SONAR 4 Producer MIDI ISSUE
I can't get Sonar 4 PE to play a midi file through a USB MIDI interface. It worked yesterday so I must have changed something. It will play a MIDI file to the internal Windows MS GS Synth ok but won't play to my external sound synth using the USB MIDI interface. The USB interface works ok. I can play a MIDI file through it using MS Media Player 11 and it will play the file on the external sound module using the USB interface. I set the correct MIDI interface via the Control Pannel. Yesterday I was using an external beat box and I had SONAR as the master clock so that the beat box would stay in sync with the metronome. It worked fine. Now when I use the the USB MIDI device, SONAR doesn't do anything when I press the space bar. But if the MIDI device is set to the internal MIDI synth SONAR plays fine when I hit the space bar. Any ideas on what needs to be set? Thanks!

Which USB interface? Go to Options-Audio-Advanced and set the driver mode to ASIO (or WDM) depending on which interface you have.

Those are not the best option and won't work with Windows 7 if you ever upgrade. You should get something better, like the Cakewalk UM-3G. They are purely MIDI interfaces, no audio capability. What shows up in Options-MIDI Devices? Make sure you select the ones on the right and select move devices to the top because the interfaces are numbers in the order they are listed.

Sonar tends to be a little more picky about the drivers than other simple music software. You need to spend more than that to use it without issues. Might as well purchase a proper audio/MIDI interface.

Thanks all! The MIDI interfaces has worked fine for over a year with my laptop and ditto for my desktop at home. I've never had an issue with it and other MIDI aps can access it and use it. My opinion is that the MIDI interface is not the issue. By all definitions of the MIDI standards it is a 'proper' MIDI interface. As to Win7, I have no intentions to moving off of WinXP as I have other hardware that will not run under Win7 and thus far, I haven't had any issues that requiered Win7 for a solution. I encoutered the issue AFTER I used SONAR's MIDI clock to sync an external beat machine with it so that the beat machine is in sync with SONA's metronome. That worked fine. Now it seems that SONAR is waiting for a reply from my external sound modual before it will start playing the file. I've tried all the MIDI settings I can find in SONAR but it still hangs and will not start playing even though I issue a start command. Any ideas on what to setting I should have set for MIDI to play? Thanks! Tony

that's what it's supposed to do. Well, I am not sure just what you mean. Before I would just hit the spce bar and SONAR would start playing. Now it doesn't. Windows Media Player plays the midi just fine through the midi interface to the external sound module. So the hardware is working fine. I just can't get SONAR to trigger it.

Did some further testing. SONAR will use the external sound module for the metronome note sound. So if I arm an audio track and press R the metronome starts via the USB MIDI interface and the external sound module makes the metronome sound. Proff that the hardware is OK. But SONAR will not play ANY MIDI file to the external sound modual.

ok, but if you're using a MIDI sync then you're not going to get it to play until it receives MIDI data saying it's time to start. Yesterday I was using an external beat box and I had SONAR as the master clock so that the beat box would stay in sync with the metronome. It worked fine. Now when I use the the USB MIDI device, SONAR doesn't do anything when I press the space bar. But if the MIDI device is set to the internal MIDI synth SONAR plays fine when I hit the space bar. that's what it's supposed to do. unless I'm not understanding all that you're saying. if sonar is in MIDI SYNC mode, it will wait on the external "beat box" before starting. if you change the clock source back to MIDI or AUDIO (internal) then it will play when you hit the space bar because it's not waiting on an external clock.

So you can play a metronome "sound" via the external sound module and Sonar runs for audio but then you claim it won't run for a MIDI File. This seems to imply your audio master timing device is set wrong.

Set the clock to Internal. "Internal" is SONAR's MIDI clock. It's low resolution (based on system clock, I believe), and is not compatible with audio recording or playback. "Audio" is the preferred clock mode.

just to clarify the options (which I had a little wrong above) from the help files: This section lets you choose what device SONAR uses as a timing source, and has the following options: Internal. Choose this option to use the clock on the computer’s motherboard. MIDI Sync. Choose this option to sync SONAR to an external MIDI device. SMPTE/MTC. Choose this option to sync SONAR to an external device that generates either SMPTE time code or MIDI time code. Audio. Choose this option to use the clock on the computer’s sound card. choose AUDIO to sync to the soundcard clock or INTERNAL (not best choice, but still works) to allow sonar to play when you hit the spacebar without waiting on an external clock signal.

Thanks for all the tips but I still have the problem. Sonar won't start playing a MIDI file to my external sound module when I hit the space bar. I've tried every clock setting under OPTIONS -> PROJECT -> CLOCK -> SOURCE. If I disconnect the MIDI out cable from the sound module that connects to the MIDI in of the USB midi interface, SONAR WILL start playing the file. This works when the clock is set to INTERNAL or AUDIO. But if I reconnect the MIDI in cable SONAR hangs again. Interestingly, Windows Media Player will play to the external sound module if the MIDI in cable is connected or not. So why does SONAR hange when the MIDI in cable is conneced? This is driving me nuts! Thanks!

Sounds like you getting a loop back. Used to be 3 jacks , IN/OUT/THRU' which was a better system. So now you might have to go into the menu of the sound module and disable THRU to the out jack?? just a long shot.

It's now WORKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I powered down the Alesis NanoSynth and left it off for 5 minutes. Powered it up, and re-booted the laptop. Now it works with both MIDI cables connected. I did the same thing two weeks ago and it didn't help. Today it did. Go figure. Thanks for all the help & suggesstions.
