SONAR X2 Possibly Intermittent MIDI Recording issue
Hello, Scenario: SONAR X2 Producer x64 on Windows 7 + Alesis Q25 + Frontier Alphatrack Project 'A': Basic audio track + SD3 (All stereo outputs, routed to separate bus) Recorded basic guitar track + drum track - all working fine. Then added TruePianos_64 softsynth; MIDI source + stereo outputs. Configured routing as usual. If I focus on the TruePianos MIDI source track and play my Alesis keyboard I can see MIDI data getting through on the meters and I can hear the desired sound, BUT, when I arm the track and try to record MIDI, nothing gets recorded in the clip pane. Created Test project 'B': TruePianos_64 softsynth; MIDI source + stereo outputs. Configured routing as usual. I can play and record MIDI data from the Alesis with absolutely no problem. I've spent a while comparing project/track/bus settings between the two projects but I simply don't understand what is causing the issue in Project 'A'. Would anyone have any ideas? Thank you Nick

You could try reloading the synth into the rack and setting up a new audio and midi track and see what happens. Perhaps there is some kind of project corruption that is interfering with the normal processing of the existing track/routing settings. You could also try a test using a different synth, in the problem project, again to see if there is some corruption issue in the existing project that is globally affecting synth recording. Just a couple of thoughts there - please give one or both of the above a try and post back. Bob Bone

Thanks Bob Yeah I've just tried both of those suggestions but problem persists unfortunately. Interestingly, I have noticed it does record the very first chord 'stab' on my Alesis but then nothing else.

If you used a different synth and had the same issue, perhaps there really is something wrong with that project file. (it would not appear that your midi routing is incorrect - although you didn't really specify other than as normal) Can you try exporting the earlier recorded tracks as wave files, then import them into your working project B? (or copy those tracks to a brand new project and see if it all works once you then add your TruPianos). Also, are you sure there is nothing recorded? Check the event list view for midi events for that device. Perhaps your picture cache needs deleting. (Sonar will recreate it for you). Sometimes waveform drawing stops working for folks, and deleting the picture cache solves that issue. Please review the above and post back. Bob Bone

So, I've just created a new project, opened the same track templates and exported/imported the audio and midi, added the TruePianos synth and now everything is working perfectly now. It's really odd. I can only think that you are correct in that some sort of project corruption must have occurred at some stage, though to be honest it isn't a particularly large project. The other thing I did try during my own troubleshooting yesterday was to install the X2a update, but that didn't seem to have any effect on the 'corrupted' project. Having said that, perhaps now that I've created a new project under X2a it will stabilise. I couldn't see any MIDI event data in the project track that I was working with in the old project. I'm not sure we'll find a definitive answer for this, but fingers crossed, everything will settle down now. Bob, thanks very much for your help. Nick

Did you have any Punch Points in your original project? They would be visible as little red triangles above your timeline. They would be spaced really close together if you can record the first chord but nothing else

@bristol_journey - a fine question there. To the original poster - glad it is working for you now. The X2a update fixed something like 250 bugs, so well worth doing in any case. Bob Bone

Oh :-) HaHa! @bristol_journey, you're absolutely spot on. I did indeed have a Punch Point of zero time right at the start that went completely un-noticed. And, yes it did fix the issue. School-Boy error. Sorry guys for the trouble, but thank you both for the help!

This has bitten me a couple of times. Glad it was a simple fix. Oh, and that's Bristol_ Jonesey, not Journey

Sorry - only a single cup of coffee in me at the time, and I couldn't be bothered to scroll up the screen to double-check your user name. I was also on the phone with someone from South Africa at the time, and trying to finish my post so I could devote what little of my brain came online this morning to assisting him. I fear that laziness abounds in me today - yikes, and apologies. Bob Bone
