SONAR changes Windows 10 playback sample rates

I just installed Platinum.  I have SONAR projects in both 44.1 and 48kHz sample rates. I'm having problems where if I play the 48kHz projects in SONAR, I cannot subsequently play the 44.1kHz projects in SONAR, and vice versa if I open SONAR and play a 44.1kHz project first. (I get a SONAR error that the audio format is not supported or the drivers are in use by another app - both assertions are untrue).

After extensive investigation, I found that opening SONAR causes the Windows 10 playback sample rates to be changed (right-click on volume icon on task bar, select "Playback devices", click on Speakers, select Properties, click Advanced tab, open Default Format pulldown menu to display all supported formats). My USB sound card is Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 which supports 16 and 24-bit modes and both of them at sample rates between 44.1 and 96kHz. Before opening SONAR, when I look at the Windows playback sample rates, all the Focusrite-supported sample rates are displayed in the pulldown menu. After I open SONAR, the only 2 sample rates displayed in the pulldown menu are 16 and 24-bit and only at 44.1kHz. And then when I close SONAR, all the supported sample rates come back.

How do I prevent SONAR from altering the options in the Windows pulldown menu so I can play both 44.1 and 48kHz projects (and audio files outside of SONAR)?  Thanks.

UPDATE - Now it seems that after I exit SONAR, the Focusrite-supported playback sample rates are NOT restored. Right now, only the two 44.1kHz options are available. SO now I need to figure out a methodology for restoring all the supported sample rates, probably by reinstalling the sound card drivers. There has to be a better way.

UPDATE 2 - I think I found a workaround based on a recommendation Scott Garrigus (sp?) made in a post I found from several years ago. I enabled the on-board sound module and let Windows take exclusive control over it.  Now it seems I can play both 44.1 and 48kHz projects in SONAR. However, in order to play audio files outside of SONAR that are say 44.1 kHz sample rates, the last SONAR project I load must be 44.1kHz.  Totally stupid.  There has to be a better way.  NEVER MIND - This worked only once.  Sigh.

Open Sonar, select Preferences>Audio>Driver Settings, under Default settings for new projects Select  your default Sample Rate for new projects.

I have that set at 48k, but doing that does not solve my problem of being able to play the 44.1k projects.

This is a general problem with USB-drivers from some manufacturer.
I have SONAR installed on a few computers.
RME (PCI and Firewire) do not make any problems.
I have also Focusrite and Roland as USB-Devices which make similar problems.

We digitize tapes, vinyl, dat, md ... in broadcast and studio quality for publishers, public institutions and individuals.

Which driver mode are you using in SONAR?
Both WDM and WASAPI use exclusive mode. This means that while SONAR is using the audio device, other apps do not have access to it. However even in exclusive mode normally you should be able to switch between multiple projects at different sample rates. You should be able to verify this by using your onboard audio device instead.

If its not working properly it seems like a limitation of the driver itself. I would contact the driver vendor to investigate further. However you should use ASIO instead if the vendor has an ASIO driver since they are better supported.

Noel.. I'm using ASIO mode. I'll see what Focusrite support says.

i have projects in both 44 and 48. i have to set my m-audio device to the # i want before i start sonar. otherwise i get the error message. if i want to go from a 44 project to a 48 project i have to close sonar, change the # in the m-audio app, then restart sonar.

sonar can only work with one sample rate at a time, and it cannot change the hardware settings. if the hardware is set to 44, i can open 44 projects; set to 48, 48 projects.

Re: SONAR changes Windows 10 playback sample rates 2016/02/22 12:27:50 (permalink)
A tech person at Focusrite spent well over an hour with me on this issue. We found several "unfortunate" issues such as if I play a 48k song in Sonar, while Sonar is open, I cannot play any songs using Windows Media Player, but I can use Media Player if I play a 44.1 song in Sonar.

At the heart of the problem seems to be that although Sonar changes the sample rate in Windows according to the sample rate of the song loaded in Sonar, Windows does not set the sample rate for other applications. One has to change the sample rate MANUALLY in order to use other apps that play audio. One does that by right-clicking on the volume icon, selecting "Playback devices", highlighting the sound card, selecting "Properties", clicking the "Advanced" tab, and selecting the appropriate bit and sample rates for the audio one wants to play in apps outside Sonar. I'm a programmer so I'll probably write a program to do that. What a pain !

The Focusrite person said they'll open a ticket to investigate this issue further.

Re: SONAR changes Windows 10 playback sample rates 2016/02/24 18:18:41 (permalink)
This is getting annoying and frustrating. I just opened SONAR, loaded a 48kHz project and SONAR won't play it:

"Unable to open audio playback device. Device may not support the current project's audio format" (not true) "or may be in use" (not true - all other apps are closed).

What the heck can I do to overcome this issue?  I exited SONAR and then looked in the Windows Sounds playback panel, and on the Advanced tab the pulldown menu displays only 2 options: 16-bit @ 44.1kHz and 24-bit @ 44.1kHz. The Scarlett 6i6 supports 16 and 24-bit audio and 44.1-96kHz sample rates.  I'm at my wits end with this.  Anybody?

I can play a 48kHz audio file in Windows Media Player, but doing so doesn't do anything for SONAR.

UPDATE: I found this on the web. Substitute SONAR for whatever "11R" is and it is a workaround.

I just got the 11R, and hooked it all up and began exploring. I played around with the presets, and then went to record. I had created a session in PT 10, using my other interface, set at 48.8K.
It would not open! It gave me a generic message about sampling rate, and how it could not open the session. The sampling rate in PT was grayed out, so I began investigating. Here is what I found:

It seems that the windows drivers (up-to-date latest drivers) are completely functional, but in accessing playback and recording devices the only option was 16/44.1, 24/44.1,32/44.1
This could not be changed to 48.8K through this control panel
I then used the 11R control panel app, but the sampling rate was locked there also. I attempted different methods found on this and other forums, until I finally found the solution. Here it is -

*make sure the 11R is connected to the system and powered on throughout this procedure.

1. Open the windows audio window, (right click the little speaker icon in the lower right tray), select "playback devices"

2. a new window pops up, listing all the current audio devices attached to the system. Right-click on all of the 11R entries and choose "disable". While you are doing this, the popup menu that allows
you to disable the devices also has an entry to show the disabled devices, and you will want to have this checked, as you will be enabling them once you set the new sample rate.

3. Switch over to "recording devices", and disable all the 11R entries, making sure that "show disabled devices is checked. You should still see the I/O of the 11R, but they should all be disabled.

4. Open the 11R utility in Control Panel. If you followed these steps and disabled all 11R I/O, you will now be able to change the sample rate through this utility.

5. Go back into "playback devices/recording devices", and enable all I/O. You should now have the desired sampling rate set. Close the windows, it's time to get back to recording!
