SONAR 8.5 On Sale at Et Cetera

I received this from my Music Tech Newsletter subscription, so I think it just about has to be legitimate. And I didn't see anything about it being an academic/non-profit deal either. But I sincerely apologize if it is not!

Apparently a website called Et Cetera is offering Sonar 8.5 well over half off (£129 ~ $200). In addition they are claiming that you can receive a free upgrade to X1 if you order by the end of Feb.

Even if you end paying £84 extra for the upgrade you are at $340 US total.

Not bad for a product that is so in demand it can't be kept in stock.

Usually with software such as books, magazines, CD's, Lps, and DVDs (which BTW are software) a vendor gets a buy back guaranty so that they are encouraged to maintain stock yet not be held liable for stock that will not sell.

A company like Cakewalk has the choice to have all old stock versions destroyed for credit against new full price product.

Selling v8.5 for less that 1/2 price ($499 down to $200) after it's dead and giving away X1 on top of it for free is one option.

Having the v8.5 stock destroyed and the serial numbers retired in exchange for fresh new full price stock is an option that might be more profitable for the retailer,  the wholesaler, and the manufacturer. And if it is done transparently there is no downside to the customers.

    It is after all... software.

In fact, the buy back system can prevent a customer who just paid full price from becoming annoyed to learn that everyone else is getting the same goods... and more... for half the price.

Although, it is true that some of us have had an extra 2 months to enjoy X1.

    best regards,
    mike

Et Cetera is offering Sonar 8.5 well over half off

They're a European distributor trying to clear stock of v8.5 packages.
Why waste the time/energy/money sending packages back to the US?
If they're sold, some profit is made on each piece.  If not, it's money lost (printing/packing/shipping)

On a local level, Guitar Center does this kind of stuff all the time...
ie:  Not too long ago, GC had a sale on MusicMan gear that had been collecting dust.
In many cases, this was due to bad setups, a bad pot, etc.
Wasn't half off... but you could save 30-40% (which is significant on a $2000 instrument).
When new models are coming in... you can catch some good prices on outgoing models.

It works 2 ways really as stated

    1) extra money / time / effort to post back.. BUT I know 2 of their rivals that now use "generic" packaging to save on such things.. and only the disks pretty much have to be destroyed.. As I was gonna try to get a grace period update.hehe

    2) say you don't have loads of money.. it's a great way to get into it using DAW's.

I buy the odd bit of software b-stock also. (ozone 3) as well , a dent in a box is gonna affect how it works ?hehe

that prices is UK price.. and well as much as we get taxed for US things , you might find it taxes again (making it not so cheap) . Also that stuff might only be eligible for the UK or EU market.. looking at the cake shop the US folk can buy things we can't (normally 3rd party things)

in the UK one of the major outlets (turn key) went bust maybe 2-3 years ago now ? why ? partly because of over stocking.. so their main rivals are over cautious not to do the same. they had £30 million in stock .. and well high price boxes that don't shift aren't good.

to put it into purspective with US folk , I guess it was a company like the size of sweet water or guitar centre center ?

the market is a really tough place and a lot more fragmented.. so if it brings in new customers, great ... but I do think getting UK artists or Europeans involved is a way... as there are a few , but I bet folk can only name the US ones.

Millions of dollars (at face value) worth of periodicals ( traditionally considered software ) are simply disposed of using the honor system or sometimes the return of the front page.

Music CDs are returned and redistributed... because they have continual value in other markets.

Simply retiring the serial numbers should suffice and everyone can write off their expense of either manufacture and/or cost of disposal where as discounting is simply discounting and there is very little benefit to it.

    very best regards,
    mike

i can vouch for it being a genuine deal, picked it up from  them earlier in the month, its a full boxed copy of 8.5 producer and does indeed get you a free upgrade to x1 producer ( Make sure you have plenty of bandwidth, the x1 download totals something like 11gb), also there was something about the deal expiring in feb

They don't have to worry about being supplied with boxed X1 product as you'd only qualify for the download...

Maybe that's the rationale they can continue to shift product without waiting for stock to arrive.

For a new UK Sonar user it is a great way into the upgrade trail.

I think this question may have been answered for you, but just in case for anyone else browsing, this is from the product page itself.

Register on Cakewalks website before end Feb 2011 and get X1 Producer as a download for free!

    2) X1 Producer is going for $399, Studio for $199 list price.
