SONAR services...what to kill when SONAR crashes?
As I work through a slew of older projects, I get quite a few that will hang my OctaCapture. SONARPDR.exe can be killed by cycling the interface power, but sometimes SONAR won't recognize it when I restart it, and a full system boot is needed. Is there any way around this? Having to power cycle every time I go on a bug hunt gets a little old.

I can get it to crash all the time... It has a problem closing if I use my (free) SpinnerLE (32 bit) Leslie Simulator... Which I use a lot as I can't afford to buy anything... And it sounds pretty good for growl and decent for spin... I use my Kurzweil K2500RS as I love it's KB3 mode... Which does have a spin fx, but not as compelling as SpinnerLE which really gives a good growl with control... ;-)
Have you checked to see if a plugin is causing the trouble?

Have you tried doing a Windows log off / log back on ? It works for "most" of my occasional hangups, and is faster than the full re-boot.

Is BitBridge or JBridge running when things hang? If so, perhaps nuking whichever of those is running would free things up. Bob Bone

sonarpdr.exe is, AFAIK, the only process SONAR launches. You can, however, have difficulty killing it. If that happens, it's most likely the audio interface's fault, and it can be either hardware (typically the USB port on either end) or the driver. If SONAR actually crashes, the dump file can usually identify the faulting module and will say if it's the driver or not. Make sure your USB ports are configured to never power down, as that can cause some interfaces to go to sleep and not wake up without a reboot.

Thanks for the tip, USB ports changed to never power down! Here's what I recall the process being for finding the minidump file, please correct if I'm wrong! users/*me*/AppData/Roaming/Cakewalk/SONAR X3 Producer/MiniDumps (is that right?) I don't have any recent files, everything here is from January. So, next question, how do you read these things? I open it in Notepad and unsurprisingly it's all gibberish with a few recognizable words in them. Is there a section of this that breaks it down in, er, English?

+1 to Bit's analysis. If you have a crash, kill in Windows then for hardware, try powering down the USB (or, shock, firewire device), and re-boot. That should put things back into order. However, I would venture you have a software problem which is not probably Sonar's. Software updates all round. jBridge update if necessary. Change 32 bit for 64 bit plugs etc. Or, at your risk, delete all USB hubs, re-boot with nothing connected (mouse, keyboard excepted) then reboot again and after plug in your devices one by one then let Windows re-recognise them and re-install all USB software. PITA, I know, but for Firewire it works. So why not USB ? Cheers, Jerry

You're limited as to what you can glean from the dump file, but some useful information can be had. You'll first need a program that can decipher the dump. The standard tool is WinDbg, which you can download from Microsoft for free. Open the dump file, and the program will immediately display some information about it. At the bottom of that initial listing you'll find the first piece of useful information: the type of fault that occurred. More often than not, it'll be an access violation (0xc0000005), in which case you can assume that the problem is a bug in either SONAR or in a plugin, and you'll have to take it up with the vendor. Next step is to determine if it's a plugin, and if so, which one - so you'll know who to complain to. Type "!analyze -v" in the command window at the bottom. Give it a minute or two to process the dump. It'll complain about the lack of symbol files, but ignore that. After it's done, scroll to the bottom and you'll see the name of the faulting module. Look for a line that reads "MODULE_NAME". It might be the name of your video driver, your audio driver, a Windows module, SONAR itself, or a plugin. If it's a plugin, the file name will be labeled "IMAGE_NAME", as shown in the example below. If the faulting module is sonarpdr.exe, you won't be able to determine much more than that, because you need a symbol table to correlate addresses to functions within the executable. If the fault originated in SONAR, it's best to send the dump to Cakewalk, where they'll have the required symbol file. If it's a plugin, send the dump to the plugin vendor, who will have the required symbols for their DLL needed to determine where in their code the problem originated. Here's an example: TACK_COMMAND: ~0s; .ecxr ; kb SYMBOL_STACK_INDEX: 0 SYMBOL_NAME: BarkOfDog_x86+6b25 FOLLOWUP_NAME: MachineOwner MODULE_NAME: BarkOfDog_x86 IMAGE_NAME: BarkOfDog_x86.dll DEBUG_FLR_IMAGE_TIMESTAMP: 51e4d41c FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: INVALID_POINTER_READ_c0000005_BarkOfDog_x86.dll!Unknown BUCKET_ID: APPLICATION_FAULT_INVALID_POINTER_READ_BarkOfDog_x86+6b25 I've bolded the most-significant bits of information, which show that the error occurred in a plugin called BarkOfDog_x86.dll and that it was an access violation (INVALID_POINTER_READ_c0000005). The line labeled "SYMBOL_NAME" would show the actual function name within the DLL if you had the symbol file, but only the vendor will have that. That's why it's helpful to send the crash dump to the vendor. BTW, this particular crash happened with an early version of Bark of Dog, a bass-boost plugin. Such occurrences are commonplace when you're beta-testing or running a 1.0 version of a new plugin.

