SONAR CRASHES - Project Disappears. Autosave Copy Remains.

Howdy from Texas...

This has been a problem for me since 8.5

I'm experiencing numerous crashes today ...I'll have to remedy that...

The point of this post is to report that project files simply disappear when the program crashes...
right now it appears multiple instances of Melodyne are the most likely cause

Here's another fun fact ...

I saved the original
then made another copy with "ORIG" in the file name
...from that instance I saved another version and titled it with "A" in the filname

...in this case ...both "ORIG" and "A" have disappeared despite having been manually saved several times before the crash
"A" was the current file open and being worked. Apparently the crash took both away.

Anyone else experience similar?
Again ...this has been an ongoing problem for several years across several different workstations over the years.

What method are you using to open the "lost" file(s)? The Quickstart dialog or the global menus File > Open method?

The reason I ask is I have indeed had projects crash (with X1 and X2... none with X3 so far except one time when I was being stupid) and when I reopened the program to reopen the project it no longer appeared in my Quickstart projects menu BUT if I closed the QUickstart and went to File > Open they were indeed still there in the folder I had last saved them to and opened normally.

The other thing I would suggest to avoid this from happening, because I have COMPLETELY lost Save As versions of projects (as far as I can tell but they are likely lurking somewhere on the DAW and I may just be imagining this), is that when you are at a critical enough juncture in your project to go to the bother of using Save As to create a version point of the project (like bass tracking done, rhythm guit done, pre-mix editing done, etc) is to do the Save As then CLOSE Sonar completely. That has always guaranteed that if the project crashes hard that I will be able to open that version from the File > Open menu. Without first closing the project after creating the Save As I have had versions disappear and all work lost (as far as I can tell). Again this only happened with X1 and X2 but I have not had any real crashes that lost material with X3. I'm assuming it could still happen though so I always follow that procedure to avoid that possibility.

Hopefully that helps... but yes if you are experiencing a lot of crashes and project loss then you need to do some work figuring out what is causing it.

Cheers.

Another thing to look at is perhaps when you did your Save As you may have inadvertently created another folder so you are looking in the wrong place. I have done this before too before I got a better handle on how Sonar creates files. I still get buggered up by all that actually. My hard drives are a bit of a mess because of that... d'oh.

Thanks Beepster ...that sounds like a good safe way to ensure projects are protected as it were...

I've had this problem over the years... although the incident of reliable work is far greater than crashing ...today it seems multiple instances of Melodyne (used as region FX) are most likely the problem...
I'll also up the buffer as I proceed today...

I'm fairly well organised in the saving ...although far from faultless! ... Thanks Again for the thoughts!

I suggest...

Try excluding the folder where you save your files from your virus scanner.
Also from an administrative command prompt run chkdsk /F
Always back up to something like an external hard drive.

Thanks.

Right on. I am still curious about whether you were using the Quickstart or the File menu. Seriously I have found many versions I thought were lost by looking in there.

Eith way... yeah. Sonar tends to get cranky with low buffers when doing the really fancy stuff like Audiosnap... and I'm now getting the impression that Melodyne may suffer from the same resource hogginess based on posts here. I haven't tried it yet but am about to.

Cheers.

Thanks Cake Alex ... I will try that the virus exclusion ...
CURIOUS ...what will chkdisk F do in this instance?

Thank You Beepster! I use the File Menu to locate after crashes... you're right ...the original never appears in the Quickstart pull down after a crash....

Cool. Honestly as far as I can remember I have never seen the File menu vs. Quickstart recovery thing discussed here. It was just something I do now after having it work after crashes.

Then again it's been a long time and I may have actually learned that here... probably from scook if I did.

Either way... "lost project"? Always check File > Open.

(that was for the benefit for anyone searching the forum for solutions about this)

CURIOUS ...what will chkdisk /F do in this instance?

There is a small possibility you might have data corruption on your drive causing files to disappear. This (chkdisk <drive> /F )will scan the drive for errors (for a more comprehensive scan use the /R flag). I generally recommend a defrag afterwards as well. Cheers...

Thanks Beepster and CakeAlex!!!
I will ask our tech guy to do those things!!!
and yes Beepster ...File Open is the only way to do that!!!

I think it's a problem with too many instances of Melodyne open at the same time and a buffer setting....
...we'll see if anyone comments on that !

I've seen it mentioned a few times that it's best to do whatever it is you need melodyne to do then bounce it to avoid problems (and if you think you may want to return to the original clip to make a copy before messing with it... obviously). I could definitely see having multiple open instances of melodyne causing issues.

I totally think this is correct...

Odd thing is I've had LOTS of short clips open simultaneously on other projects ...recently... that didn't crash.
All in all ... I believe Melodyne in multiple instances is causing this.....
What I did was correct the problem(s) ...export the file ... then remove the region FX in preparation for the next edit.

Thanks Beepster for sticking with this one!! Hope I can be of help on something sometime!

Melodyne : cut up the track into small pieces.

After 4 or 5 "corrections" bounce the track. Then go on to the next few regions etc. Works for me like that just fine. Yes its a PITA to do things small wise but who cares, i've never lost data by doing it that way.

Cheers,
Jerry

Just reading about other people's issues and then watching as they figure them out helps me immensely actually. That way if I encounter problems I have an idea of how to deal with them. If it's something I've seen another thread about and can offer a suggestion that ends up working then it is just extra proof that solution is worth keeping in mind.

So basically you have already helped me. I haven't even tried out Melodyne yet... lol...

I am about to though (gonna convert a bass line to MIDI using the ARA stuff) so I've been keeping an eye on Melodyne related threads.

Cheers.

is "write caching" disabled in device manager, for the hd where the files "disappear"?
