SONAR Producer 8.5 Works on Windows 10 (if you don't do what I did)

I was trying for ages to find out if my (aging) copy of SONAR 8.5 would work on Windows 10. I had tried a quick install check and it didn't work very well: Audio played okay, but the display "chunked" and froze a lot - things like the time code would update in spurts while playing. MIDI events were either slow or fast. It was a mess. It was also at odds with the several posts on this forum saying it should work. I was confused and annoyed.

I gave up and put it off, thinking I was going to have to spend a huge chunk of money to update. When I found out there was no upgrade discount for 8.5 I was leaning toward switching to Logic as I've been mostly a Mac user for the last 8-10 years and if I was going to have to start over again...

This time I had a random thought to first install my audio interfaces and drivers (Line 6 Sonic Port VX and KB37) instead of just "testing" with the motherboard sound hardware in my PC.

Duh.

All the stuttering and chunking went away and everything plays fine. I even resurrected an old SONAR 4 recording I hadn't heard in many years. (I have a non-networked Windows XP DAW running SONAR 4 on a shelf "just in case I want to play with it", but that's a different story.)

So, anyway, don't be like me and trust your crappy motherboard sound hardware to tell you if SONAR works and you should be fine with Windows 10. Hopefully that will save someone else the pain.

Well if your happy  then fine. Sonar has come a long, long way since 8.5. I still have it installed because I needed V Vocal and True Pianos back when I used X3 Studio. My DAW is now W10 and 8.5 opens no problem, don't see why it wouldn't.  I find Home Studio is even more advanced than 8.5.pro So I'm not sure what you need but you could at buy Home Studio for a lousy $50 and you'd at least be up to date.
And All new versions of Sonar will run with on board sound cards now because of WASAPI mode.

One thing that is unclear is why you bother holding on to an obsolete version (version 4) when Sonar Platinum 2017 can load all Sonar files going back to Sonar 1 as well as Pro Audio files.  Plus I have life time updates. You could have gotten that too.

I can see why you may love Sonar 8.5 and going to a lot of effort to keep it yet it too is an obsolete version. Platinum can and does run rings around 8.5. The feature list for Platinum is so long now it would take a book to list them all.

This puts me in mind of people running DOS with floppy disks when SSDs and large HDs are common.

The OP is really bringing up the new pricing policy more than the "obsolete" version in a round about way.

I use Platinum and really appreciate all the cutting edge development, but I have to admit, sometimes I find myself opening up Sonar 3 from 2004.  That was where I started with Cakewalk and midi recording.  Before that, it was Cool Edit Pro.  I recall those magic moments when I first began to use the VSampler or the Edirol Virtual Sound Canvas. It really is sort of a nostalgic  feeling.  Like old songs, Maybe, there is a market for nostalgic software.
