bluetooth MIDI support and Multi-Client access to MIDI ports. UWP MIDI provides a modern way to communicate with MIDI devices and can be extended to support newer MIDI protocols/interfaces. To enable this in SONAR go to, Preferences | MIDI | Playback and Recording and set the MIDI driver mode to UWP

Fixes and Enhancements

  • Double-clicking a track could fail to maximize strip height in some situations
  • Track view no longer flickers when reordering tracks in large projects
  • Adjusting Take lanes height longer allows the Edit Filter to overlap other controls
  • Excluded synths no longer show in Instruments plug-in lists
  • SONAR no longer disappears behind other programs when switching Lenses
  • Help will now correctly launch from Preferences | MIDI | Playback & Recording
  • Exporting as Raw Tracks - No Automation/FX now preserves the Comp on an audio track
  • New updates to SONAR no longer revert the theme to Tungsten after installing
  • Fixed a possible crash when dragging a MIDI clip to Matrix in localized versions of SONAR
  • The power indicator for a FX Bin will now stay in sync with the Frozen/Unfrozen state of a track
  • VST3 plug-ins now display correctly in the registered Plug-ins list in Plug-in Manager
  • Aim Assist now displays correctly when using the arrow keys to scroll in the PRV
  • The mouse position no longer displays only in the PRV when Aim Assist is turned off

Yes!

Appreciating the new enhancements!

Even the new shading in the PRV is helpful. Amazing how much little things can help!

Thanks Bakers! ...and extra thanks for keeping the note names in PRV too!

Very excited to have a PRV update!

Probably a stupid question, but in the new PRV is there a way to display all notes of all tracks other than yellow-highlighting the little pencil/track number box?

In doing it the 'yellow highlight all' way, when I select a different MIDI track via clicking on a note in the PRV, it doesn't automatically select/jump to/highlight that track in the track pane or the main track window... which is VERY handy in a large template.

Am I just missing something in a setting?

Hey Scott,

You can double click on the track number to set all tracks as visible in the PRV. As far as clicking notes in the PRV, You might be running into a known issue that came up right before release. If you select all tracks using the double click behavior in the new Track pane, click notes from another track no longer moves the focus to that track. For now if you click the tracks name all tracks will stay visible and it will shift the focus to the track of your choice. We should have this fixed in the next update. Glad you are enjoying the newest changes and we hope to have more PRV enhancements in the future.

Thanks Lance!

Just to be clear, is double clicking the track number the only way to view all notes, and therefore clicking notes on another track will never change the track focus in the PRV (for now)?

If so I'll have to roll back to the previous version unfortunately, as I'm running over 200 MIDI tracks in my template so it's just not workable this way... but otherwise I really like the new PRV layout so I'm glad it's being worked on - looking forward to being able to update to the new version!

I don't know if it was in this release or one of the previous releases, but Sonar no longer blocks my audio from other programs when it is running. Previously, I would have to shut Sonar down to listen to a YouTube video.

VST3 instruments missing in latest update except Rapture Pro and Z3TA+2. C:\program files\common files\vst3 is in preferences, have pushed reset and rescan button (ticked rescan failed and existing plugins). I have also checked plugin manager.
Audio VST3 plugins are fine. Worked in previous update. Does anybody have this?

Lance,
If tracks are visible in the PRV those not in focus are greyed, is this intentional? For this update it says "Color-coding relates tracks to data for easy identification in complex projects".

Prior to this update the unfocused visible tracks retained the note color in a dimmed form, which I found particularly helpful! If greyed is intentional, is there any way that there could be a display option in the PRV, the option would be simply "dimmed" or "greyed", and I'd choose dimmed... I would hate to roll back just for this.

I had this on a previous update

The update defaulted my PLUGIN BROWSER to the category "Cakewalk plugins". Try checking this and choose a different category then hopefully all of your plugins will show

That is so true, and I realise that. It's just that I am a big user of the PRV and I'd rather that calm down first. If there were other fixes and enhancements in this release I would install right now.

Like I said... No rush

My VST 3 scanning issue is fixed and was perhaps caused by unnecessary extra file paths for scanning added upon upgrade. I have deleted all unnecessary VST file paths from registry and hope it not happens again. If not I will post next month.

I recommend installing the update...any "minor niggles" are IMHO teeny compared to the benefits the new PRV brings. You can always roll back if you want.

Whenever there's an update, there are typically three main issues:

  • Some kind of minor bug that early access and the beta didn't catch
  • People noticing things they hadn't noticed before that don't relate to the update
  • Something gets changed (e.g., a preference) that needs to be restored

The first one is the only one that may require a rollback, but even then, there has been only one update (I think it was November) where the update seemed sketchy enough that I waited for the next one. Every other time I just went and updated, and have never had to rollback. In my experience, the benefits of updates outweigh any drawbacks; the only time I get "snagged" was when the Read Cache preference was changed to off (don't know for sure it was the update, though) and I started getting dropouts on playback. I checked it and all was well again.

It sounds like you may be using the Auto Lock Mode but I'm not completely sure without seeing a screenshot. In Auto Lock mode tracks that are visible but not the focused track appear with grey notes. Turning Off Auto Lock will display notes from visible tracks in the normal color for that tracks data.

Lance,
For this update it says "Color-coding relates tracks to data for easy identification in complex projects".

There are 2 improvements with colors / visual feedback while using the PRV. One is that there is a dedicated color box on each track in the Track pane similar to Track view. This was previously part of the [Enable / Disable Editing] control but if the visibility was turned off for a track it was difficult to see what a tracks color was. The dedicated color box makes this much easier to differentiate tracks regardless if the track data is visible or not. The other visual improvements is that Gb, Ab, and Bb are shaded slightly differently from Db and Eb. This is only a subtle shading difference but makes looking across the PRV to the Piano Keys less necessary in some cases because differentiating the notes in the view is improved.

That issue was reported from Early Access and has been fixed in the Public Release for SONAR 2017.03. We typically don't include fixes from Early Access in the public announcement because these were not bugs in the previous public release. That issue was fixed between the last updated Early Access build and the public release so it didn't get any mention since we didn't update Early Access a 3rd time before going public but that crashes is resolved in the update.

Since no one is mentioning the issue of Sonar crashing when reopened with the PRV un-docked, am I correct in assuming that this has been fixed in the final 2017.03 update? There is no mention of it in the "fixes/enhancements".

Lance,

Thanks for the clarification. Makes sense and is what I suspected.

I use the PRV quite a bit especially with Steel Pedal Guitars softsynths where you absolutely need to draw in CCs to vary several parameters. CW has done an excellent job on the PRV with this update and will definitely improve my workflow!

Re: SONAR 2017.03 Update Now Available! 2017/03/29 19:25:23 (permalink)

The lock button is now missing in prv edit mode. I like to be able to see other sellected tracks for refference but without having them editable. This is one of the main reasons i choose Sonar as my DAW in the first place. The loss of this feature is a great set back to my composition work flow.
It looks like i will have to go back to using X2 Producer.
