SONAR Home Studio 7 Feature List

Hi all,

My name is Samara and I'm the product manager for Home Studio. Here is a complete (and long) list of all the new features in SHS7 in addition to the new UI. Any questions please feel free to ask!

Cheers,

Samara Krugman
Product Manager - SONAR Home Studio 7

-----------------------------------------------------

Instrument track

An instrument track is essentially two tracks—a MIDI track and an audio track, both associated with the same soft synth—contained in a single track strip. An instrument track allows you to control the MIDI data that is sent to a soft synth and the audio signal that is returned from the soft synth.

Loop Explorer enhancements

You can browse and audition both audio and MIDI files in the Loop Explorer view, then drag the desired files into your project. Audio files can be auditioned through any bus and MIDI files can be auditioned through any soft synth.

Insert Send Assistant

The Insert Send Assistant makes it fast and easy to create effect buses and insert sends to new or existing buses.

Track Assistant

The Track Assistant makes it fast and easy to insert one or more audio, MIDI and instrument tracks. You can create new blank tracks or insert tracks from existing track templates.

Exclusive Solo mode

By default, SONAR allows you to solo multiple tracks and buses simultaneously. With the new Exclusive Solo mode, you can only solo one track and one bus at a time.

When you solo a track or bus in Exclusive Solo mode, all other soloed tracks or buses are automatically unsoloed. This allows you to quickly listen to individual tracks and buses in isolation without having to manually unsolo other tracks or buses.

Free Edit Tool

The new Free Edit tool allows you to perform both time based selection and clip selection.

wow, so this answers my questions, shs7 MUST be based on the code for sonar 8, wow you shs users are getting a real deal here, given the much better DAWbench results this audio engine is getting...and new things like the INstruments tracks, loop explorer 2.0 etc...and the pretty GUI!

That's what I was going to ask! It seems that these features are some of the same ones that are listed as new features for S8 - so does that mean that SHS7 is based on Sonar 8?

    Samara,

Just to be clear you said SHS7 will have "Studio Instruments Drums". The website says SHS7XL has "Studio Instruments" (the whole package).

So is that true between to two versions (one has only drums, the other has the whole thing)?

wow! I currently have Sonar SE 7...most of the advanced features I don't use...so, I'm switching to HS7 to simplify my workflow....sounds like, for me at least, a smart move because many of the new features in v.8 have been included in HS7...woohoo....

One, quick question....can one still have multiple midi tracks feeding different channels on one multi-timbral softsynth? My guess one would have the option of inserting a new "instrument track" or loading it the the "old way" with both a midi and an audio track....

If anyone could let me know..that would be cool...though I've already ordered my "crossgrade" to HS7....

oh, btw, my 2 cents: I freakin' love the GUI...so much less clutter and things just "pop" on the screen....very cool

    Kind Regards:
    Eric

    Impressive indeed.

What with all the annual hullabaloo going on over in the SONAR forum it's a credit to you and Cakewalk that you've come up with what seems to be an absolute gem of a product in HS7.

I just can't wait to get my hands on my XL version.

    Hats off to you

    Hmm. Some interesting features.
One of the first things we noticed with SHS6(XL) was the increased CPU load (from SHS4). Enhanced CPU performance?
    Updated ACT?(Steve, get that Edirol!!!)
    Multiple automation lanes? Hmmm.
Exclusive solo looks interesting. So does some of the other stuff.
I am quite happy with SHS6XL, but there is some tasty stuff in 7.
I stand by my assertion that SHS is a killer bang for the buck package.
Samara, why such a low profile introduction of SHS7? It seems a nice package, but it slid in through the back door.

Thank you so much for sharing this list! Answers a lot of questions... I was hoping that the flexible piano-roll tools from Sonar 7 were in there, in particular. Looks like at least some of 'em are!

The new GUI is a bit startling, but I think I'm going to really like it.

Really, I only have one question..... why isn't this called Sonar Home Studio 8?

That is correct. Studio Instruments Drums replaces Session Drummer 2 in Home Studio 7. Home Studio 7 XL has the full suite of Studio Instruments.

We have not changed any of the limitations with "traditional" instrument tracks. You can use the new Single Track Instrument or the multi track instrument in Home Studio 7.

    Hi there

There seems to be a bug in SHS 6 in that track automation envelopes other than pan, volume and mute cannot be copied (for example, automation envelopes controlling synth parameters). Is this corrected in SHS 7?

