SONAR X3 Won't Start! Stays in task manager

I'm using windows 7, I had Sonar 8 installed and it's updates. Last week I installed Sonar X3 producer. I had this problem that I could open a virtual synth, and if the track had midi data in it, the soft would play it, but then if I play the keyboard nothing happened, no sound would come out. So I played around a little with the configurations and stuff, changed the asio and wdm and all that. But the other day I double clicked on the icon and it never started. It looks like it's gonna open but it never happens. Then I open the task manager, and it is right there. So I end the process and I repeat the procedure, and nothing changes. I tried installing the update, same problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled everything, same problem.
Any ideas would be immensely appreciated!

There are some times when this will happen. You need to kill it in Task Manager to get it to start next time. To remedy this, is to uninstall, reboot, and re-install. I'm not sure what the cause is. Has anyone in Windows7-32-bit or Windows 8 experienced this?

In the past it was due to a MIDI or audio device driver not letting go of the connection. Sonar wont shut down because its waiting for the driver release.

Thanx 4 the replies!
Brian: My problem is that I kill SONARPDR.EXE in the task manager and when I try again, the problem persists. It never starts. I've already uninstalled and reinstalled the software...

This is very strange, because it doesn't happen with Sonar 8. Does this mean I will never be able to use SONAR X3?

This happens to me on certain crashes. Ever since I got the Octa-Capture it happens more often.

Powering down the audio interface usually frees the process so it can be killed. So that would be:
  • power down audio interface
  • kill sonarpdr in task manager
  • power up audio interface
  • try opening SONAR again
Most times this works. Sometimes SONAR will refuse to see the audio interface on reboot, in which case a system restart is needed.

Sometimes drivers/programs hang and a cold reboot will reset the system.

Hi Marcelo,
I had this happen many times exactly as you describe.
If you are running a multi-core processor,
try this and see how it works.
When running SONAR: In the Task Manager click the Details tab.
Locate SONAR, it may say SONARPDR.exe.
Right click, choose Select affinity, untick CPU 0
This frees up the main core for Windows as
I believe the other cores are for multitasking.
In a dual processor mobo repeat the same for the other processor.
Sometimes the SONAR glitch will timeout allowing SONAR to restart.
It also helps to restart the computer after a while of work.
When SONAR is running correctly,
the keyboard should work okay with the box ticked in
Edit-Preferences-Midi-Devices and then Midi Track Input.
Of course the SONAR glitch will stop the audio and midi.
You can also try this;
When running SONAR: In the Task Manager click the Details tab.
Locate SONAR, Right click, choose Select Set priority, select
Below normal or Low. This frees up some of the CPU demand.
SONAR meter may indicate ok but Windows and the computer
will still benefit. Any method that frees up resources is good.
If you are running 64 bit SONAR, another thing you can try is
placing the 32 bit VST folders containing their 32 bit dll into the
x64 Windows Cakewalk VST plugins folder. Windows and SONAR
will use them at that location just fine. Simply Scan VST plugins and voila!
In SONAR an x86 Cakewalk folder is only necessary to run SONAR in 32 bit.
Hope all this helps. I also have a working solution for the Bitbridge issue.

Good Luck.
David

Well, I've tried all of the options and none of them seem to work.
With the cold reboot, it works for a while. But then it happens again and I have to do the cold reboot again
I really don't know what to do...

Re: SONAR X3 Won't Start! Stays in task manager 2013/12/21 01:25:52 (permalink)
The next time this happens, look in Task Manager, and see if BitBridge is running.

BitBridge will load and facilitate 32-bit plugins running in 64-bit Sonar.  IF there is an issue with one or more of the 32-bit plugins, quite often Sonar can flake out, and often will leave BitBridge running.

It should eventually flush, OR you can kill BitBridge in Task Manager, OR you can do a cold boot, OR you can go through the process of figuring out which one or more of the 32-bit plugins is having issues running through BitBridge.

