SONAR's Mix Recall is absolutly Fantastic . My impresssions using it so far .

Hello all,

I've been  putting SONAR's Mix Recall through a number of different paces for the past few weeks .
I'm very pleased to have Mix Recall as a tool in my sonic tool box

I have discovered a few things over here about Mix Recall that I would like to share with the forum .

I cordially invite anyone who cares to share what they have concerning Mix Recall to jump in ...

At first , my plan was to use Mix Recall primarily to go over some tunes and mix's to experiment with dialing them in ....
I soon abandoned that idea because all my self produced music suffers from a number of major issues ....
The guitar playing is pretty good but the production values exhibit some rather suspicious production values mixed in with a lot of shaky learning curve  "Hey  I don't know what I'm doing type of decisions "...

I soon found out that Mix Recall was gonna give me the opportunity to know first hand for myself what it is like to get a built in Time Machine included in my DAW SONAR SPlat  so I can straighten some of these issues out ...
Yes , that is absolutely true and correct .
SONAR SPlat does indeed have a hidden built in Musical Time Machine ...
I kid you not ...it's called Mix Recall ..

For those who may be asking how did I arrive at this bold statement ?.....it was pretty simple actually ...

As weird and as out there as I may seem to some people on the forum , I happen to embrace my own orbit and the places where my orbit brings me .

I sat down and said to myself once I started learning my way around Mix Recall.....

" What would happen if I treated Mix Recall as if it was exactly like the ghost in Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol "?

Can it be done ? Can I personally know what it is like for myself to see and hear with out a shadow of a doubt in my mind and ears what It would be like to be able to hear my musical past , my musical present and my possible musical future  ?
Can this be done in a way where I can do it safely ? and not even have to worry about messing anything up ?

Do I have the courage to wield Mix Recall as my new musical sword and use this tool with vigorous bold strokes ?
Or am I just gonna punk out and keep putting out some real stink worthy sonic turds

I took a tune and I decided to find out for myself ...
The tune I used suffered from many things , The mix was all over the map in every area ,EQ  frequency's , volumes , poor gain staging for all the tracks and the tracks plugins. A couple of placeholder parts that were in limbo . The master bus had nothing on it .  The songs arrangement itself was in purgatory for some time and not fully evolved .... I was OK with the playing up until that point , yet there was no Gel ....

The first thing I did was to save the tune as a "save as " under a new  different name . Then I created my first scene in Mix Recall
My first scene was to serve 2 purposes .
Purpose 1 was to serve as my present , purpose 2  was it was to serve as my past the moment I created a new mix Recall scene

A couple of things about Mix Recalls features that I found helpful ...
Mix Recall is great for properly gain staging not only the project , it is also a great tool for properly gain staging the individual track effects ....
Using my song I took all the gain trim pots above the Console view of each of my tracks and lowered the gain on them all excluding the master buss ...
Why did I do that ? I did that because no matter how hard I've tried , my tracks are recorded at a safe level with lots of headroom , but even when my track fader's are low I have noticed the gain staging always seems to be off in my Pro Chanel and all my as per track effects .....
I saved that as a new Mix Recall scene , my original first Mix Recall scene has now become my musical Past

Now the real fun begins ....
I decided to go track by track and properly gain stage each and every track effect that i was using ...
my goal was to eliminate the volume discrepancy's of what my plugs were doing to my tracks and mix by conducting a full investigation on each and every plug to determine if I was using it because I thought it sounded good on it's own merit once i properly found the sweet spot of the plug ....or if it was pretending to sound good only because it gave a bump in volume ...
BTW I was super happy to notice that all of a sudden my Pro channel was never clipping any more
Of course I have saved a new scene ...

At this point I decided to try a little experiment ...I asked the question ...
Can Mix Recall recall scenes that not only have changes in the trim pots , track volumes and the things I have done to this point Can Mix Recall store scenes where I have removed track effects or even recall scenes where I have placed totally different track effects in their place .....
I was very happy about what the results were ...Yes ....so obviously i created some new scenes and saved them ...

All throughout this process I had been listening and comparing my new Mix scenes to my first saved Mix scene ...
Every thing was sounding much better ...Mix Recall allowed me to not play it safe any more and just go for it with out the worry of screwing my project up ...
According to my Dickens / Mix Recall Time Machine analogy/ criteria  ..my former present mix became my past and I had multiple variations of much better sounding preset mix's to listen to ...keep in mind I hadn't added new track yet , nor did I even mess with the Master buss yet ...

What about the the future ....I will get there ...it's not time yet

OK, I said to myself , what happens with these place holder tracks or any other tracks I may add to my project .
Can Mix Recall allow me to selectively mute them and save a new scene where I can experiment fleshing them out in a way  I can recall ? YES ......
I actually found that to be pretty cool to be honest considering I'm using Mix Recall to help me track a tune where I can flesh out a better  arrangement than what I had / started with ....

Already I was starting to get a glimmer of hope as to what the future would sound like on this song ...

I decided to focus a lot on creating and using some of SONAR's mastering effects chains on my master bus ...

I asked myself can Mix Recall store various scenes where I try out different effects chains on my master bus ?
Yes,,,,it can and I was very happy to learn that ...now I'm sure a lot of you guys know that ...I'm enjoying my process of discovery ....
Now I have multiple Mix Recall scenes saved where I have various effects chains on my Master buss
Being able to kick back and listen to these various versions of whats on my Master Bus effects chain is a real time saver and treat

Some wheres along the line I had decided to export a mix of my tune and edit the songs arrangement in my Audio editor ...
I went all out Ginsu on it by slicing and dicing the export  in my audio editor to flesh out  a bit , then I imported that arrangement into my project and saved it as a Mix Recall scene ...

This is the point where my footsteps have gotten a little bit of a solid glimpse of the possible future ...
Still working on that part and it seems to be coming along ...
At this point I think that if I had chosen a former project of mine that was super dense with an orchestra and a lot of arrangement variations , I would be very stoked to have the ability to send out very different mixes of some of the various musical sections ..ex orchestra parts solo , combined w band , ect ect meaning any number of possible mix variations ...

I fully realize that there's a lot of things I have yet to learn about using Mix Recall to it's fullest potential  ...
I didn't touch on automation or  a number of many things a lot of you here know ...

This is why I'm starting this thread ...I would Love to hear what you have to say and learn what you can teach me

Does SONAR actually  have a Hidden Built Musical Time Machine in Mix Recall  ?

I know what my answer is ..what do you think ..does it ? ....

all the best,

Kenny

Oh Yeah , Life is Good .
The internet is nothing more than a glorified real time cartoon we all star in.
I play a "Gibson " R 8 Les Paul Cherry Sunburst .
The Love of my Life is an American Bulldog Named Duke . I'm currently running Cakewalk By BandLab as my DAW .
