https://www.soundonsound.com/news/sonar-now-free-renamed-cakewalk-bandlab BandLab Technologies have relaunched Sonar, with the entire Sonar Platinum feature set and made it completely free, under the new title of ‘Cakewalk by BandLab’.
This makes sense of comments by BandLab Technologies CEO Meng Ru Kuok who had previously stated that current Sonar users "will not need to spend any money to cross-over/cross-grade to the future flagship product."
Cakewalk by BandLab includes the core premium features found in the very capable Sonar Platinum (which used to cost £399), including the Skylight user interface, flexible ProChannel modules, ARA integration and an end-to-end 64-bit mix engine.
It’s worth noting that third-party products that used to be bundled with Sonar Platinum, such as Melodyne Essential, Addictive Drums and a few others are not currently included with Cakewalk by BandLab. However, users who previously bought these products as part of a Sonar Platinum bundle will continue to be able to use them in the new DAW, as will those who have independent licences. So it seems we can install this new FREE version of Platinum alongside our existing installed version and that new FREE version will inherit any previous plugins we had bought with Sonar Platinum Legacy. The COMMAND CENTRE is of no use any more because the legacy version of Sonar Platinum will no longer be updated. This detail is here: https://blog.bandlab.com/cakewalk-by-bandlab-press-release/

Blimey, that's a shock. My big questions: (1) Are there any features in BandLab Cakewalk that I don't already have in the last version of Sonar Platinum? It doesn't seem so otherwise it would have said so in the Press Release.* (2) Or, must I download and use this new version in order to have access to all the 'future developments'? (3) What's the mechanism by which all my purchased extra stuff will still work? *I assume one quickie new feature is a fast upload of work to my BandLab page. Edit: In my excitement I missed the mention of two quickies: "The ability to replace Track Templates and enjoy a theme-capable Piano Roll View (easier on the eyes for those late nights)"

I am sure some people here will manage to turn free into something bad. I can see it already, "hey we paid for it why should everyone else get it for free. Its not fair!" :) Should hopefully put some of the worries to rest for the "subscription" crowd. Smart move I'd say, free is always good and will most likely get lots of more people interested in the product outside of us exsting users. Sonar for free ... wow! Good luck BandLab!

Is it all part of trying to rapidly grow BandLab by supplying a proper DAW instead of the toy loop thingy they currently offer, and then when some kind of critical mass is reached monetise the BandLab site somehow, e.g. with banner ads? We'll see I guess.

Offline activation has been eliminated as well. I finally installed SONAR Platinum on my studio's primary and offline DAW this past Thursday as I figured that any day now the last chance to do so would occur. For a short while I was enthusiastic, but over the weekend it occurred to me that I will never migrate any of my SONAR 8.5 projects to Platinum as it is a sand trap of sorts. Anything I commit to Platinum is going to require an online DAW to rescue when my current primary DAW is replaced with a new offline system. I do like the fact that someone finally figured out that all the third party free stuff was nothing more than expensive government cheese, and I applaud the idea that the third party bundle agreements have been recognized as a waste of resources. It bares the truth that the development of the actual function of this particular DAW did not cost much more than the current pricing reflects. The costly bundling of BLOATY crippleware seemed like a poor substitute for the development of the DAW. I am glad to see a new development model emerge. It could even be called a rapid environment for audio production, engineering, and recording or something catchy like that. The best part about this announcement is that the new pricing structure dumps the value of DAW technology to historic new lows, so maybe now Presonus, Steinberg, et al will see a need to morph into shells of their former selves and become social media recruiting tools with amorphous goals and ambiguous profit structures. I am thankful I have yet to sell my acoustic guitar. I may have to use it as firewood someday. Soon.

BandLab Technologies today announced the relaunch of SONAR as Cakewalk by BandLab - available free-to-download to all BandLab users worldwide. Presumably I can sign up as "SPLAT the Cat" today and download Cakewalk by Bandlab for free just like the rest of the world. Yesterday it seemed important that everyone transfer their existing account info to Bandlab before Command Center shut down. Now it doesn't seem to matter.

mister happy Yesterday it seemed important that everyone transfer their existing account info to Bandlab before Command Center shut down. Now it doesn't seem to matter.
I belive this part of the update today explains the need for those acounts? "Many thanks to everyone who has already signed up for a BandLab account. As mentioned before, it will be necessary for tagging other purchases you have made in the past - for example, the next iteration of Rapture will not be released for free when it is ready unless you are an existing owner and eligible for a crossgrade. Having your obsolete Cakewalk ID linked to your BandLab Account ensures that we can verify your previous purchases, and any future upgrade or cross grade opportunities are available to you. For those who haven’t signed up yet, you’ll also need a BandLab account to install and authenticate Cakewalk, as well as to receive future updates and new releases.

The program itself is indeed free, no catches as hard as that might be to believe. You can thank Meng for his philanthropic philosophy of making great music production software available to all. You are however welcome to contribute and support the cause for future development of Cakewalk here and even get some free swag for it. https://www.bandlab.com/products/cakewalk/rewards

Sorry Noel, I'm not buying the philanthropic thing, and I can't believe you would make that statement. If he really wanted to help he'd just send an unlocker so all of us who have bought Platinum can install it forever without Meng's permission, or he could make it available for all to download without signing up for Bandlab and using its online activation nonsense. With these procedures, it's clearly not free, no matter what you call it. There will be some mechanism of monetization, as there always is, and to pretend otherwise is kinda rude. Ads? Probably... selling of information? Most likely... Holding the program I and many others depend on to make a living hostage? You bet ya.... Sorry, just trying to keep it real...

It's cool that Cakewalk is free, but didn't Meng tell us that it would be free to SONAR/Cakewalk customers and that's why we were required to sign up at BandLab so our accounts would migrate over and qualify us for Cakewalk for free. If it is free to everyone, then we really didn't have to transfer our accounts (with our email add's) to BandLab, just create new ones when/now that Cakewalk is available. It just seems a little disingenuous even though it was innocuous. Kind regards, tecknot

From Meng's announcement: "We have an aggressive vision here at BandLab – and that is a world in which there are no barriers, physical, geographical or technical to the making and sharing of music. For the millions of creators already on BandLab in more than 180 countries around the world – this vision continues to develop every time we push a new release." I can't tell you what to believe but BandLab has been doing this for 4 years and hasn't wavered from this theme. An general unlocker for platinum is not really up to BandLab to give away since there are 3rd party license agreements in the platinum bundle that BandLab is not liable for. BandLab acquired the IP for Cakewalk products not the other stuff that was redistributed by Cakewalk, Inc as part of the platinum bundle.

A computer independent unlocker for purchased Cakewalk, Inc stuff (only) would be the next best thing, IMO. Especially since, in my case, I own fully licensed versions of AD2, TH3, Rematrix, Melodyne, BlueTubes, BREVERB 2 et. al.

But I do see the complications that need to be worked out. ATM I have X1, X2, X3 and SONAR Platinum installed so that I can make use of older 3rd party stuff I may not have purchased.

Can we at least give it a fair shake before trashing? We have nothing to lose. many of us have some form of backup DAW or two anyway. I am excited that a DAW i have used for a long time is back from what seemed like the dead. i have no clue what their longterm gameplan is, but i am guessing that not having to pay for initial development affords them a little leeway in launch. This practically ensures loyal customers stick around and may turn a few new heads.