Many times, folks will choose to swap out flaky 32-bit plugins for more stable 64-bit equivalent ones.  Other folks will try to use a third-party wrapper, called JBridge, instead of BitBridge, and will see if that makes things run in a more stable fashion.

ALL of the above is based upon a determination that 32-bit plugins are the cause of your issues, so the first thing to do is figure out if any 32-bit plugins are present in any project where this behavior is present.

Please review your failing project(s), and post back on whether or not 32-bit plugins are present in these projects.  I would also ask you to list which ones you come across, from your review.

Thanks,

Bob Bone

I have this happen occasionally and a cold reboot is the only remedy. Fortunately it only occurs infrequently and on reproducible functions which I can then try to avoid. Can you reproduce exactly what causes this to happen, and if so, can you avoid it in your workflow? Sometimes it is a particular set of keyboard strokes, or a certain set of instructions to a synth, or effect, that causes this to occur.

Bob Bone:
Thanx for your advice, but I'm running windows 7 32bit, so there is no bitbridge running. If there is one of the plugins I have in my computer that's causing the problem, do I have some way of figuring it out?
I really don't know what causes this. I just turn the computer on, try to open sonar and I won't open.
I'm having some latency problems with Sonar X3, so eventually I get tired of not being able to fix it. So I switch to Sonar 8. Then sometimes I can open Sonar X3, but most of the time I can't. I have stopped trying to use it because it's pointless. I'm beginning to think this software is a piece of crap

Funnily enough it works for us, so draw your own conclusions ;)
I don't think we know anything about your hardware, are you able to update your footer like mine?
What antivirus are you running, if you are running more than one you shouldn't. Please try removing all antivirus software and trying again. When you are done then reinstall to see if the behaviour persists.

Otherwise
Please run windows update several times
Please update your drivers here: http://forum.cakewalk.com/Driver-Boost-m2928792.aspx
Please make sure your sound interface drivers are up to date.
Run chkdsk on your hard drives.
Rename your AUD.INI

However - I would suggest backing up/wiping your windows partition/reinstalling 64 bit windows, but no sure if your specs are up to it.

Thanks

Alex

I would call Tech support on Monday am!

Please post your specs as Alex suggested,

After a cold start of your system and audio interface, try opening the offending project in Safe mode without any plugins enabled. Reopen your project adding one plugin at a time on each iteration if you are successful in opening SONAR. If this is plugin related, you should be able to pin it down.

You mention X3, do you have any of the updates installed for X3 as well?

Safe mode is a good idea as well.
Yes install X3D

I would go through my steps and others first before you call tech support, they are only going to go through what we've already written, best to exhaust the possibilities first.

TS is going to make him go through and verify all those steps on the phone anyway. Been there done that. They likely have a script to follow and probably have to say that they went through these steps with the customer to pursue additional troubleshooting from DEV.

Doesn't hurt to try what was suggested, but getting TS involved as early as possible will help the bakers keep a finger on the pulse of the users.

Actually they won't go through all the steps, and that's my point, save time on the phone.

The answer to the question is often "Yes I've just done that", and if they insist you do exactly the same again, and you know you've done it... exactly what they say... you pause, make a cup of tea, and then come back and lie.

Always best get to your ducks lined up first before you call support (if you can) otherwise it wastes a lot of time (and your phone bill).

I am not arguing that.

My point is make them feel the issue as early as possible so they can get crackin that much earlier. It is bad enough they have a shortened phone support timeframe. help support earn their paycheck.

Again, I am saying to pay attention to the forum suggestions but get TS involved as early as possible. I am only advocating helping Cakewalk FEEL the pain if a user can't get something working as soon as possible and time permitting.
and the issues will be documented and not just floating in a forum somewhere.

