SONAR X1 Producer, Can't Record?!

I just upgraded to SONAR X1 Producer. I have an Aardvark Q10 (yes, I know it's old) and it has worked fine all through SONAR 8.5. However, I can now playback projects, or previously recorded audio, but I can not record. I can get sound through the Q10, but SONAR does not seem to accept the audio. No meter movements, in fact, they look grayed out. I am using the ASIO driver and I have used the X1a hotfix but that hasn't worked. The other weird problem is the browser, it won't preview the audio. The button shows it is playing but there is no sound. It also looks like there is some cpu usage while it's playing but no sound! I have selected all the input/outputs in the driver section and I am keeping the projects at 16/44.1. I am also unable to run the demo projects, they stutter and drop out, but that's no big deal. But maybe it's all related. If anyone has ideas, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you

I had a similar problem with my E-Mu 1820m.  From what I recall it had to do with the Khz.  Make sure all the Khz and bit settings on the sound card and in the project are the same.

Thanks, I will double check the settings but I believe they are all the same, except that the Render bit rate is 32bit. Could that be it? Everything else should be 16bit, 44.1.

    Thanks

I had two Q10s a while back. I remember Aardvark had their own low latency mme driver that replaces the standard mme driver and performs the same as ASIO. I think that's what I used to use. I can't remember if I used ASIO or not but you could try MME as the driver mode. If you do change to MME just remember to make sure no other drivers are selected on the drivers tab. But if you where using ASIO with 8.5 then not sure why it's not working with X1.

I had a weird MIDI recording problem a couple of days ago... I was able to ARM a midi track and record some MIDI data off my keyboard controller.

I created a clip I wanted to replace and deleted it... all fine so far... then went to ARM the midi track again for recording and NO GO.

At first I thought it was me but after checking everything I could think of, I quit X! and restarted and reloaded the project and I was able to record the replacement MIDI performance.

    Go figure.

    Jim

PS - that was the first and only time that has happened to me.  No big deal really other than it was OT in mentioned unable to record.

sounds like you need to check out the manual a little bit.(saying that in a positive way.)have you routed the browser to your master output??click on the arrow next to the folder in the browser under output options chose master ..the rest you ll figure out.its all about routing man..good luck

I saw something about that after I posted about the browser, but when I was poking around earlier, I didn't see that option. I'll have to start digging deeper, thanks!

great to hear..now your record problem..you know you got sound coming in threw your interface right??..so go to the track you want to record on..click record.(MAKE SURE IT IS A MIDI TRACK FOR MIDI,AN AUDIO TRACK FOR AUDIO)sprry had to say it..now hit record.and also very important, next to the record button theres a button for echo input, click that as well.you should now be ready to record unless your routing isnt set up..your input should be set to your interface your output set to your master(for basic recording..)this is just a guide to get you rolling and test sound..see what you get..g/l

I believe I have the routing set up and click the Record Arm button and Echo input. What's weird is I get sound through the interface going to the mixer feeding my speakers but SONAR isn't registering any activity. It records silence. I did open an old project from SONAR 8.5 which had all the correct routing and it does the same thing, just does not register input. Now one thing I forgot to mention is that this is a "newer" machine with specs that fit X1 and has a dual core processor. Has anyone had issues with moving from a single core processor to a dual and interfaces not working right?

What is your System Specs & Operating System and what are all your settings at on both? Record/Playback I/O buffers, bit rates etc...I see you changed computers, has all updates been checked for all cards and as stated earlier, make sure settings havent changed-Q10 should match X1's.   Im not a techy but have gained a lil bit here.

well now it sounds like your interface then..do you have a mix control on the interface??dont worry youll get it,its not a processor issue..lol..you should set up your signiture in your profile..edit your profile and put your specs in it(system, interface, daw??)this will help alot..its hard to pin point when we dont know exactly what your running..matter of fact im not even sure if your running on windows 7,32x or 64..on your interface turn the latency mix knob all the way to one side and check..then vice versa.if its both x1 and 8.5.3 then chances are its your interface settings.did you set it up in the preference menu as well??under drivers select(your interface for in and out)...then open the asio panel.by the way..your meters arent moving at all either...no regester on them??

My signature now includes my specs. I run my card at 16bit, 44.1khz. It can go higher, but I found it ran better on the CD standard settings. X1 is set to 16/44.1 except the render rate is 32. I thought that had to do with the operating system, but should it be 16? When I changed computers, I put a fresh copy of XP SP3 and did all updates before loading X1 and the Q10 drivers (which is in ASIO mode). The buffer levels appear to be set as I cannot change the values, whether inside X1 or the ASIO control panel. I don't remember them being locked before. I used to have a horrible time when trying to use 24bit/48khz settings that SONAR would try to automatically change the ASIO settings and it would get all kinds of messed up. That is why I am only using 16/44.1.

I didn't have a chance to play with it tonight, but I am taking notes and will check all of your suggestions the first chance I get! Oh, there is no mix control on my audio interface. I have zero latency monitoring, it just does it. No mix control like on an Mbox. Now I do have one of those and I am thinking of installing the drivers for that and seeing if I get a different result. I prefer my Q10 as it has 8 analog plus stereo SPDIF channels. It was the first of its kind in 2000 and no new drivers since 2004. Yes, it's old and a beast, but when it works it's awesome! Just usually  has some growing pains. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions!

    Thanks,

Ok, so I started messing around with SONAR, checking all the info everyone has suggested but nothing worked. But I had an idea. A long time ago I had an instance where my inputs from my audio interface were in different locations within SONAR. This time, input 1 was input 9 and input 2 was input 1 in SONAR. I uninstalled the drivers (actually did a system restore to clean the registry) and then reinstalled. When it came back up, it worked! Thanks for all of your advice and I will let you know if I have any other problems! Oh, and I finally figured out how to assign the Browser bus. That was not very intuitive, btw. Ok, now I'm excited to make some music!

    Thanks,

Hey!!!   Glad to hear. Sorry was outa state and just got back in.  My MAudio dose the same but its a known issue within MAudio thats always that way on all their FTUs. (8 Inputs that are labeled 1.3.5.7-Ya have to choose left or right to get the even inputs LOL). Anyway outstanding job and Ill keep your fix in the vault for future reference.  ;)
