SONAR 5 dropout

Is there some kind of console or something in sonar that will tell me what's causing the dropout? I can record 8 tracks, but any more and the machine will record for a measure or so, then stop and tell me the disk may be full, which definitely isn't true. This only occurs when I record to an external hard disk, not the internal one, and only happened after I recently replaced the motherboard in this notebook.

One would think that would imply the board i got wasn't the same, but if I could just find out what's really causing the issue, I could address it. I'm inclined to think it's the USB driver which is somehow different on this new board, but I've updated it to no avail.

What I do is record to the internal drive and then after last save do a SAVE AS to the external drive. I've never had luck recording direct to the USB external drive. You are most likely correct it's a USB issue.

The internal disk is only 37GB, though - and less than 2 of it is free. I think somehow I got shorted a board that only has USB 1.1

You don't give us any info needed for answering, Mike.

    Except for, maybe:

If there's only 2 Gb free on your system drive, it's can already be dysfunctional to some extent. A HDD should have at least 10-15% free space.

How fast is the external HDD? Having only USB 1.1 and possibly a 5200 rpm HDD could be the culprit.

That "Disc may be full" message can mean whatever, and thus it could mean that the data just can't be moved fast enough. Having eight tracks to monitor and the ninth to record could well be too much for USB 1.1 (???).

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Good heavens Mike, You need a new laptop! That things so old you won't even find parts for it so I won't recommend upgrading the Hard drive or RAM. Most interfaces only run on USB 2.

It's not actually mine - just a friend's. I built him a desktop a while ago (q6600, 8GB of memory, a pretty awesome core 2 quad machine), but he uses the notebook to take to recording jobs strictly to hit the record button.

The external disks I built him are all desktop drives, so they're 7200RPM and the interfaces are USB 2.0, so that's not the issue.

I'm fairly certain the replacement board that I got was not for his specific machine, and I got something with USB 1.1 on it. The original one definitely had USB 2.0.

I'm leaving what to do with it up to him. The notebook is really old. Quite frankly I was ready to ditch it when the board died the first time.
