SONG RECORDED ONLY WITH A SM57
Hey Gang, I decide to try to record a song(well 95%) using only a SHURE SM57 a $99.99 mic. The song I recorded is a ELI YOUNG BAND cover. The only instruments not recorded with this mic are the drums(EZD) and the bass(cakewalk). Things recorded are acoustic guitars, shaker, lead vox, and BGV's. Please give this song a listen and feel free to make comments or suggestions. The song is called .... WHEN IT RAINS.... on my soundclick page THANKS AGAIN Kev

Really crisp sound, nice wide mix, I like your tones. Cool backing vocals on the chorus. The kick drum rhythm on the chorus feels a little odd to me, and I'd bring up the bass guitar part. Like the effect you created at around 2:50...cool, nice contrast. Nice inserted silence. Very nice recording, arrangement and mix. ORIGINAL: drumstixkev Hey Gang, THIS IS A TEST! I think maybe the rhythm guits are just a little too hot for everything else. It's a nice song :-) Sounds pretty good though :-) Ok, I'm selling my Neumann! I guess this is why they call it a "Super" cardioid?

Kev, vocals are really clear and crisp and I'm really impressed with the overall sound of the entire song. Now I'm depressed.............I'm not going to tell you how much money I've spent on mics!!!

SHURE SM57 -- (I'm assuming your sound-interface is upper quality to allow the SM57 its 'proven' potency in the signal chain) -- Song is astounding with sweet title-hook "When if Rains". I listened thrice. The song is a sweet 'soft-rain' of rhymes and double rhymes that makes for a steady rhythm of droplets ... to sooth a bummed-out soul. -- Backing vocals are perfect. -- Clarity is so excellent, as are guitar transients. -- 2:45 telephone to 3:00 ... pretty awesome! -- Guitar picking is astounding. I don't know how much more mastering you'll be doing: I'd experiment with some tape or tube saturation.

Nicely done, Kev! Obviously it's much more about talent than the gear used! What EZD set are you using for the drums?

Kev, Very nice mix. As other have mentioned, the vocals sit in this mix very well. If the acoustics are the core rhythm for the song, then the acoustic's volume is perfectly fine. Is there a bass guitar in the song? If not, why not? Excellent work. It shows that the SM57 is a well designed microphone and can provide good quality. What pre-amp or sound card (if not using a pre-amp) did you use with them? Thanks for sharing, Tom

love the 1:19 (220ish) Beatlish part....I'm at work so the mix is what it is on puter speakers....love the bvox...nice touch w/ the lead vox right before 3:00 Really liked the the "stop n pop" @ 335ish.....only thing I can think that would make this a stronger song would be to have an electic lead as opposed to a acoustic one....I think longer notes in the lead would lend a hand (in a good way) to this really good tune.... keep it up me brudda!!

I really like this, very nice mix, good vocal layering, calls to mind Elvis Costello or The replacements. I too would like to hear an electric solo. The 57 is a classic, I use a 58 (same guts as 57) on some vox and many amps still, plus live it takes a beating. Cool post man. Chaz

Great chorus! Love the bgv's. No doubt the 57 is a force to be reckoned with. I thought it worked particularly well on the acoustics. This mix sounds pretty high endy on my system. I can't hear the bass at all. Love the song though.

Kev There's a real cool warmth to your productions that is just so likeable, this one is right up there on the likeability scale. One could say....perhaps this....or perhaps that...but in the end it comes down to the one simple fact... ...I like it!

Ooo! Sweet acoustic riffs/playing! Layered? Nice spread with it in the mix..nice and full. The little acoustic lead sounds like a mandolin. Nice touch. A catchy tune. I'm shaking my head in disbelief that this was done all on that Shure?? That's talent! Your vox is a perfect fit for this. Excellent and enjoyed not only the song, but the creativity and ears behind this. Nice one Kev! You're a force to be reckoned with.
