SONAR 2017.09 Early Access Now Available!
This month’s release for SONAR Artist, Professional, and Platinum brings new features along with fixes & enhancements to many key elements of SONAR. In SONAR 2017.09 we have added a dedicated button for duplicating tracks to make the tracking and mixing workflow even faster. Speaking of workflow, we have been working with Microsoft on support for the new Surface Dial. This is great device for people who want the feel of a control surface without the wires. It's great on the go and requires no setup to have control Surface like support so you can keep focused on your music. New FeaturesNew Duplicate Track Button(Platinum, Professional, and Artist) Duplicating a track is a widely used technique for mixing to create thick vocals when you add compression and chorus to the double. It is also very handy during recording when you are creating different parts using the same instrument or audio setup. In SONAR 2017.09 update we have added a dedicated button for this in the Track view to make it even faster. So you can focus on the music you are making instead of how you are getting there. To set how you want the button to behave you can right-click on the Duplicate button and pick the settings you prefer. Microsoft Surface Dial Integration(Platinum, Professional, and Artist) Microsoft has released a new device for interacting with Windows 10 and it’s Apps. They call it the Surface Dial! It is apart of a new class of “Wheel” devices that are automatically configured for simple setup and powerful functionality. We are happy to announce that you can now use the new Surface Dial with SONAR along with any other Wheel device for Windows 10. All you need is a computer with Bluetooth support and you are ready. It features a built-in Smart Grid based Transport, Precision handling of controls in SONAR, and Project Zooming. It can also be configured by the user for a specific app to have a specific functionality from the Windows Wheel settings. The device can be used on the table as well as on the screen with supported devices such as Surface 5 & Surface Studio. Besides having dedicated functionality the Surface Dial also has custom hapic feedback configured specially for SONAR. Fixes and EnhancementsDuplicate (Clone) Track- All references to Clone Track have now been changed to Duplicate Track
- Duplicated simple instrument tracks will now create a new instance of the synth
- Duplicating instrument tracks previously caused issues in projects with folders
- Duplicated tracks with lanes did not indicate lanes until expanded

- ProChannel enable Post FX Rack button is now copied when duplicating a track
- Track gain is now copied when duplicating a track
- Duplicating a track within a folder could create a new track outside of the folder
- Duplicated tracks now respect the “Follow Track Pan setting
- Duplicated Track now remember if the inline Piano Roll is selected
- Duplicated tracks previously did not set the Read Automation button state correctly
Start Screen- Clicking the Discover tab banner previously opened the Start Screen in a browser
- Text for “Demo Projects” in the Start Screen is no longer cut off in some languages
Touch- Using touch to navigate, it was possible move the timeline beyond measure 1
Miscellaneous- Track Control Manager previously listed Sends as AUX
- The Open File dialog did not display some Cakewalk file types when set to “All Cakewalk” Projects, Templates, and Bundles will now all display with this selected

When I try to duplicate, the WAI locater and the Track number need to be highlighted to duplicate one specific track. If the WAI is on track one and I select another track by clicking on the track number multiple tracks are duplicated. This is an issue as more tracks are duplicated than I want to be duplicated. I will post a video to demonstrate shortly

I have it installed on my Surface, I tried to install on my main PC which has the screen capture software but it kept saying the file was corrupted. So I had to do cell phone video of the issue on the surface. https://youtu.be/RUNBLVqoeVE

Hmm. That's how track cloning has always worked, and seems correct to me (though probably just because I'm used to it). I can see how it's not necessarily intuitive.

To be more accurate, it's not the WAI indicator as such. It's more that highlighting the number and clicking elsewhere on the track are two types of track selection.

Interesting so there is no visual indicator that multiple tracks are selected? I've always Used shift click, alt-click or the new click and swipe to select multiple tracks and that made the track numbers light up to designate they were selected for editing. I still have the previous version installed on my PC I will test this If this is the case that will cause problems because its duplicating tracks I do not want to duplicate which means it may still take multiple clicks to verify only the track I want to duplicate is duplicated.

Ok I see what you are saying. If I have a track number of a track highlighted and right-click on a different track and use the clone track command it does, in fact, duplicate those two tracks. even if they have other tracks between them. I have always made sure the track I am working with is highlighted though so I never discovered this because I would be clicking on the highlighted track. Now with a button, even if the track I intend to duplicate is highlighted, Sonar may actually have focus on other tracks and duplicate them as well? The old Clone command, when selected, brings up a window that informs how many tracks and types of tracks are selected. I guess with this button caution is required. I'm always cloning tracks so I'm very excited about this button.

It's the early release, which sometimes still has a few things that need fixing. The proper release usually follows in a few days, and will show up in command centre as normal. If you want to try the early release, you can get it now by right clicking on Sonar in the command centre and selecting from the Rollback list.

Thanks Gang... Very happy to finally have the Inspector's pre/post status remembered in cloning. It's been a petty annoyance for a while... Note... Again the update is overwriting the factory templates so make sure you've renamed any that you've edited...

There is a difference between selected and focused. You can have focus on one track but have another selected. Focus is done by clicking in the tracks header. Selection is done by clicking in the tracks number box. In your video at 0:19 you set focus for track 1 (by clicking on its header) but you also have track 3 selected, thus it duplicates both. 1- Click CNTRL+SHIFT+A to deselect all tracks and focus. 2- Click a tracks number box in the header (without putting focus on any other tracks). 3- you should only have that 1 track duplicated. FYI- the dog barking scared the snot out of me.

This is one of those releases that might seem underwhelming at first to people who have the idea that a monthly update should always include some kind of big whizz-bang feature - and hey, maybe the duplicate track button is a whizz-bang feature for a few people, but for most of us it's a little thing, and maybe not the little thing that we might have chosen to focus on if we happen to have a different bee in our bonnet... BUT it's a little thing that's pretty much inarguably an improvement - they took something that probably gets used a fair bit but was previously a bit fumbly, even if most of us never thought about it, and thought about how to do it right, and made the change while fixing a few underlying related (and a few other unrelated) bugs. Plus, the surface dial thing, which I almost certainly won't use anytime soon but hey, future-proofing, awesome. That's actually a lot, and to have that happening every month, even if most months don't have a big whizz-bang feature, is pretty great, and something that users of something like Reaper have crowed about for ages. It's even better, I think, to have it in combination with an application as deep and comprehensive as Sonar.

As a general (though not universal) rule, adding SHIFT to a key command or combo means "do the opposite of what this usually does". EG CTRL+Z+SHIFT is "redo". TAB on an audiosnap clip is "go to next transient" and TAB+SHIFT is "go to previous transient". It doesn't work on everything, but it's always worth a try on stuff. The implementation is pretty thorough, but not particularly documented.

Agree with all of this. For me, this is actually one of the more exciting recent updates. It's not an obvious mega-feature, but it's workflow gold.

Lance Riley [Cakewalk] New Duplicate Track Button (Platinum, Professional, and Artist) Duplicating a track is a widely used technique for mixing to create thick vocals when you add compression and chorus to the double.
Can you bind that to a custom key so that a single button duplicates e.g. the selected track(s) completely identical except for the recorded clips (would very helpful for all tracking sessions)?

The Duplicate button is a single button that does what you want. You can also bind the Duplicate Track function, which defaults to the button behavior you've selected, to a keyboard shortcut and then hit enter.
