SONAR refuses to record automation?

Hi all,

I have a weird problem in Sonar X1 Producer where I'm unable to record automation.  Here is a detailed description of the behavior I'm experiencing:

In a new project I've created a new track with the Cakewalk SI-String Section VSTi.  (both the Midi Source + the First Synth Audio Output tracks)  Everything good so far.

I've used ACT to map the "Attack" knob of the VST to a knob on my MIDI control surface.  All good there, knob moves as expected.

Here's where the problem comes in... I've hit the automation write "W" on both Midi Source + First Synth Audio Output tracks, AND the "W" in the top-right corner of the VST window itself.  Here's the problem: When I record, as soon as the intro measure finishes clicking off and the vertical time-line starts moving, ALL THE RED Ws TURN OFF (grey out).  (They turn back on as soon as recording/playback stops.)  I assume that the whole point is that I want the knob movements to be captured as part of the recording, and I believe that I'm (at least mostly) doing what I'm supposed to in order to make that happen.

The "Enable/Bypass Read Automation" button on the top toolbar is highlighted, FYI.

I've tried all of the above with slightly different variations of buttons selected/deselected to no avail.

It may be worth saying that the knob DOES move during playback/recording... but the changes don't get recorded and during subsequent playback it always stays on the last position I've manually moved it to.

For this problem I've chosen a VST that is produced by Cakewalk (SI-String Section) so as to remove any speculation about 3rd party components, etc.... so I'm hoping someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong.  I'm sure it's something simple.

Thanks!!!!!

I think what you need to do is

1 - Undock the browser window (the window with the Synth Rack in it).  This reveals two controls that are invisible when the window is docked.

2 - Use the Show/Hide Assign Controls button to show the control assignments under the synth.

3 - Now use the Assign Controls button under your synth in the synth rack (in a fashion similar to the way you used  ACT Learn to link controls with your midi controller) to assign controls to the synth.  I.e., push the Assign Controls button, rotate the knob on the synth display using the mouse, then push the Assign Controls button again.  You'll get a dialog similar to the one that ACT uses saying something like "One parameters were touched during Learn.  Do you want to keep this assignment?"  Say Yes and a new control will appear under your synth in the synth rack.  (You can optionally link this control to your midi controller, too.)

4 - Right-click the new control.  The context menu has options for Automation Read, Write and Snapshot.  Use these to capture automation on the synth.  The automation envelope, by the way, will be written to the synth track, not the midi track that's controlling the synth.

Hope all that makes sense and that it addresses your question.
