SONAR Producer 8.5 Works on Windows 10 (if you don't do what I did)
I was trying for ages to find out if my (aging) copy of SONAR 8.5 would work on Windows 10. I had tried a quick install check and it didn't work very well: Audio played okay, but the display "chunked" and froze a lot - things like the time code would update in spurts while playing. MIDI events were either slow or fast. It was a mess. It was also at odds with the several posts on this forum saying it should work. I was confused and annoyed.
I gave up and put it off, thinking I was going to have to spend a huge chunk of money to update. When I found out there was no upgrade discount for 8.5 I was leaning toward switching to Logic as I've been mostly a Mac user for the last 8-10 years and if I was going to have to start over again...
This time I had a random thought to first install my audio interfaces and drivers (Line 6 Sonic Port VX and KB37) instead of just "testing" with the motherboard sound hardware in my PC.
Duh.
All the stuttering and chunking went away and everything plays fine. I even resurrected an old SONAR 4 recording I hadn't heard in many years. (I have a non-networked Windows XP DAW running SONAR 4 on a shelf "just in case I want to play with it", but that's a different story.)
So, anyway, don't be like me and trust your crappy motherboard sound hardware to tell you if SONAR works and you should be fine with Windows 10. Hopefully that will save someone else the pain.
