SONAR 2017.09 is Now Available!
This month’s release for SONAR Artist, Professional, and Platinum brings new features along with fixes & enhancements to many key elements of SONAR. In SONAR 2017.09 we have added a dedicated button for duplicating tracks to make the tracking and mixing workflow even faster. Speaking of workflow, we have been working with Microsoft on support for the new Surface Dial. This is a perfect device for people who want the feel of a control surface without the wires. It's great on the go and requires no setup to have control Surface like support, so you can keep focused on your music. New FeaturesNew Duplicate Track Button(Platinum, Professional, and Artist)  Duplicating a track is a widely used technique for mixing to create thick vocals when you add compression and chorus to the double. It is also very handy during recording when you are creating different parts using the same instrument or audio setup. In SONAR 2017.09 update we have added a dedicated button for this in the Track view to make it even faster. So you can focus on the music you are making instead of how you are getting there. To set how you want the button to behave you can right-click on the Duplicate button and pick the settings you prefer. Microsoft Surface Dial Integration(Platinum, Professional, and Artist)  Microsoft has released a new device for interacting with Windows 10 and it’s Apps. They call it the Surface Dial! It is apart of a new class of “Wheel” devices that are automatically configured for simple setup and powerful functionality. - ProChannel enable Post FX Rack button is now copied when duplicating a track

- Duplicating a track within a folder could create a new track outside of the folder
- Duplicated tracks now respect the “Follow Track Pan setting

Start Screen- Clicking the Discover tab banner previously opened the Start Screen in a browser

Miscellaneous- Track Control Manager previously listed Sends as AUX
- The Open File dialog did not display some Cakewalk file types when set to “All Cakewalk” Projects, Templates, and Bundles will now all display with this selected
- VST2 plug-ins without GUIs can now be scanned and loaded in SONAR

It says that they have fixed touch when touching the Time Ruler. In the past you could touch the Time Ruler and it would set now time at the point of touch. You could also drag your finger on the time ruler and select a part of a clip. Then those stopped working. Now they say they fixed it again but it is not working properly. Yes now you can again touch the Time Ruler to jump to now time but 8 our of 10 time is also selects the whole project when you touch the ruler. Selecting by dragging finger on the time ruler isn't working either.
I used these features every day now it is difficult to get used to not having them and reaching for the mouse.

That doesn't work properly if you touch and then the whole project is selected. And then you need grab the mouse to unselect it. It just doen't work. It is not a fix though as it is not been fixed. You say it will be "touched improved" but it seems it is going the opposite way if things work and then they don't work anymore right? Another thing that would be great is in the console view touching a track would also select it. That way you can have the inspector open showing the ProChannel and when you touch a track, that track would become the selected track and the inspector would jump focus on the selected track. Just like when you click on a track with the mouse. Or at least have a spot somewhere to touch a track in the console view to make it the selected track. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next update. You get used to a workflow and suddenly it changes.. That is irritating.

I'm really pleased with this update. I find myself duplicating tracks a lot as part of how I work, and this has fixed all my previous niggles with it in one go. And so much quicker to use. One of those "never knew I wanted it til I had it" things.

I tried duplicating an instrument track. I selected a track, right clicked on it, chose Duplicate Track, checked on Events (but not Link to Original Clips), properties, and effects. The duplicated track loaded a different synth than the one I was duplicating. I thought that was odd. Shouldn't it duplicate the same synth? It did duplicate the events. So then I tried to replace synth in the duplicated track and when I chose a synth, it did not load the one I chose. It picked the wrong synth. This happens consistently and I've tried 2 different projects and several different tracks. I did a vst scan in case something was messed up with that. Anybody seeing this or am I missing something? Update 1: I tried this with a new project and it works properly. The above problem was with 2 former but recent projects. Update 2: Duplicate track works ok if I split the instrument track, highlight both midi & synth audio tracks, and then duplicate them both. I don't understand why splitting would be necessary.

As the patch notes mention, the fix was isolated to moving the Now Time Marker around in the Timeline only. We need to address selection separately. Touch bugs are high priority and this will be looked at.

Wouldn't a track ball suffice? Cakewalk could rather manufacture a custom track ball with options to flip wheel behavior between Transport, control and zoom.

Significant and growing. It's where the Windows laptop/surface market is and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. It dovetails in with the pen/dial as well.
I have a touch screen, and find that it doesn't replace the mouse and keyboard. However, it does create a much more fluid workflow because I can use my non-dominant hand for "big" gestures, and my dominant hand for detail work. At the moment I think DAWs are generally in the Stone Age of touch, and SONAR is in the Bronze Age. I'm looking forward to see what the Iron Age and Industrial Age bring

I'm experiencing a "Track Pane" midi clips select/move issue... After installing Splat64 2017.9 on my dell XPS 8900 w10, any previous project with midi tracks loaded had the following malfunction: 1. With smart tool active select a midi clip with move tool auto activated in the clip label and drag it to some midi track and the move tool still appears in the label for the clip in the new location. 2. Press CTRL+Z to undo the move, and the move tool no longer appears in the label in the restored position. 3. If the clip now in the restored position, still shows as selected, a CTRL+X followed by a CTRL+Z will reset to normal tool functions. If the clip is expicitly deselected then the move tool remains unavailable for the clip even if explicitly selected from the tools module. Additionally: A new project with freshly recorded midi clips doesn't exhibit this behavior on a new midi track but... If a midi track is copied via the clipboard from an old project to a midi track on a new project, the issue as above persists... If the project is saved in this state on re-loading it the state remains. Last, in at least one project for the first clip in one of the midi tracks with snap settings as "measure" and "by" the move acted as snap "to", other tracks seemed OK in this regard, but you never know for sure. Can anyone shed any light on this behavior, is this a bug or only a quirk on my system??? I don't recall this happening on previous Splat versions. EDIT: Ditto for audio clips & Splat32, same undo issue on clip drag & move...

At the moment I think DAWs are generally in the Stone Age of touch, and SONAR is in the Bronze Age. I'm looking forward to see what the Iron Age and Industrial Age bring
This is very much my feeling. It seems like we're getting close but not there yet. But I'm hopeful that sometime in the next three-ish years, I'll be doing a big studio upgrade and ditching the control surface for a big Surface Studio-style touchscreen. I'm not personally that excited about the dial. I think some combination of touch for most stuff, but with a small Console One-style box-o-knobs for certain more tactile tasks seems like my ideal.

Some platforms show a download button without signing in. If not, you can just make up an account with a bogus email. Even if it's bogus, it still lets us know which articles generate the most interest so I can keep writing similar material for future issues.

i can read it without signing in, this is in waterfox browser (firefox x64 build), although it seems to be a single doc so i'm not sure how they differentiate between "articles", is it by page?

Yes, the feedback is invaluable. For one thing, it showed that people really pay attention to the articles on the 30 freebies, so I know it's worth spending time on describing what the presets, samples, etc. do.
