SONAR Courses ?
Hi all I was hopeing to ask what are your thoughts on sonar courses ? I am thinking it would be good to do some but I dont know where to start. What would you recomend as an online course ? I dont have the funds to become a full time sound production student and my interest is sonar not pro tools or anything else but the collages in my area use pro tools. I live in scotland and I dont think there is any courses in this country so I think my best bet might be an online course. whats your thoughts ? Thanks for any advice Norrie

Berklee School of Music offers an online course in Sonar. I have not seen it but I have taken 2 other online courses there and found it to be an excellent program. (a bit on the expensive side though) Our resident forum guru CJ may have other options for you. Or, you could read the manual (this step is optional for many people apparently) and then log into the forums everyday and ask questions when you are stuck. But ya, an organized instruction course will get you where you want to go alot faster. Good luck -Mike

I do like the look of the Berklee one but like you say it is a bit on the expensive side. Manual is always a good Idea and is always right next to me in the studio. The forum here is good every one helps a lot some times things get a bit over whelming since I am so new to it all I work better with screen prints videos and some one takeing the time to talk me through something I was lucky enough to come in to some money and used it all to get a VS-700 because I had always wanted to learn to record and now I feel I should be makeing the most of it so thought best way to go would be a course. I hope CJ you talk about jumps in with some ideas Norrie

I like Scott's book , but to get it in the UK is more of a hassle http://www.find-book.co.uk/1598638211.htm I use book fella's to get both of them.. far better than amazon uk for them. also there is some videos stuart did from SWA... I bought them when they were on offer months ago.. errm they were in the music tech sonar book.. well parts of them http://streamworksaudio.com/ you just missed out on an offer they ran.. someone ages ago posted they were doing all their vid's cheapo.. so I bought/ downloaded the ones for the things I use.

I took the Pro Tools certification course with Pro Media, just to add some legitimacy to my resume. It was a great course, with an excellent instructor (Mihai at Stankonia in Atlanta). It was however a little on the pricey side. I think it was ~$3000 for the two weeks. I lived right down the street so that didnt include motel or food costs that some had to pay) While I would recommend a classroom environment just for the forced learning experience and interaction, I can honestly say your best bet would be to purchase Sonar Power, and just go through it chapter by chapter with Sonar open, and explore everything. This is essentially what I did with Sonar Power 4. There was really no new material for me to learn when it came to being introduced to Pro Tools 7 (granted they operate slightly different but they do the exact same thing), and the class pretty much consisted of the same thing - going through the reading material chapter by chapter.

Just get a copy of Sonar Power, it tells you everything you need to know, with that book and a little common sense, you really don't need to pay big bucks for a course..And don't forget to experiment alot, it's your studio you don't need to watch the clock....Scott Garrigus rocks!!!!!

Norrie, In addition to the Sonar Help and User's Guide, don't overlook the Sonar 8.5 Reference Guide.pdf file that comes with Sonar 8.5. It is a 25 MB PDF file that contains 1576 pages of detailed Sonar information. IMO, it is far more useful than the User's Guide. There are also some very good free videos that are referenced on the first page of the Sonar Producer & Studio Forum pages (e.g., Sonar: Master Class - Drum Production Episode I) that are excellent. There are some user produced videos on YouTube that illustrate various Sonar capabilities that can be quite useful too. Good luck and have fun with your Sonar adventure. Regards, bbent

I took a good class at a local community college. The course probably cost $100 for a full 16-week semester. I suspect the cost has gone up with the economic problem in California. It was an audio recording class, but it featured Sonar 6. Not only did I switch from Cubase Home, I eventually upgraded to Sonar 7. Now I have 8.5 waiting to get installed.

I went to a community/adult learning college in London who were offering courses in music tech and production and asked them what software they used and Sonar was not one of them Reason, Logic, Protools and Cubase is pretty much what you'll find in the UK although that was about 6 years ago so I rekon Albleton and maybe even Reaper will be on offer now. When I asked about Sonar they said, no but if you're interested in running courses your self then please do feel free :) Of course another on line education in sonar and all things to do with music production is right here on this very forum, trouble is you'll find equal amounts of conjecture along side, "and often disguised", as fact :( Steve

Anybody out there aware of an in-person type training course that exists in or around the Daytona Beach, Edgewater Florida area? The closer to Edgewater the better!

Here's a directory at the Audio Engineering Society of in-house education courses. http://www.aes.org/education/directory/programs.cfm?GeoID=1&ProgTypeID=1 In most cases they are not located conveniently nearby, they are expensive, and usually only cover leading DAW software like Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, or Ableton. Although if you have experience with any of those, you should be able to read the Sonar manual and/or Scott's book and be up and running.
DAW: CbB; Sonar Platinum, and others ...

I'm just in the process of making a bunch of video tutorials that I needed to help a few family members and my band mate. Instead of sitting with them all day in turn I thought this will work just as well So far I've done 5 on the very very basics as these people have never used a computer for music ever. But as I go along I'll cover more advanced material. And ya it by no means a professional video, Its free. There is enough free stuff on youtube that I wouldn't run out and spend money until you really find you've hit a brick wall. http://www.cactusmusic.ca/tutorial-videos