Thanks Bit, I'll try that program! I Googled how to read dump files some time ago and couldn't find a reader, good to know there is one. -1 points for those who suggested things I already discounted in my description. no jbridge, 32-bit, and no, power cycling the audio interface does not solve the problem. It allows SONARPDR.exe to close, but on restart SONAR will NOT recognize the interface unless I cold boot.

Very sorry you are fighting this issue. I am wondering, once Sonar crashes, and actually also during hang, does Windows still show your USB drivers loaded in Device Manager, for your OctaCapture? I recall some flaky issues where some USB-connected devices get themselves or Windows confused if they have either gone to sleep, been affected by Windows Selective Suspension, or that sort of thing. Quick question - not related to the loss of the interface being detected, but just on the crashes when loading certain older projects. Do these failing projects load in Safe Mode in Sonar, with no plugins loading? (you can tell Sonar to skip loading up plugins during Safe Mode launch). I am just wondering if that would help in the analysis of the issues. If these projects load in Safe Mode with no plugins, but fail when loading normally, then you could take one of these projects and load in Safe Mode - allowing it to load a single plugin at a time, until you get to one that fails. Then load again in Safe Mode, get to that point again, skip the load of the failing plugin, then continue loading one at a time past that, to make sure others are also not failing. The above would be a GIANT pain in the back porch, but it might be a way to come up with a list of which plugins don't work anymore for some reason in Sonar. Bob Bone

Yeah - I didn't mean that it would/should fix the issue, only that Windows itself will release the drivers. My explanation was in response to another poster's comment about disabling it in Device Manager. Nothing so for explains what is happening with Sonar. I have to help someone remotely with some computer issues for a couple of hours, then will circle back to your issue and see if there is anything I can do to help you get this figured out. Bob Bone

I have a Roland V-Studio 700R interface (similar to the Octa-Capture) and I've found that, after a X3 crash, the SONARPRD.EXE process takes about 5 minutes to shutdown on its own after turning off the audio interface. A full reboot is rarely necessary. I recently mentioned this behavior to a Cakewalk support rep and he said that it was the first that he had ever heard of it. -e.B

I know you said that you had the latest drivers, but Roland also has an updated Firmware file for the OctaCapture which solved quite a few issues I had. This latest firmware is required for the OctaCapture to work correctly in Windows 8, if you are ever thinking of upgrading it will be a required update anyway so you may as well update to save any issues in the future. It also adds the function to auto detect your Sampling Rate in Sonar, so you don't have to disconnect and reconnect to change sample rates in different projects.

I have an octa-capture and i notice too that the sonarprd.exe process takes forever to end after Sonar crashes. I do not have the patience to wait 5 minutes so I have always re-booted. Since they fixed the enable-midi out bug, I have not crashed for a long time (yeah!). But while that bug was alive, I experienced the behavior described with sonarprd.exe hanging forever. JR
