SONAR crashes (solved!)

I have occasional catastrophic crashes of SPlat, once in awhile blue screen. I have noted this happening during intensive use of Melodyne. Going from clip to clip I'll open one and *crash!* Also crash rarely opening VST's (did once on Addictive Drummer.) What have been your crash experiences? MOST importantly, will BandLab address this behavior? Meng?

BTW: I always reboot after a crash to clear things out.

Yep lots of people have seen Melodyne related crashes. I think it's problems with the ARA implementation. Personally I've had projects that have become very unstable to the point of crashing all the time, especially when doing things like inserting or deleting time, and things became better once I deleted all Melodyne clips (or bounced them).

Hi. As James, I always bounce down Melodyne clips when finished editing.
Blue screen however is often HW related.
Have you done any tests to check that you don't have a HW problem? Hard-drive, RAM etc.
All the best.

Hardware seems OK, Zargg. I always render Melodyne clips when I'm done tinkerin', Sharke.

I know you probably don't want to hear it but..
I would look no further than your "Echo Layla24 " as the root of your problem.

A good read:

Melodyne has been solid here. I don't even think I've ever had a Melodyne related crash, but I always render a clip as soon as im done editing it in Melodyne.

There is a bug however, when using Region FX and the transport is rolling that is driving me bananas.
Seriously though, obsolete soundcard, bluescreen, crashes = try a different soundcard.
Heck even do a small test, remove the soundcard and use MME or WASAPI and see if Melodyne crashes.
Sonar uses resources for Melodyne.

Wowsers, Chuckebaby! That was quite a thread on the Layla... Beepster wrote:

"There are still MOBOs on the market with PCI but you have to make sure that the legacy PCI slot is Native not Bridged support otherwise the data is being handled by the PCIe chipset which can choke things up... which is why I ended up buying a new interface."

That could be the issue! How do I check if I have Native or Bridged PCI?

Anyhoo... the Layla IS a bit long in the tooth. I don't want USB because I can only get 2 X 4. Layla is 8 X 8 and I need to match that. That leaves me Firewire or Thunderbolt... but I'd need to get a card for either. PCIe? THEN I'd need to find an interface I can afford, preferably used. <sigh>

ALL suggestions welcome!

RME, Motu, Focusrite, Presonus (and probably several more) can give you that over USB.
I've got a RME Ucx that I've had for 2 years (in a few months9 and can recommend it with all my heart.
I replaced an Echo AudioFire 8 with the RME. The Echo was good, but the RME is excellent.
Low RTL, super stable drivers, and great legacy support.

To add. I can record with 64 samples buffer, giving me approx 3-4 ms RTL (Round Trip Latency).

Hey Zargg, I just can't afford an RME... too pricey. Yes, I see I was totally wrong about USB, I can do 8 X 8. I've looked at these so far:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Focusrite/18i20-Audio-Interface-114015517.gc

I know the Focusrite is good, what about the Tascam? Thoughts?

Still looking...

I use a Tascam us1641  which they updated the drivers for in 2014 and it performs equally as well as my Focusrite 6i6. No difference. I open projects on the 2 systems daily and the projects work without any hiccups, all outputs remain the same because both are identical in that regard. The newer Tascams are the best bang for the buck if you need channel count.
If RTL is an issue for you as in using Guitar sims you would need to upgrade to a RME.

Another thing of note is that the number of "Undo histories" you have will consume RAM, and that is set to 128 by default. In order to change it (ironically), you need to first make a change to a project, then Edit->History... (3rd option down). At the bottom of that popup is a "Maximum Undo Levels." Set that to a reasonable number (I use 10). You can also manually clear the undo history there (your Melodyne usage is also stored here, so even bouncing only does so much... something to bear in mind if you are a heavy Melodyne user (there is no rehab for this yet)).

Using small Melodyne Region FX, bouncing Melodyne edits promptly, saving the cwp fairly often, and minimizing (or even clearing) undo history will alleviate a lot of the overhead that SONAR is dealing with in the background as you are editing with Melodyne.

Both Tascam and Focusrite makes good products.
I don't think you will go wrong either way.
Don't forget to look 2nd hand. Can save a lot of money that way, and most AI's are well built these days.

When was the last time you did a bios update ?
Could also be a failed install of drivers on the PCI itself, a bad registry entry, could be many things.

For whatever the worth, I have a Presonus AudioBox 1818VSL USB interface that has 8 mic pre's and decent performance, and there is an older but still pretty nice expansion unit that connects to it via ADAT (Light Pipe) cables, and that gives you an additional 8 inputs, and it all still works quite well with the USB connection to my computer.

Both of the above can be found used - I don't have a price on the above interface (used), but I picked up a used one of those expansion units (also from Presonus) for $120, and it runs perfectly.  The current brand new price for the Presonus AudioBox 1818 VSL audio interface seems to be $399, so used should be pretty reasonable, as well.

Great tip, Bob! I found new for $400, refurb for $320, used for $300. I could not find the expansion unit... do you have a model num for that puppy?

This recent thread (last week!) from another Layla user might be worth a look:

In fact, I thought it was you at first, because of the Layla.  Echo made great cards back in the day (In popularity, they were probably second only to M-Audio among CW users).  I used to own a Gina 3G, but sold it when I got a system with the aforementioned bridged PCI slot.

Re: SONAR crashes 2018/03/03 10:58:04 (permalink)
I wanna give a huge thank you to all you guys for tips and encouragement. Y'all have pointed me in directions that yielded super stability in my SPlat! To wit...

I have a prog monster that I am currently working on named "Pleasant Dreams." It is 25:30 and 128 tracks long. I just spent all night (yep, night owl) Melodyne-ing through all the scratch vocals which include melody & harms. SPlat never once choked or threw an error. I kept the project open all that time (frequently saving) and then I went back and recorded automation for Vocal Rider. In the midst of this I had my Internet connection up and would occasionally take a peek at Facebook. I also had Outlook open checking e-mail. The Project is still open now and is purring contentedly.

I credit a cuppla things... one tip to limit my undo history to 10 was great (I forget who gave it.) Another discussion about the PCI bus prompted me to uninstall the PCI bus from Device Manager, reboot, then let it reinstall everything. (It was a *bunch!* There are a ton of dependencies on the PCI bus on my mobo.) When all was back in, Device Manager looked totally clean (except that one nagging aforementioned ish, but it didn't matter!) I then brought up SPlat and did aforementioned operation.

It looks like my Layla 24 is performing perfectly. No hiccups or errors at all. Mebbe I don't need a new audio interface after all.

Another thing is the Internet connection. I keep it up all the time. Tried turning it off but no diff in SPlat (which is central reason for this machine.) I also have a virus scanner running *but* have made exceptions for all SONAR files and processes. Methinks that all the terror over being on the 'net with a DAW is a tempest in a teapot. My current experience shows that it doesn't matter. I may be in a minority over this but I calls it like I sees it!

Please feel free to discuss my findings. Again, a *huge* thank you to y'all who spurred me on! Pleasant Dreams!

Yours With a Song,

I just worked on another 10:45 tune comping 8 trax of a friend's *blazing* Viper electric violin down to one. Flawless performance and I still have not shut down SONAR from "Pleasant Dreams." I think I've got the stability thing licked! SONAR has been running 8-9 hours with no crash...