Hello you all!
My first post here from memory.... since the News Group time :)

From readings made on some forums, it is an old problem for Cakewalk users. Some have had this issue as far as Pro Audio 8, on 32 bits systems as well. On my side, I just migrated from X2 to X3. I had this behavior with all the Sonar incarnations, 32 and 64 installs and X3 does not solve this annoying thing. Moreover, I observed that sometimes, with big projects, I had up to 4 instances of Bitbridge left opened in Task Manager on X2. After loading one on X3d, I am at the same point. I have to close them to have my Dakota/Montana/Sierra rig available and re-open Sonar. Hopefully, I have a stable, optimised/trimmed system that does not crash often, but I'd like to get the final word on this issue... It appears to be happening to many people with different setups, big or small. I am pretty sure it is common to many users that do not dig enough to get a clue about it. It is my understanding that Cakewalk tech staff is aware of this, but I wonder why there is no one of them posting a check list to help...

It's worth noting there's two problems here: one is a VST problem with the plugin and it's crashing SONAR. Two is the locked driver and needing to cold boot to release it.

I'm getting tons of these in an old project I just opened in X3. Since it's Amplitube2 that's causing the ruckus I'm slowly trying to emulate the patches in TH2 so I can migrate away from the trouble. Of course, the labor loss is terrible. I swear after this album I'm going to do as many projects with the included plugs as possible.

Per John and Wicked ...

My audio-interface is oft the culprit.  Octa-capture especially (even with latest drivers) ...

Rebooting that audio-interface TWICE fixes my task-manager issues with X3d (and all the other Sonars).

HI. You might try, before going the reinstall sonar route, COMPLETELY removing all reference to your interface in windows including the registry. I don't believe you should have to reboot/log off to free sonar unless your audio interface drivers are fried. Used to happen to me with X1 and echo audio drivers.

If you do reinstall sonar be sure to use the "run as administrator" option.

...wicked
This happens to me on certain crashes. Ever since I got the Octa-Capture it happens more often.

Powering down the audio interface usually frees the process so it can be killed. So that would be:
  • power down audio interface
  • kill sonarpdr in task manager
  • power up audio interface
  • try opening SONAR again
Most times this works. Sometimes SONAR will refuse to see the audio interface on reboot, in which case a system restart is needed.

Is the OP able to shut down his "unknown" audio interface? On my machine I can't, I have to shut down the computer to shutdown the audio interfaces (2xM-Audio Delta1010)

I'm having almost exactly the same problem. And i'm on windows 8, so yes, I don't believe it's a windows issue. If I use ASIO as my driver sonar refuses to work.  If I use wdkms it works, but locks as soon as I stop the track. This all started when I bought a focusrite interface. I was using a lexicon interface, which worked fine with sonar 8, but X3 refused to recognise it as a midi driver.  Given lexicon no longer supported this product i decided to upgrade. To be honest, I'm pretty much at the end of my rope with X3. I am NOT even remotely interested in going through many of the processes listed on here.  Sonar need to make a program that simply works once installed (with maybe a few tweaks).  I've never used any daw but sonar, and up until about 4 months ago i used 8 without any dramas (apart from the usual sonar instability).  Since changing to x3 it's been a constant nightmare. I HATE what they've done with the selection tool, which constantly has me searching the online manuals for how to do the most basic of processes, and it's just miles too glitchy. I'll download the updates today and try them, but if they don't fix the problem I'm done.  Really annoys me, as this is not a cheap program, and i loved sonar 5 and 8, they were so user friendly.  For years the customer base has been asking sonar for nothing but a more stable program, and here, it appears they've released the most unstable version yet.  STOP with adding plug ins etc, and just MAKE IT STABLE.  Was at a friends place the other day and he was using a daw i've never even heard and it didn't crash, glitch, or lock up once, and he knows next to nothing about daws, he simply installed it and ran it.  And it works.  Is that really so hard SONAR?

OP, if you haven't already, take a few minutes and uninstall/reinstall your audio interface drivers/software. These hangs are almost always a resolute of the audio driver acting weird. On my system the new Realplayer cloud app causes sonar to not load so I can't let realplayer update itself.
