SONTRONICS STC-1 Pencil small condensor mic - awesome

Just thougt I would share this, after a lot of experimentation, and few mic's both trial'd and purchased.

I do a lot of acoustic guitar in my work. Both steel and nylon. Usually finger picked, but sometimes with a pick, particularly if adding percussive work. Also mandolin and banjo. I nearly always record both from the piezo pickups and with one direct mike, to give two signals for each take, to give me some choices at mix time. Normal stuff I'm sure.

But I've been researching heavily, watching heaps of vids, and trying to learn as much as I can. I love acoustic instruments and want to get the best from my gear, and my room, that I can.

For the mikes, I have an sm57b, sm58b, studio projects  B1 large condensor, Rode K2 large condensor valve, and couple of other older condensor's that I've had for years. The B1 is great, and the K2 pretty awesome, but mike placement is critical.

To cut a long story short, I bought a Sontronics STC-1 pencil small condensor, which came in a wooden box with two free end caps for Hypa Cardiod and Omni, (which retail for $50 each). The lot, brand new, $135 (AUD) which included delivery. So I wasn't expecting anything special.

Wrong.

I'm simply blown away by how good this mike is. The detail from the instrument is exceptional, and it doesn't matter TOO much about mike placement. Sure, you still have to get it right, but it's not that hard. Where you point it, is what you get. So much so, that I ordered another today, so I can do the classic '12th fret' and 'sound hole' coverage. The mike is just so good, that I know I will get two perfect, different sounds, ready for mixing. I'm no longer bothering with the direct piezo output from the guitars to add in. Not necessary. The miked sound from the guitar is 'spoilt' by adding anything else in.

Just wanted to share this, because if you can pick up the same deal, you simply cannot go wrong. And if you need a mike for cab miking, snare or other drums, overheads, acoustic piano, then I'm sure this will be just as good for those applications too.

Just a bargain. Hope someone finds this useful.

Cheers

Dave.