There's a current thread discussing this issue here: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=1501651

I am also in contact with Cakewalk support regarding this.

    Thank you,

Thanks for all the info! Can you confirm a few things for me - If I read the web site correctly, as an existing customer, to upgrade from HS6XL, to 7XL is about 45 / 49 $$ is that correct. If I do this, will the new disc recognize 6XL and just add the new stuff, replace Session Drummer-2 with Studio drummer, etc... or will it install itself as a completely new folder? And what happens to projects that are already saved with 6XL features on it.......

    Thanks !

    Hi Charles

    * The upgrade for registered users of 6XL to 7XL is $59

    * You will install 7XL as a completely new program - the software will recognise your previous version but it won't replace or change anything, providing you don't unistall it. All of the 'features' available in 6XL will open and work perfectly in 7XL and vice versa, the only things that will differ are the various program features that differ in the versions of the software itself.

okay thanks for the clarification ! What a deal. One quick one - Can the upgrade be downloaded or do I need to get the disc sent to me??? (hope this is not a stupid question)

Charles, the 'upgrade' really refers to the 'special' price you pay as a registered 6XL user - you will receive a brand new complete version of 7XL, just as if you'd bought it at a computer or music store.

They'll send you a boxed version with the two (?) installation discs exactly the same as a new customer, only for significantly less dough! Their is no download for Home Studio available.

Personally, I see this very generous upgrade/crossgrade policy Cakewalk follows goes a long way to make up the for the fact that we can't legally sell our software/licence.

    Hi Samara,

I just finished watching your SHS 7 Youtube interview (you sure are purty ). Anyway, I had a question about the "new audio file formats" feature you mentioned. Does this by any chance include mp3 export, or will we still be required to purchase the codec seperately? Thanks again for taking time to give us all this info.

EDIT: I found the answer to my own question in this thread...sadly the answer is no .

    Hi, Samara
I bought 6XL a little over a month ago, and I love it, but had I known 7 was on the way, I would certainly have waited. Also, deal tho it is, I don't have 59 bucks. (I really am a starving artist.) Any chance you'll upgrade me for free?

If it was literally only a month ago, there's a mail-in form for a free upgrade to SHS7. I have the PDF form from when I purchased a few weeks ago. It says it's valid for any purchase between 8/1 and 9/30 (US customers only, and only for full SHS6/SHS6XL purchases, not upgrades). If you can't find it, Clint, PM me.

I have been searching for that but didn't find anything:

How is the freeze function organized?

I'm a (in the whole very happy) user of Samplitude Music Studio 15 (germany). But there are a few features that I miss in this application so far:

    - freezing a track im MS15 means: it' only possible in 16bit mode .... the question is: why do they announce the 24bit recording when later on freezing is only possible in 16bit...

    - so: does SHS7 freeze the tracks in 24bit mode?

    - how many inserts plugin can be used?

    - how many auxes and sub groups (busses) can be used?

    - does SHS7 support multi cores?

If anyone could point out a site where these infos are available. I searched for it (on the product sites) but without succes so far. Maybe I#m just blind....

I tried out Sonar Studio 7 earlier but I couldn't get used to the workflow. I have to state that the Samplitude worklflow is much more MY THING .....

But since the new GUI of SHS7 looks a bit easier to get used to I ask here on the cakewalk stuff again .....

It will freeze following the project bit rate...so, yes
as many inserts as your cpu can handle
as many bus/aux as you like...there's a limit of 64 audio tracks
    yes, to multicore

One, quick question....can one still have multiple midi tracks feeding different channels on one multi-timbral softsynth? My guess one would have the option of inserting a new "instrument track" or loading it the the "old way" with both a midi and an audio track....

Most softsynths are NOT multi-timbral. The TTS-1 is the only one I can think of and I have a lot of them. For most softsynths, if you want to use multiple sounds from the same softsynth, you need to load a separate instance for each patch.

    Hi Samara

Can you please let us have some details on what is NOT in HS7 that was in HS6.

We seem to be missing such vital features as the Track Manager and Track Inspector as well as the function that allows more than one instance of HS running.

Can you let us know if these items have generally been removed or whether they are missing because of a (fixable) bug, or whether we're just not doing something right?

The Track Inspector, which I use all the time in HS6, is mentioned in HS7's help files but the 'I' keystroke doesn't turn it on in HS7.

If these features have been deliberately left out of HS7, which I find astonishing, can I have my £39 back?

    Steve
