SONAR Studio 8 refusing to install

Hi all, new here, but been around SONAR for quite some time.

I absolutely adore some of the VSTs that come with SONAR and I have mounds of old projects I need to update (in FL Studio, mind you; preference over referral in this case) but I can't load them if I can't get SONAR installed. Here's what I'm getting while the "Registering files" section is taking place during installation:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\NullProxy.dll

Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0xC0000005. (I've gotten exit code 0xFF previously)

Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation.

In the past, I've clicked Ignore just to get everything installed, but none of the VSTs, or any plugins for that matter, were actually installed. Just most of the support files. And I couldn't use SONAR itself because it wasn't registered properly and wouldn't open the application all the way. I'd get a notification dialog saying it wasn't registered properly and the application would close.

I've searched everywhere, but there's only two unsolved threads on the internet that have anything to do with this issue. Somewhere said that installing in 32-bit worked fine, while 64-bit didn't--however, you can see that I've tried installing 32-bit AND 64-bit, and neither one ended any differently.

I had an older machine running a 32-bit version of Windows 7 instead of 64-bit like this machine, and it ran SONAR, installed fine, and loaded all the VSTs correctly. I don't have any clue what's going wrong or where to begin on this computer. Only difference is this machine is 64-bit. All the same updates are in place. Latest everything; Windows Installer 3.1, Win7 SP1, the works.

PLEASE, someone chime in. I've been promising to release some of these tracks soon and I can't seem to get the plugins I require installed. It's make or break now!

Are you installing in the default locations?

Are you right clicking and selecting Run As Administrator when starting the installation?

Do you have Windows7 drivers for your soundcard and other hardware?

The error you're getting is telling you that you do not have permission to edit the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry hive. You need to run regsvr32.exe as Administrator or log in as Administrator.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I am not running the installer as an administrator. I'll try that.

I have all latest and all Windows 7 x64 drivers for everything installed. Another driver broke a lot a while back, and I've since had to replace everything.

I am not installing the VSTs to the default directories, because I need them in the root VstPlugins folder already in use by my main DAWs (FL Studio and Ableton Live). Everything else is being installed to default directories. I am running a full installation.

I am already logged in as an administrator, because this is THE administrator account on this computer. I made this account when Windows 7 was installed, making it automatically the administrator account. However, I will try running regsvr32.exe and the SONAR installer as an administrator anyway--seems to act differently than using them inside an administrator account. Lol, Windows.

Still a no-go. Running the installer as an administrator did nothing new. Also, I cannot run regsvr32.exe individually as an administrator, nor can I set it to run as an administrator in the future. Compatibility settings are disabled because the file is part of Windows. And the system denies access to permissions changes. Any code monkeys know some terminal commands I can use?

Even though you are logged on as an administrator, you still have to use Run As Administrator. This is a known Windows quirk that has been discussed in this forum a few times.

Yeah I know, it's a bit ****ed. However, I wasn't able to change permissions using the GUI, so I need to find some way to give SYSTEM, and the Administrators group permission to use regsvr32.exe.

All I know is you insert the DVD, right click and choose "run As Administrator" it's kinda simple. Don't let the software auto run.

    No ya don't....

Start-Run type CMD and press enter. That will give you a command prompt with admin privileges. Then type in the regsvr32 command and hit enter. Should work.

I'm getting the same problem. I am running Win 7 64-bit operating system.

Have tried everything. I am running X1 Studio installation as Administrator (not just logged on with Admin priviledges). Have all virus / crypto apps turned off. Re-booted several times. Tried to install both 64-bit and 32-bit installs. Un-installed. Re-installed. Tried clicking "ignore" but that didn't work either. Same error message every time.

I give up. That's enough time wasted. I have just purchased the upgrade to X2 Studio in the hope that when it comes, it will provide a full and complete installation from scratch that will work.

    Here's the error message:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\NullProxy.dll
Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0xC0000005.
Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation

I am also getting the same error.  I can reproduce easily by simply opening up a cmd shell (run as administrator) and typing the command:

    regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\NullProxy.dll"

This produces a hard crash of the regsvr32 utility and reproduces the exact same dialog I got during the installation, with identical Problem signature:

      Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
      Application Name: regsvr32.exe
      Application Version: 6.1.7600.16385
      Application Timestamp: 4a5bcdd6
      Fault Module Name: nvd3d9wrapx.dll
      Fault Module Version: 8.17.12.9688
      Fault Module Timestamp: 4fc7b111
      Exception Code: c0000005
      Exception Offset: 000000000000214f
      OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
      Locale ID: 1033

It appears that there is something in the NullProxy.dll that the Windows 7 registry service is puking on.

I also found references in another thread about a possible collision with a Windows Logo Verification program (or something like that). The resolution was to uninstall that application, but I do not have that on my system.  My system is completely new, with a fully updated copy of Windows 7.

Any other ideas?  I am all ears.

OK. Sorry for the stupid last paragraph ... the reference was from the post up at the top.

After all of the issues with the registry service failing on install I went ahead and just started SONAR up and it seemed to be fine. I then installed the 8.3.1 update, and after failing with the same error again saw that the version updated and the program still seems to work.

There is definitely still a bug out there, but I'm operational now.
